Kind of sad at the same time but oh well.

Hooray! I totally love her work, and Power Girl is an absolute joy to read. It's my 2nd favorite book right now, right after Secret Six, and a big part of that is AC's art.

I love Amanda's work and it is great to see her on this list. But I am SHOCKED that Nicola Scott isn't there as well.

They haven't had Nicola Scott or Pia Guerra or Colleen Doran or Adriana Melo or JO FREAKING CHEN on their hot artist list? I mean, I know it's Wizard and all, but yeesh.
Amanda Conner's art is amazing, though! They ALL should be on any hot artist list.

I agree that there are a few excellent female artists but it is great that Amanda Conner has been recognised for her work as her cartoony characters look amazing.
Hopefully more female artists will get similar recognition in the near future.

Well they can only do 10.
EDIT - Also remember it's hot artists, not best artists.

Basically it's the opinion of a handful of juvenile males.
an ever decreasing handful of juvenile males, it would seem.
personally, if it took them this long to recognize the fairer sex was more than just boobs with a head on it, I'd actually decline the accolade, were I Ms. Conner.
I'm happy for her, don't get me wrong, but really, is this really something someone should be honored about? The FIRST female artist to crack the top ten....how long has this rag been around?

Since the ninties. And since then, how many female artists have been "hot"? How many female artists get big hype? Big sales?
I know it's in to bash Wizard and all, but it seems unfair to criticise them for not putting female artists, of which there aren't that many, on a list which is a top 10 of who is "hot".

Especially given the fact that unless you worked for the big two, Wizard doesn't care.
Hell, I've seen this asked before so I'll ask again
How many female artists HAVE worked at the big two and what exactly were their claims to fame at those two. (Drawing a Vertigo book wouldn't register on most fans list as being a HOT comicbook artist unless we're talking something like Sandman or even Fables)

Pia Guerra.
who pencilled almost the entire run of Y: The Last Man, which was a pretty fucking hot book, as I recall.

Acclaim and hot aren't the same. No woman has worked on a book like Astonishing X-Men or Batman and Robin. Y got a lot of critical praise but not sales outside of TPB.
Megan Fox-hot.
Amy Adams-acclaim.(and yes both women are attractive)

I wonder what took so long. Not just for any woman, but for Amanda Conner? She's had amazing work for years and they wait until now to acknowledge her, officially?
This is reminsicent of Susan Lucci, says I.

Exactly. Even my examples of Sandman and Fables in retrospect are suspect since Wizard doesn't really focus on Vertigo AND frankly most people aren't reading vertigo titles month to month.

To me it seems like the best way to take it is that Amanda Conner is so successful and popular that even Wizard have noticed.

I have no idea how to balance all the good female artists against the good male ones. That's too thorny and subjective and likely to lead to fist fights. And its not like the list in question is all that relevent to anyone ANYWHERE.
But Amanda Conner? Yeah. She deserves to be on ANY best list of any kind.
Just out of curiousity, is it out yet who else is on that list with her? I mean its easy to jump up and down and be upset that Jo Chen or Nicola Scott aren't on there, but there'd be a lot more ammo for that if the list is filled with sucky people or has beens otherwise. Also, if its MISSING someone like, lets say, J.H. Williams.

She's right up there with my favorite artists, and "Power Girl" is my favorite current non-Gail-written superhero book.

They STILL publish Wizard? I think even my lcs has stopped shelving it.

Both Power Girl and Wednesday Comics' Supergirl have been stunning.
Amanda is a bona fide star.

Firstly, why would Jo Chen be on the list? She's basically a cover artist. A great artist, but that's not enough to get you listed.
I don't have this list, but I got a free copy of Wizard at WWC and their 10 was...
1 - Ethan Van Sciver
2 - Frank Quitely
3 - Terry Dodson
4 - Ivan Reis
5 - Gary Frank
6 - Doug Mahnke
7 - Skottie Young
8 - Francis Manapul
9 - John Byrne
10 - Guillem March
First thing to point out is that it is based on what they're doing at the time (I assume), which is why there is a lack of the likes of Lee, Hitch, Maleev, Yu and whoever.
Secondly, with the exceptions of Skottie Young and John Byrne, these are people who are on big selling books. Power Girl is a "hot" book, so is Wednesday Comics, most of the other things she has done aren't.
Similar with Nicola Scott, fantastic artist and I'm genuinely a bit suprised she hasn't been picked up by one of the bigger books. But since she is on a book that is basically on the wrong end of the sales chart, why would she be a hot artist?
Being really good doesn't make you hot.

Is John Byrne doing any work in comic books currently?
Byrne is a hot artist? Today?? Really???

Yeah, that one is a bit of a head scratcher to me. Apparently he is doing a Star Trek book. News to me too

The book is for IDW, as they have the current Star Trek liscense. I do notice that YABS does not talk about IDW much, or when they do it is very Transformers/GI Joe with the occasional dash of Fallen Angel and Joss Whedon's Angel.

Its no big deal. Gail didn't see this topic, and its probably 5 seconds work to merge them if someone wants to.

IDW puts out some good stuff, but ultimately they don't have much market-share beyond those titles you mention.

Ah. Forgot to check the timestamp. Just saw that Gail started the other one. Tsk tsk. Some moderator.
Anyway, I don't need Wizard to tell me that Amanda Connor is an amazing top teir talent. Hell, this is the same magazine that not long ago tried branding itself as a mens entertaiment magazine instead of a comics magazine. I think they changed it to pop culture magazine now. I'm not surprised it took this long to list a female artist given their 'no wimmens allowed' clubhouse attitude.

Given the status of Wizard's opinion level amongst fans this is a minor honor, but an honor nonetheless. What I want to see is Amanda win an Eisner for her work as she deserves much better than Wizard. Everyone does really.

Nicola's a good artist but is she considered a 'hot' artist...not really. Her style is similar of good old school Marvel Bullpen/classically trained art that's solid but not stylistic enough to be her own. She's got a Bryne/Ordway/Jurgens quality to her that I really like (as I'm a big Ordway fan) but its somewhat of a simplistic, flat looking artwork that is just there. Its not flashy or give off something when I open an issue compared to someone like a Scottie Young or a Doug Mahnke. I know everyone here loves her for the work she's doing but until she gives her style a little bit of a change, she'll be a journeyman, er journeywoman artist that does astounding work and doesn't get the recognition she should get..like Jan Duursema.

And the fact that there aren't many female artists on major titles.
I mean seriously, an actor who does great work in a small movie doesn't jump onto the Hollywood hot list, so why do people talk as if it'd be different here?

Is an Eisner really that big a deal? I mean, I know Iron Man won Best NEW Series even though it's 40 years old.

Cheers again, Conn'.
Is this REALLY the first time a woman, And Amanda have made it onto the list though?
I thought, way back when, when she was doing the Black Bull, Gatecrasher book (black bull being owned by the Wizard owner, Gareb) she was also mentioned in some Wizard 'list' of sorts. And it would make sense as a cross publicity stint.
