WOW! that movie was utterly repellant. it's actually the first time I've ever walked out on a movie.
I hated the flash-back with baby Nirvash-- I didn't like how clingy and capricious Eureka was. I really hated how Holland and the Gekko crew were turned into the victims of sexual abuse and were "really 17 years old" and had to take drugs to keep from aging and dying at an accelerated rate. I hated how Dominic replaced Renton's father and was called "professor".
basically this is an "alternate universe" based on the same character designs-- and I just COULD NOT get into this movie. as soon as Eureka called Renton "idiot" for the 20th time and said, "I'm a robot spy for the EIZO" I said to myself, "okay, I've had it. I'm gonna get some sleep and get ready for a long day of work tomorrow."
the supporting cast was reduced to a series of two-dimensional cut-outs. that's part of what made the original TV series so enjoyable-- is that the supporting characters were fleshed out in interesting ways.
what else? oh yeah, they got rid of one of the most enjoyable and exciting villians of the series! they appear to have turned Anemone into a good guy! why on earth did they do that? she was arguably the most entertaining villian in the whole series!
I just couldn't come to grips with the 'alternate universe'... and the film didn't make any sense. heck, even if this had been a stand-alone film I would have walked out either way.
this movie frustrated the hell out of me. at the very least it looked okay--but there was still an impressive amount of recycled footage and short-cuts used throughout the film. the most notable is that their video-com-links show grainy still shots rather than fully animated artwork. compared to the TV series this was actually a profoundly noticeable corner being cut.
when Hap said that if Renton didn't join them he'd give the kid 'truth serum' and turn him into a zombie I was simply appalled. it got worse, when Holland had misgivings about hurting a little kid-- Hap said some sort of utterly ridiculous line like, "when you think about it we're really just kids-- so we can do whatever we want."
WTF?!?!
this movie sucked so bad I just couldn't stand it anymore.
I own every episode of the original series-- and I'd have been open for an alternate universe if it had made any sort of sense at all... but they crammed so much crap in there that I felt it was just a dismal failure from start to ... when I left 58 minutes into the film.
so, at least I didn't call it a failure from start-to-finish! :p
