I just watched 5 Centimeters Per Second and I was blown away by the beauty and detail of the animation. There is a sort of visual gratification in some feature length anime movies that simply isn't in series or even OVA from what I've seen. 5 Centimeters Per Second obviously showcases painstaking work, and now I crave more.

Other anime that I've seen that had stunning animation quality are Paprika, Ghost in the Shell 2, other Makoto Shinkai films, Miyazaki films (Ponyo is a great example), and of course, Akira.

I'm sure there is a boatload of what I'm looking for out there. Please share your thoughts. Thanks.

The Soul Eater anime struck me as having really good animation. It's not *as* good in all places, but sequences like the fight at the beginning are really great...if only I could find a clip of it.

I am familiar with Soul Eater, and the animation is fine for what it is, but I was thinking more along the lines of this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weSAge0XsOY&hd=1 *5cm trailer. make sure you watch it in HD.

Watching 5 Centimeters Per Second was a real visual delight...

That is unbelieveably gorgeous.

The backgrounds are amazing, like they've been hand painted. The blending of the colours is just stunning.

Excellent find there. I might even start watching this just for the ridiculous beauty of it.

Glad you see things the way I do. I will agree that it is the backgrounds that really does put this anime in a league of its own.

Got any suggestions for me? Or am I too jaded at this point? Haha. I really would like to see some more eye candy.

Thanks.

The girl who leapt through time (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Girl_Who_Leapt_Through_Time) is quite gorgeous as well.

Otomo´s Steamboy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steamboy)

From Otomo there´s this stunning short series (7 part, I think?) called Freedom Project (http://timmaughanbooks.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/freedom5dvd.jpg) that is just ridiculously pretty and detailed beyond reason.
Be warned, though, it´s heavily CG´ed.
Also be warned, there´s an insane amount of product placement, it seems the series was sponsored by.... a noodles brand. ^_^

Also from Otomo, , and I can´t recommend this one enough, the Memories (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memories_%28film%29) 3-parter.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, the 2nd one is gorgeous. The first... not so much!

A couple short stories from the Animatrix (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Animatrix) anthology will make your jaw drop as well.

5cm/s is truly beautiful, quite possibly the most visualy beautiful anime I´ve ever seen but the story left me almost Grave-of-the-fireflies-depressed.
Or angry.
Maybe both. ^_^

In a way, I came to see its beauty as detrimental to the evolution of the main character who apparently never managed to move forward and was left stuck in a pretty period of his childhood.

If you can find it, Genius Party and Genius Party Beyond are a collection of shorts showcasing some of the best that Studio 4°C can do.

Seconded on The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Steamboy, haven't seen the others you recommended but I'm sure they are good as well. Another I liked was Sword of the Stranger

Goddammit.

I absolutely hate depressing stories. And I can't watch it just because it's pretty. ><

It depends on your state of mind, as a cautionary tale, I think it works very well.
it wakes you up and makes you look around, see all the fun you could be missing while daydreaming of the pretty past.

If you're interested in some mecha stuff, there's Macross Plus and Gundam 0083.

Both are OAVs (Although both were made into compilation movies) but both are extremely well-done animation-wise for the genre. They mostly avoid the big-eye look and feature more realistic humans, as well as georgeusly drawn mecha.

Both are spin-offs of Japan's long-running mecha franchises . However, Macross Plus is easy to get into as it's a side-story which has little to do with Macross proper....while 0083 might require some Gundam knowledge....

Macross Plus basically is a reunion between three friends. Two have become rivals and are on opposite test-pilot teams for the next generation of Valkyries (Jets that transform into mecha) while one has become the literal brains behind a virtual pop singer. Like all Macrosses, music is part of the story, although the music by Yoko Kanno is deeper than the pop/rock soundtrack of the other Macross series. The series came out around 93-94 and has a compilation movie with some redone continuity and scenes.

Gundam 0083 is about three times the length of MP and deals with an inexperienced pilot who must recover another, stolen Gundam. Along the way, there's lots of mecha battles and shifting alliances.
The series is intended to be a bridge of sorts between the original Gundam and it's 1985 sequel, Zeta Gundam.

You have no idea just how little I need a wakeup like that at this point in my life. -_-

Oh well, does it have a happy ending? I can take a lot if there's just a happy ending to it all.

I'd just stay away from 5cm/second. If I was still hung up over my exes, this movie would've shattered me.

As a long time Patlabor fan, I should be slashed in the town square for having forgotten to mention the sheer beauty of Patlabor WXIII.
