That was the controversial character known as Cir-El. She debuted in the Superman 10 cent issue that kicked off Steven T. Seagel and Scott McDaniel's run on Superman. Cir-El was a clone of Superman made by Brainiac 12 and the Futuresmiths in order to lure Superman into a trap and kill him, while allowing Brainiac 12 to take over the world. When Clark first met her, she was given the public title of Supergirl and appeared in the Superman titles. She died in Superman #200 when she stopped Brainaic 12. She returned in Superman/Batman #23-25, I believe it was when she was recruited by Bizarro to be part of the Supergirl squad who had to rescue Superman from the Source Wall.

For what it's worth, this definitely is not the first time I've seen someone on a comic book forum come in, make it clear that he or she just read the first story arc from the "Superman/Batman" title, and then ask: "Who's that weird Supergirl in the black leotard? Why have I never seen or heard of her before?" or words to that general effect.

The last time I tallied it all up (a few years ago) there had been 17 "Supergirl" characters in DC's continuity at one point or another; several of them were later erased from continuity. (For instance, a lot of characters and parallel worlds got thrown out the window by "Crisis on Infinite Earths.")

From my point of view, the main problem is that with at least a few of the previous users of "Supergirl" (Matrix, the post-COIE version of Linda Danvers, and the "Many Happy Returns" version of Kara Zor-El, for instance) it still ain't as clear as it could be just what has happened to them and their continuity-status! Until I have some firm answers to those questions, there isn't much point in updating my old timeline of all the Supergirls and saying apologetically at the end: "I'm not sure how much has 'changed' in the 'official history of the modern DCU' regarding several of these characters." That would hardly clarify anything for my long-suffering readers who were hoping I'd help them "get it all straight in their heads". . .
