I remember hearing about this series but I don't remember it coming out. Did anyone get to check this out?

It hasn't come out, yet.

From Cup O' Joe (http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=21679):

Another check-in on a long-standing project: "About a year ago a Luke Cage mini by animator Genndy Tartakovsky was announced. Is this project still a go and/or simply delayed due to his storyboarding duties on 'Iron Man 2'?"

Joe Quesada: “CAGE!” is very much a go. Genndy Tartakovsky’s been a busy bee the past year – working on “Iron Man 2” and creating a new TV show, for starters – so his schedule is admittedly unpredictable. But he’s hugely excited about “CAGE!” and he’s writing and drawing away at a furious pace. Stay tuned for more news soon!

Are there any good Luke Cage Graphic Novels? I'm an Azzarello fan but I heard his Cage story sucked. Are there any alternatives?

Wow, this is the first I've actually heard of this. I'm not a fan of Cage's in the least, but I may just have to buy this for the art style alone.

I actually quite enjoyed it. But then I'm not an Azzarello fan. And I thought Corben's art was a while bunch of awesome.

70's Cage is dead. get over it!

Lets see if Gendy can do a modern Luke Cage story not that awful Blackploitation characterization.

if he can give me a story that isnt all pimps and hoes..maybe I will buy it.

Personally, I am not against 70's Cage. I am just afraid that there are some who prefer the jive-talkin, dumb as nails, Luke Cage to the respectable modern one.

I MUCH prefer Luke Cage of now, but I don't mind jive-talking Cage. This series may be a throw back to the 70's Cage and I have a ton of fun reading those issues. I just see it as a proper blaxploitation era and I've recently been more interested in movies of the time and I enjoy them too. I think there's room for this jive-talking Cage, but I wouldn't want it to be the main status quo of Cage in the now. If it stays in the past, I'm for it. Bring it on!

They showed preview art for it already and they're using the classic look.

I remember hearing about this like two years ago then nothing.....I hope they're taking their time and making sure it's good and can come out on a regular schedule.

Be prepared for Luke Cage to be Rick James'd up folks Butt! Just like Chapelle's version.

I got so sick of " Im rick James Bitch" being said by frat brothers to every black guy on campus it made my blood boil.

Mark my words, Jive-talkin Cage wont be celebrated--he will be elevated then used to batter Black kids across the country until it gets old.

Hahaha! Nice.

I was playing the new Marvel Alliance at my friend's place. One of cage's special moves is that he takes out his belt and whips you with it. I've had a ton of fun using that move and call it the Black Man's Whip. My friend cracked up hysterically when I yelled that out when I first used the move.

But the corny, '70s Blaxploitation thing is the only thing interesting about Luke Cage. Otherwise, he's just another strong-man (what can I say, never really understood the appeal of the character as he is now).

Well, maybe not that specific version of Batman, but the late '40s Dick Sprang-esque one on Batman: The Brave and the Bold seems to be pretty well received.

Reasons I love the recent Cage is pretty much the every man type aspect of him. Now I know Peter Parker fits that mode for most, but I feel like I understand Cage more. I've even spoken about this with some comic buddies and a few of us mostly like him due to the fact that he seems like a person who definitely hangs out in a crew with us. He's the laid back cool dude who doesn't need a costume. He's just an regular dude like you and I who likes to bust a few heads now and then.

yeah but it is a few degrees away from 6-'s TV Batman. If the new Cage series is like Brave and the Bold I wont have a problem.

And that mini series was complete and utter bull$#!%. It was actually offensive.

Never been a big fan of Cage in any version. I do see a bit more humor in the retro version, though.

Yes, I suppose Peter Parker is more the regular guy superhero for me when it comes to Marvel. Perhaps Richard Rider (Nova) or Greg Willis (Gravity), too. However, if we're able to extend this subject to the Distinguished Competition my all-time favorite "everyman" is . . . Barry Allen. No, seriously. Looking at his origin and heyday, he's just a regular, geeky guy who wants to help people and became a superhero because of a twist of fate. Good education, stable job, steady girlfriend, etc. In some ways, he's so normal it hurts (especially compared to other DC heroes from his early days). Oh, and he's a comic book fan too.

Heh heh, I feel you. But yeah, for me it's Cage, mostly due to I suppose his personality and mind set, speech, etc. He generally is like a person I hang out with. The way he's portrayed in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2... yep, definitely.

There might be something of a cultural divide here. Seeing as I'm a geeky, suburban White guy, I'm probably more drawn to characters who are geeky, suburban White guys.

Yeah 70s cage is dead but he will always be a guy from the african american new york neihborhood sticking up for the little guy and a dislike for to intrusive authority. Im glad they have kept his basic speech style and attitude (given a modern take) in the 2000.

That's it! I've been rackin' my brain trying to figure out what would give modern Cage that "iconic" Marvel look. Shades...no. Buckle...no. A yellow leather jacket...yes! That would certainly stand out and is distinct. How many folks wear yellow leather...anythings? Only a man who is indestructable would have the balls to wear something like that. I'd love it if they went that route.

I'm also looking forward to this new series.

Robin and Sentry both wear big yellow capes(I don't know if they're leather).

No to 70s Luke Cage. They can pay some homage to it but please, no tiara, no chain belt, no yellow, butterfly-collar, half-opened shirt and no Wonder Woman bracelets. I'd like to see him in a better costume too. Maybe he should call T'Challa.

Strictly speaking, Cage never really wore a costume. The stuff he wore back in the 70s was only slightly more outre than stuff you could see people wearing on the streets at the time. That was really the whole point of the get-up. He was never supposed to be a traditional superhero.

I'd like that yellow leather jacket to go along with his street attire. Just something you could identify Cage by other than being the tall black guy. Comics are a visual medium. He needs an identifying attribute.

I think he has that already with just his regular street clothes in comparison to everyone with bright color tights. I really like Cage as a bit of the "every-man" hero, and his clothes I feel captures that very visually in my book.

I was able to look at some scans of Azzarello's Cage book. Corben's art is awesome. The dialogue seemed to have a Tarantino feel to it. Cage seemed to be a Mickey Spillane Mike Hammeresque portrayal of Cage as a true tough street guy. I guess i can see how this could be off putting to some but I think I'm going to take a chance on this series. I'm a fan of Azzarello's work for Marvel and DC and I found some issues of this series for cheap. This series looks interesting to me and the radical look of Tombstone is cool as he looks goofy and scary at the same time.

Exactly. in the context of the Avengers, his lack of a brightly colored costume makes him stand out even more.

I bought one issue of the mini in a sale bin and thought it was awful and a complete distortion of the character. It was one of those things where I couldn't tell if it was just bad, stupidly offensive, or a failed attempt at satire.

With this and Bendis reviving Alias I hope they try and do the Mom 'n Pop angle.

"Honey! Danny and I are going to go beat up some Hand guys this afternoon, be back around 9."

"Wait wait wait, I told you that I've got to drive out to BFE to find some wife who's boinking her aerobics instructor. Danny can just find someone else to beat up assassins with; you've got to watch the kid."

I'm a big fan of other Azzarello work but, yeah, this series was dack. It smacked of white guy writing forced black dialogue.
