Hi there! I have a question re: the SH vs.Titania rivalry.

A few years ago, in a SH storyline featuring Titania and the power gem, the history of the character's rivalry with SH was seriously misrepresented. Specifically, the storyline claimed that SH's first encounter with Titania during the first Secret Wars mini-series had SH beating Titania badly. In the end, Titania had to be saved from SH by the Absorbing Man, the Wrecking Crew, and the other villains who were on the scene, who piled on and beat SH to within an inch of her life.

Now, anyone who has read the original SW series knows that this is not true at all. In fact - while it is impossible to say with certainty - it looked like SH was getting pretty severely beaten by Titania when the other villains got involved. At the very least, the battle was even, with Titania seeming to be more in control. Indeed, Titania's first defeat during that storyline was at the hands of Spiderman, who proved that speed, agility and fighting savvy more than compensated for raw strength. This was important because, years later, this defeat was the basis of Titania's fear of Spidey.

My question is simple: has this misrepresentation of events ever been explained or commented on? I am happy to live with retcons, but I find outright misrepresentations to be annoying and unacceptable.

Thanks,

Shaun

It wasn't a "misrepresentation", it was a retcon, showing what happened between pages when they cut away to another scene. If you go back and look at the original SECRET WARS scene again, you'll see that Titania tells the other villains to stay back--she wants to beat She-Hulk by herself. Then, when they come back to the scene, Titania is pounding away on She-Hulk with the help of the other villains. The added scene from SHE-HULK #9 shows what happened between those two pages, why Titania is now accepting the help from the others.

It definately does spin the scene in a different direction from what we originally saw in SECRET WARS, but it is simply adding to what is already there--it doesn't actually change anything. It is also used to help explain Titania's fixation on She-Hulk over the next several years, giving it more of a context and justification beyond just "you're another woman with strength".
