Probably being incapacitated by the stench of zombie breath.
That is pretty freaking cool... I didn't think these covers could get any more disturbing after some of the BN: Titans ones... Seems I was wrong!

Is the guy holding Ray supposed to be Damage?
I noticed the little atom thing inside his Black Lantern insignia but the drawing of him looks a little on the vague side.

No, it's Al Pratt, the original Atom from Earth-2 and former member of the JSA and All-Star Squadron

I prefer the regular cover to be honest.
But that is okay.
That's three shades of wrong ,and four kinds of cool :)

Ah okay, thanks for clearing it up.
I don't follow anything JSA or All-Star Squadron related so I'm not very well versed on them aside from the times I've read about them in Virtue and Vice, 52, or a big mega crossover. Still, I think the cover could be a wee bit clearer in showing what Black Lantern character it's supposed to be but I suppose it also assumes people are readily familiar with the JSA characters or The Atom's history.
*Edit* And it helps if I had read the op's description. D'oh!

Okay.
James Robinson(Dialogue/scripting) and David Goyer(Plotter/ideas) Relaunched the franchise with Justice be done.
Based on his first work with DC on a title called stargirl (named after his sister who died in a new york plane crash) a young writer called Geoff johns was brought on to replace James robinson.
So Johns and goyer co wrote the title:
Their arcs include:
1) Justice be done (magic-Mordru)
2) Darkness Falls (Magic-Ian karkull-Obsidian-time travel-extant-Kobra)
3) The Return of Hawkman (magic-adventure-Onimar sinn-Black adam being badass-The King of tears-The spectre(Hal) and Johny sorrow and the injustice society)
4) Fair Play (Time travel-Batman team up-Roulette)
5) Stealing Thunder (Magic-Ultra-humanite-Best captain marvel moment in years by johns)
6) Savage times (Time travel and a cool powergirl solo issue)
7) Prince of Darkness (Biggest arc--Mordru-Obsidian-eclipso+Kobra--Christmas issues aswell)
8) Black Reign (This arc got media attention--Black adam takes over a country and the JSA have to stop him)
9) Lost (Time travel-Per degaton-Spirit king and a great hourman story)
10) Black Vengence (More black adam and spectre stuff)
11) Mixed signals (This is where it all went downhill--due to infinite crisis tie ins and omac project tie ins)
12) Ghost stories (Johns left and Levitz wrote this arc-It was merely okay.
Then they re-started the title again to give johns a new #1 issue. He left after #26 to concentrate on Blackest Night and Flash and GL

I'm wondering, did Goyer write the dialogue for Robinson? I know we love bashing CFJ, but I recently re-read two of the Starman omnibuses, and even back then it seemed like his dialogue got hokey at times.

Good question:
I always believed that movie guys like Goyer and Richard donner plotted ideas and let people more comfortable like johns and robinson to write the dialogue.
I could be wrong:frown:

Hmmmm....
I know that when he was called in to revamp Marvel's Generation X book (a series about a school for teenaged mutants), Warren Ellis had Brian Woods, a much youger writer who primarily did more hip, indie work, write all the dialogue and plotting for him.
So I'm not really sure what these partnerships are for. In Ellis' case, it seemed like he realized that despite being a great writer, he was out of the loop on teen lingo, but I'm not sure what the partnership on JSA was about.
Is there any interviews where Johns, Goyer, or Robninson specifically talk about what they did?

Not that I know of.
I guess I got my information from picking up bits and pieces over the years from Hardcore DC fans on newsarama (The Place of dreams) .
Not 100% Sure. But I think Goyer only co-plotted JSA while Johns done plotting as well and all of the dialogue. Also-Goyer left after a few arcs into johns run and then it was all John's baby.

Could the atom go into the subatomic universe if swallowed by the black lantern and if so would he be able to survive.

Well you're sorta right, Al was from E-2 till COIE then was merged with the E-1 heroes and given new histories where the JSA and JLA inhabit the same earth.
He died along with Dr. Mid-Nite and Hourman during Zero Hour fighting Extant.
It's never been clear besides Power-Girl (and Kal-el) if the rest of the JLA remember their E-2 experiences.

I believe that Psycho Pirate, Kal-L, and his Lois were the only Earth-2 survivors whose memories were intact. Power Girl regained hers in Infinite Crisis.

A little BN joke:
What is the Black Lantern's Health Care plan....
If you get sick, feel a strong emotion (Rage, Greed, Fear, Willpower, Hope, Compassion, Love) and then.... have your heart torn out and die. Then have a Black Ring resurrect your corpse for the corps use.

Another cool issue with some beautiful art ! The shit hits the fan as we see hero fights against legions of BLs all over the place !
JSA takes on BL JSAers and Freedom Fighters.
Barry starts spreading the world to the other teams.
BL power levels hit 100 % !
An unexpected death !
And two of the coolest and (to me) most chilling "rises" !
