I've had enough of the public. I fucking hate people. I'm tired of eating their bullshit with a smile. What types of jobs are out there that involve as little interaction with the public as possible? I'm about to start looking at the Arkansas workforce site and see what I can come up with.
Also, I've considered attempting to start my own business for a long time now, but have literally no resources to start with. I'd still be working with the public, but if I had my own "special interest" shop (comic shop, video game/movie shop, etc.), I'd be dealing with people who were more like me and even if I ran into some fucktard, I'd be the boss and wouldn't have to restrain myself from verbally thrashing them. Any advice on how to go from having nothing to running a business would be helpful.

You could work from home or find a back office job away from the front line.

The least public job I had was apartment housekeeping (although a lot of apt mgrs are related to satan). You might find some physical job like that. Maintenance guy?
It's great for the bod (and not so good at the same time) it pays nothing, but...much less people time.
So what about construction or something along that line? Just to get a break from it? Class A truck driver is peopleless work. (it could still be local).
Medical transcription is legit if you're good at it (and can teach yourself and get started in a hospital maybe?)
If you go the legit route it's a huge investment in money and school and they are outsourcing so...
Craigslist discussion forums used to have self employment forums.

I'm looking into some "work from home" things. The hard part is finding something that's legit and not a scam.
Realistically, I'm not capable of starting a business.
There are plenty of job openings at the prison that's 5 minutes from my house. I could easily go to work as a correctional officer if I wanted to. At first when I saw those openings I thought, I don't want to put my life on the line working in a prison. But then I thought about it and am I really any safer working here? I actually think I'm LESS safe.

Get a factory job, if you can find one these days. Only downside is crazy work hours. Only upside is getting paid for crazy work hours. and only really having to deal with maybe five people.

What he said. Warehousing/dock work is pretty decent money, and you do not have to deal with the public. (late as hell truckers and ignorant co-worker on the other hand...)

Stay where you are.
No, I mean it. You've got a great boss who allows you to tell the occasional customer to go take a flying leap without so much as a stern look. Granted, you end up taking extra shifts because you seem to scare off co-workers like nobody's business.
Your prime choices closest to you are Acme Brick (manual labor and you just don't work out) and more manual labor at one of the colleges. I dunno if you've noticed but the job market around here doesn't have a lot of room for people who hide at desks in corners right now. And I don't think you's like corrections much unless you were at the county jail.
Switch to overnights instead of evenings. You'll have less customers.

Actually, overnights would be worse because I'd have to do breakfast. All of the same assholes coming down all at the same time.
You're right though. As far as having a real job, there probably isn't one better than this. I just get so damn mad at the way some people seem to have no desire to be a decent human being and go out of their way to fuck with you because they know you can't fight back.

Want to learn to do something from home? How about braille transcription? Seriously. Keep the job you have now, you can take the course online for free at your own pace, and when you get certified, you have job security. Most of it now is done electronically on a contract basis for the printing companies. No scam to it. PM me if you want info.
Mystery shopping is a huge scam, btw.

They're all scams. The only way to work from home that most people can access is to start your own business or ask your employer to telecommute.
Or phone sex/psychic deals, but you're back to dealing with idiots.

I'm going to toss my .02 in and just say that you need to go to school.
Realistically, with a (no offense here) limited education you are going to find that getting something that really fits what YOU want is going to be extremely difficul or just flat out impossible.
My bf is an independent graphic designer (full time one for a specific company, tho) and he can pretty much score a job that allows you to telecommute for most companies he works for.

Yep. All scams.
You're burned out on retail. I did, too, after about eight years of B&N work.
I'll throw out some possibilities:
Work in the receiving department somewhere--warehouses, handle boxes, lug them around, enter them in, etc. Sure, you still have to deal with co-workers, but not the public.
Is there another job at the hotel which cuts down your interaction with the public? At other hotels?
The other point is that this is a job, not a career, and you probably need to decide what you want long-term and map out a plan to do that, however slow it may be. Having a goal sometimes make day to day job suckiness less sucky.

I'm of the rare breed who wouldn't care if I was holed up in a cell, as long as I have something to read, something to watch, something to eat/drink, the internet, able to work out (exercise), etc.....
I've thought about working for the city morgue, myself, but I was surprised by the low pay. I read about it online, though, so the information may have been incorrect........What I read made it seem like you can only make money in that field if you have some sort of biology degree.
A biology degree is one of the last things I'd want to go for.......4hr labs? Yeah, I'll stick that 4hr lab up the professor's arse.

In all seriousness, consider working toward the goal of moving. The education system in Arkansas is not getting the proper amount of funding right now, and it is only getting worse. (Blanche Lincoln backed Obama's "experimental" plan, which does not effectively deal with the critical issue of meeting federal guidelines for education standards statewide- let alone re-starting the gifted and talented program which was nixed five years ago with nary a headline.)
I think going to college, even if it means you would incur some serous debt, would be worth it. Get a degree if you haven't gotten one by now- it can only help your plight. While you are in college, network to find the right place to suit your needs. If your dream is to start a business, then look into small business loans- but do this after you figure out what it takes to make your business successful. Successful business owners all started somewhere- look at the Papa John's pizza guy's story. Good luck. My heart goes out to ya, man.

I can say from personal experience that the lack of regular direct human contact tends to mess with me. No exposure to human patterns unfortunately just seems to reinforce my own weirdness as time goes on, because there are so few people to check my own reality against; it's why I try to interact online as much as I can, I read news and science and entertainment articles as much as I can, to try to give it all a point.
It also unfortunately lets other people warp your reality and sets you up for abuse, that's why abusers try to isolate their victims or pick those who are.
I remember reading that social isolation takes a few years to really really change some brain patterns; somone correlated that with, for example, the cloistering period of religious schools and training and so on. I can believe it, personally.
Some folks would be genuinely happy without human interaction for a prolonged time, but IMO, they're rare and something might be up with them.
Anyway, not having some kind of social touchstone really fucks with me sometimes. Almost a decade of being a shut-in, I assure folks, has not been peaceful, it's been hell.

Correction: They *THINK* you can't fight back! As you've noted, yuor boss backed you up when when mister "Blue Charger" tried to fuck with you. (...And having a boss who has your back is not a thing to throw away lightly -- Accept the word of one who has had bosses that would throw employees under the bus at any opportunity!)
The fact is that -- as long as YOU follow the rules and THEY don't -- YOU are the one in control. YOU are the one who decides whether they can stay under your roof or whether they have to piss off down the road at 11:30 at night. Dude -- You're the He-Man of the Hospitality Industry ("By the Power of Hampton Inn...!" ...or, y'know, whatever...)
And the best thing...? You can do it all with a bland smile and piss them off EVEN MORE that way!
As others have already said, just consider this as a job while you're working towards a career elsewhere... and remember while you do it that you have the power to ruin their day/night/vacation/business trip/piece of nookie on the side for them but magnanimously choose to restrain the iron fist of your vengeance because, "with Great Power", etc., etc.
...Unless they're really TOTAL dicks; then the kid gloves come off and They. Are. Outtathere!

God, that's a heck of a punch, Hurricane.
The thing about opening a comic shop reminds me of Comic Book Guy on "The Simpsons" where he laments customers coming into his store.
Even though you may begin a business doing what you like, you can't always assume the other people who will patronize you business will be like you (or even likeable). My sister opened a spa/bath beauty store a decade ago. She said she likes pretty things, she likes luxury and relaxation and would like to be in that business. What she found was that even people looking for something soothing are also annoying.
People wanted robes that were softer or a different color. People balked at prices. People would ask for more quantities of things at lower prices. People would call her at home or at night to open up "just a second" so they can get something as a last minute gift. She learned that people write bad checks, can't be trusted with credit and will try to steal things. People also do not clean up after themselves.
She got out of the business and decided her next venture was to work for someone. And she went to work for a spa. As a receptionist. And loved it.
People who are "boss" sometimes deal with the public more than others and have to kiss more ass. Unless you sell drugs, you have to sell yourself and the product.
I hope something works out.

Nah, I was used to it as a child. My mom would hole me up in a room and not let me out, trying to force me to read books........I would read books anyway, but she thought I'd become some sort of savant if I was forced to read, in solace, 24/7.
It was probably an easy way for her to not take care of me, too. ........Obviously, it wasn't like this every minute of my life, but it happened enough so that it was something I got used to.
