I have a bizarre, almost completely unfounded LOVE of the Winter Guard. I tend to have a thing for foreign teams, maybe that's it. I never buy one shots, but I'm definitely getting this.

Man, Crimson Dynamo has the most inconsistent armor (and set of pilots) ever. Looks interesting, I'll probably check this out.

Same here. Alpha Flight, Winter Guard. I love them all. I think the reason for my love of Winter Guard is Ursa Major. A guy that turns into a bear. How cool is that?

The answer, sir, is very cool.
Loeb bringing these guys back was definately a cool idea.
We need more of these international teams out there. They're a lot of fun.

True.
Also, some of you may remember that Steve Ellis also drew the CRIMSON DYNAMO series for Marvel/Epic several years ago.

I will probably support this since I've always dug the Winter Guard and their appearances in Hulk.
But they've been around since Loeb brought them in so this isn't' exactly their first appearance either

I suppose you could, though I'm saving a lot of information for later when I can make some more definitive statements. But, The Winter Guard is something I have wanted to do for a long time. As I mentioned Steve Ellis used to draw the Crimson Dynamo - and he used to live in Russia. And, I've been a fan of these characters through their various incarnations for years - Supreme Soviets, Winter Guard, People's Protectorate, Soviet Super Soliders - etc. I have their one-shot, their appearances in Captain America, Rom, Hulk, Iron Man, and more. These are fun characters to write - and the Presence is in it too!

When are you planning to announce that this one shot is leading into Winter Guard getting their own ongoing series???

Mr. Gallaher,
Hopefully since the Presence is the original Darkstar's father, his reaction to someone impersonating/replacing his daughter will be part of the story.
Will Tania Belinsky be in this book?
She was a great character, and it is really sad that she ended up trapped with the psychotic Presence. Hopefully some great writter will find a way to redeem the character *nudge, nudge*

It is also great that the reprint of the story where the Hulk meets the Soviet Super Soldiers is being reprinted. Peter David did such a great job fleshing out Igor, a silver age throwaway character, into a deeply troubled soul. That last page of Igor pleading with the read is still very moving. It's sad that the sliding timescale has rendered him basically nonexistent.
Does anyone know whatever happened to Fantasia/Fantasma? There seemed to be a lot of unrevealed stories behind the character. For instance: in the PAD story, she is fighinting with Atalanta, one of the Pantheon, when she reveals her "true face." The reader doesn't see what Atalanta sees, and we are left with the mystery. Is she ancient, deformed, hideously ugly? The world may never know.

She is a really great character. Absolutely one of my favorites. But, the book already has a Red Guardian in it. (Two, if you count the re-print). And, I thought it would be waay to much with the other stuff we have in store --

I loved the People's Protectorate/winter guard , just wished they kept their look consistent.
Where's Perun , Fantasma & Vostok ? How is it that Perun have yet to met with Thor & Hercules ? He is the russian thunder god with a personality like hercules , should have met his norse and greek counterparts.

They also should have reprinted the first meeting between hulk & the soviet super soldiers - the presence was involved heavily in that storyline. We also saw that the presence have the ability to easily turn hulk back to banner and he did the same to Ursa major who was fighting hulk at the time. Both of them got turned back into their human alter egos by the presence.

Yeah , she seemed pretty mysterious , she's probably an ancient sorcercess who's old , i could be wrong but i think red guardian have seen her true face before as well but was unfazed during the crossing line storyline with the avengers.

I am a little confused why they have changed the identity of the modern Red Guardian so many times, especially considering how little characterization each version has recieved.
Very psyched abou this book. And 56 pages for 3.99 is a good package.
Off topic a bit, but I have always wanted a book that looked at Marvel history from the Russian point of view. Maybe a Marvel Knights book that allowed all of the great Cold War stories of the 60s to still be valid. We would see how the politiburo depicted the Avengers and Fantastic Four, or how the exploits of Spider-Man was covered in Pravda.
Also, we should see a handbook of Russian and Communist characters, but done as a collection of recently declassified KGB files. There could even be evaluations of some American heroes that the Black Widow sent to her superiors before she defected. I can see it now:
Iron Man: The indentured servant of Anthony Stark, exploiter of the people and chief American warmonger.
The X-Men: Guerrilla warriors against the oppression and disenfranchisement of the capitalist system.
Black Panther: Symbol of the African struggle against rapacious Western imperialism. (Hey the Commies weren't all wrong. )

I wonder what incarnation of Crimson Dynamo this is? Or if it's an entirely new person... which would be a shame. Maybe the Red Guardian is really Putin and those shots of him shirtless and kicking ass has really been the Russian government showing off the brand new Red Guardian?
The more I think about it, the more I'd love to see a story of a team from another nation (RIP Captain Britain and MI13), so I think I'll definitely be picking this up.

Red Guardian is one of my favorite characters in the Marvel Universe. I liked Josef Petrus. And several of the others. This book is not a regurgitation of flat, Russian stereotypes - but rather a look at the personalities behind the powers of this team. It's an acknowledgment of what has come before - with a keen eye towards the future.

I wish they didn't give Red Guardian a shield. Even though the character was clearly suppossed to be some sort of russian response to Captain America, giving him a shield made that a little too obvious. I wish they could have given him something else.

This looks cool. I've never thought of myself as a Winter Guard "fan"...but I've always enjoyed their appearances when they've guest starred in books I'm reading.
Ursa Major is always fun...especially for the reactions he gets when he "powers down" and the giant bear becomes a naked man (like She-Hulk's reaction in that Avengers vs X-Men miniseries).
I do hope we get to see--or at least find out what happened to--some of the missing members of the Winter Guard members like Fantasma, Surge and Vostok.

Aside from the fact that it sort of made the SSS look almost like peers to marvels big guns, it also created a cool scenario where there weren't really any villains and every side had a point.

But here's a questions for those of you here - what is your favorite Soviet Super Soldiers / Winter Guard / Supreme Soviets / People's Protectorate story - and why?
I'd vote for their appearance in ROM as well. The battle in the snow vs. the Dire Wraiths was cool, scary stuff!

And ROM and the Soviet Super Soldiers were doing tentacle rape covers years before tentacle rape covers were fashionable.

I think this version DOES have superhuman strength.
He seemed to be able to stand toe to toe with Doc Samson in Loebs Hulk book.
I meant Superman strength as in "don't need a shield". It would be a neat new character for the Russians to have. He's named Red Guardian and has that outfit but is actually a super-strong character. Maybe he could fly too. Heck that could be a new use for Perun. Shave him and get him in a goverment-created super-hero outfit.

If he can take shots from Samon, maybe he doens't need a shield.
Though Thor has a hammer which he uses defensively, even though he's pretty tough.
Maybe they should give him similar weapons to Vanguard, since he doesn't appear to be around, instead of a SHIELD.

That could work, only the USSR doesn't exist anymore. So having an hammer and slicer wouldn't be very appropriate.

You're probably right... they'd be a bit too 80's.

I can't say that I've ever read much in the way of Winter Guard stuff in the past aside from the Avengers appearance, and Darkstar in some X-Men stuff, but I'm really excited about this. I hope sales are good enough to warrant a series that lasts longer than some of the outer rim concept books of late (CB&MI13, AOA, IF)
Plus it's really neat that the writer is getting in the dirt so to speak to drum up some interest for the title.
Thanks, David. I don't have any questions per se, just put your all into this title! Thanks!

An argument has been made amongst anthropologists and historians that the reason the Hammer and Sickle proved so popular was that it was similar in design to the Russian Orthodox cross.
Though I still think they were fun weapons... thats why I liked Vanguard.
I agree that he needs something, at least. Maybe a replacement? There's no reason the hammer couldn't be kept. Cossack sabre or whip? Axe (very important symbol in Russian culture)?

However it is written, I am excited to be seeing this. I agree with many other, I really enjoy the Winter Guard and Alpha Flights. I enjoy reading stories about NON USA Super Heroes.
What I always loved about Winter Guard is that they weren't just a collection of super heroes. They were a group of superheroes working for the government. Acting as the government. For some of us, it's more than that. It's like there's someone there who appreciates these characters as much as we do. As much as I love the FF, Avengers and X-Men, I care just as much, if not more for some of the more obscure characters in the Marvel U. When writers bring them in, even for cameo's, and treat them with respect, well, it shows that there are writers out there who can tell a good story without having to resort to the big guns.

EXACTLY. If you can do a good story with, say, the Ringer, or Radioactive Man, then that's much more impressive than just another Iron Man story. It's like picking Rudy for your football team, or some weird metaphor like that.
But having a were-bear in your story helps .

As a writer, my job is to establish the status quo of this team, create compelling characters, and to tell a good story. All the nods, cameos, and what have you - that's all extra.
90% of the time, the obscure cameos are more interesting than the main characters.

Technically, Hulk is in the book. As I mention in the Marvel.Com interview, he plays a unifying role in the story, but not an active participant. Think of it as sort of a HULK UNIVERSE book.

But I dont have that extensive of a knowledge of the team. Is it the official team of Russia?
Because if so, why do countries such as it have such few heroes/teams. I mean, they're the largest country on earth, and they only have 4 people defending it, while the US has hundreds of thousands in a single city

Russia actually has quite a few heroes, especially if you count all of the characters who appeared as Communist villains in other Marvel books. It all depends on your point of view. Seriously though, if you hunt down the one-shot Soviet Super Soldiers you'll see that Russia has thirty or forty really cool superheroes. Also, while Russia is huge in area, it actually has less than half the population of the United States.

So, I read this last night. And, I'll be honest, I think it's pretty darn good. First off, a couple of things. This is only my second post on these message boards, so I'm not sure what the tone of the boards is, but I came here when I found out the author was answering questions about the book. Secondly, Ursa Major is my favorite superhero - without a doubt! I even have a tattoo of his handbook entry on my arm! So, that being said ... here's what I thought of the digital prologue. There are some SPOILERS in this post, but I'm going to try and keep them minimal. I hope that's okay with the board mods.
1. Overall, very very good. Reminded me of early Claremont or Byrne. The opening three pages in particular. I would rate it 4/5.
2. It was nice to see Igor Drenkov again. It totally makes sense how the HULK is connected to this. Though, his name is mispelled here, I'm sure they will fix it when it goes to print[?]
3. Somebody dies, though I'm not going to mention who - though apparently its on wikipedia.
4. I've already got a soft spot for Red Guardian, especially his line on Page 4.
5. I think the art sings! It's a little rougher that I like, but I think it works for the book a lot. It's got a dirty and unpolished feel.
6. I'm hoping if this makes it to 'series' that we'll see things like the Dire Wraiths, Omega Red, Kraven, Rhino, Black Widow, Devestator, and the Remont 4. [The Dire Wraiths would be awesome, because of that whole connection with ROM & Bill Mantlo!]
7. If I had one complaint, it would be that the story was too short. I wanted MORE pages.
8. To Mr. Gallaher, with Darkstar appearing in X-Force, will that affect your story at all? Also, it looks like this Red Guardian has super-powers [finally!] is that true? Will Ursa Major have more to do in the rest of the book?

I put this on my pull list.
I've always enjoyed the Russian super-heroes -- stemming from Darkstar's appearance in the Champions. That series really picked up after John Bryne was on the book, and Mantlo was building towards something interesting with Darkstar that was never resolved to my satisfaction. The revelation that she was just another mutant didn't seem to mesh with her comments in Champions.
I don't think she was ever portrayed at the same power levels she had in Champions. And Grant Morrison's handling of the character showed me that he either had no interest in the character -- or that he disliked her and just wrote her in to kill her off. The character deserved better IMHO.
While Vanguard never really seemed as good as he could have been, I have a fondness for him as well -- being that he was designed by Dave Cockrum.
And yeah, loved Tania Belinsky in the Defenders. I wish the Starlight transformation could have been undone, as she was more interesting beforehand.

Every time I hear something new about this one-shot, the more awesome it sounds. Can't wait until December.
I am a little wary of the idea that all of the Winter Guard are basically roles that get filled by differnt people. I like to think that there is only one Ursa Major, Vanguard, etc. On the other hand, it would explain some discrepancies. For instance, in a Marvel Comics Presents story, Scott Lobdell stated he was raised in the Ural Mountains by bears, which contradicts the history established by Bill Mantlo in Hulk. Perhaps they were two people.
If this IS picked up for a mini/ongoing, I hope we get to see some great Russian space stories. Maybe stories with former cosmonauts Vostok, Epsilon Red, and Katyusha (I refuse to believe she died). The sky is the limit.
Really looking forward to this. And thanks for taking so much time to answer our questions.

I agree, I'm just saying that there might be some precedent. Besides, they dug up a replacement Darkstar fairly quickly. Frankly, I had thought that it was established that due to the Soviet policy of mutant genocide that Russian mutants were scarce even before M-Day. Of course, non-mutant Darkforce wielders are fairly common.

If the Winter Guard are back, then someone at Marvel needs to do something with the Bogatyri (https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Bogatyri_%28comics%29). DC Comics has just as many unique Russian superheroes (https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/List_of_Russian_superheroes), but they always end up using the Rocket Reds (they have Soyuz, Red Trinity, Blue Trinity, People's Heroes, had their own Russian Checkmate, and the Red Shadows their Suicide Squad).

Hmmm...
The Bogatyri were cool characters, but they would need a new motivation (attempting to restore the Soviet sytem is rather dated.)
Some obscure Russian's I'd like to see return:
Dr. Mishkin, from Marvel Team-Up Annual 1. An expert in radiation and inventor of a radiation retarding spray.
Comrade Sporadnik, from Avengers #101. Celebrated chess champion. He could serve as a stand-in as a Gary Kasparov anti-government disadent, or as support staff for the Winter Guard as chief strategist. I'm not sure if he belongs to Marvel or Harlan Ellison.
Valentin Shatalov. I think he would do well in Putin's inner circle.

I think you can have one team of Soviet 'revolutionaries' - but more than that gets out of hand and redundant. Valentin Shatalov and the Remont 4 are the team I lean towards, mostly because that team had Crimson Dynamo, Titanium Man, and Unicorn. To me, they carry more weight than Doctor Volkh, Mikula, Svyatogor, or Zvezda Dennista.
When casting a threatening team of antagonists, I look for coolness of name, simplicity of costume design, backstory, power set, solid counterpoint to heroes -- and Bogatyri didn't work for me on that level or in terms of what the story merited.

I agree the story the Bogatyri appeared in was rather lackluster (Roy Thomas was not doing his best work on West Coast Avengers), I enjoyed the fact that Roy put some thought into the names/origins of the characters. Most are reminiscent of Russian mythology/literature/folklore that I was completely unaware of before reading it. Say what you want about Roy, he did his homework
(as does Mr. Gallaher, obviously:biggrin: )

I was not thinking of the Bogatyri as antagonists, I'm thinking of them as heroes. As reformed heroes being what they externally appeared to be when I first saw them, Russia's answer to the Fantastic Four.

If the Winter Guard are back, then someone at Marvel needs to do something with the Bogatyri (https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Bogatyri_%28comics%29). DC Comics has just as many unique Russian superheroes (https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/List_of_Russian_superheroes), but they always end up using the Rocket Reds (they have Soyuz, Red Trinity, Blue Trinity, People's Heroes, had their own Russian Checkmate, and the Red Shadows their Suicide Squad).
big fan of People Heroes' Pravda, Hammer and sikle here...

(Hey the Commies weren't all wrong. )
Hindsight lad
Only problem with this is, currently all of the modern era Marvel characters from the FF on start their careers well after the fall of the Berlin Wall, and most likely after the breakup of the USSR as well, so they've never fought Commies actually backed by a Politburo in power. Hard-liners wanting a return to Communism or even Stalinism, or Maoists, maybe, but not Soviets under orders from a Soviet government.

I can't be bothered writing a silly affectionate sort of Winter Guard thread today, so I'll just bump this thread instead. Look, everyone! The issue is almost here!

Two days in the states. Stupid Pilgrims.
I hope this Winter Guard week has gotten the word out about the book. Alas, all of the thread seem to have attracted the same six posters. I blame myself. Curse my fondness for the esoteric.:frown:
Seriously, someone comment on the Polar Eternals!!!!!

This may have been mentioned already, but I only just noticed that the Winter Guard one-shot comes out on the same day as the second issue of Great Ten.
Fans of international super-teams, like myself, are in for some good reading today.

Wonder if we'll learn more about this new Darkstar since the original was killed during Grant Morrison's X-Men run.
Well, we did... ...for a time, anyway.

I know David Gallagher probably wasn't "in the know" about Necrosha but it woulda been nice to have a lil tie in with darkstar, but otherwise was very worthwhile purchase when it comes to international teams..

Thanks for that. I wonder if sometime a connection will be made, like some secret Alpha Squad that the Canadians had.

Oh, it may sell out . . . but only because retailers order abysmally low quantities. I predict a pretty low ranking on the December sales chart for this one, regardless of the product's quality. It's just the nature of the beast.
I apologize for sounding like a downer -- I'm merely being a realist.
