View Full Version : Am I The Only Non-Fan Who Is Curious To See Mark Millar On Superman?

I'm not a big Mark Millar fan. He's not the worst writer I've ever read, he just comes off as a poor man's Garth Ennis to me(Ennis is already hit or miss with me). Having said that, I'm kinda curious to see what his take would be on a Superman book that wasn't an Elseworld's title or based on a cartoon. He obviously loves the Clark since even JoeyQ & his Marvel exclusive can't shut him up about his love for the character or his attempts to get a movie script considered.

He claims to love Superman and did do the Superman Adventures series which was fun, but I'll never forgive his crap characterization of Captain American in Civil War. Like Superman, Cap is a guy who always does the right thing and inspires others and if he couldn't get him right, he probably won't get Superman right either.

However, I love his Ultimates work. See how well he does a jerk Captain America? Don't want to see his jerk Superman.

You mean you don't think Captain America would kick a Shield agent out of a moving car into oncoming traffic or that he'd try to electrocute Tony Stark through his armor?

If Millar was the only one at fault for Civil War and my problems with today's nihilistic Marvel Universe, I'd be all over him. While Millar has claimed to have grown up reading 2000AD and DC reprints(he obviously didn't do much research for his 616 work, but his editors really didn't do anything to help), Loeb(made Wolverine, Sabretooth, Wild Child, Feral, Thorn and Wolfsbane all a part of some lupine group:rolleyes:)& Bendis(annihilated my favorite Marvel team, Alpha Flight, off panel for shock value; writes most characters as if they're Chandler Bing; turned Hawkeye from a hero who broke up with his wife when she let a villain die into a "ninja" who kills at the drop of a hat) who have claimed to be Marvel fans, have written even more infuriating things for Marvel.

However, I love his Ultimates work. See how well he does a jerk Captain America? Don't want to see his jerk Superman.

Reptisaurus! posted this interview in another thread and it made it seem like Millar has more respect for Superman than he does other characters he's written. Although Mark Waid has claimed the same thing and I hated Birthright and his Superman reboot proposal from a few years ago.

I do enjoy Mark Millar's work, and it would be interesting to see his take.

Waid has a lot of respect for Superman. Kingdom Come, for all it's faults, is a great Superman story. Birthright I'm iffy on, but I read that a lot of editorial meddling soured his time on that series.
Millar gets Superman, as well. As someone mentioned, his Superman Adventures run was fun, but Red Son was also great.

Nah - That's Daniel Way.

I'm a big fan of Mark Millar's. He's fairly shallow, but guaranteed to entertain.

IMO DC are big time idiots for not sticking Millar on one of the main Superman titles years ago.

I liked Kingdom Come the first time I read it, but began to really dislike it the second time. It didn't feel natural to me. I felt a lot of the characters acted in ways they normally wouldn't just to get them to a place in the story that Waid wanted to get to. I didn't like Birthright for a number of reasons but I really didn't like the whole Clark can see people's "lifeforces" and that he did the Bruce Wayne journey around the world before going to plant roots in the big city.

I never read any of Millar's Superman Adventures. I might have to read Red Son a second time. I liked it when I read it, but I thought it was overrated.

Given Millar's somewhat limited talent, but infectous enthusiasm, I'd like to see him do some more work on Superman before he becomes a parody of himself like poor James Robinson appears to be.

Millar's ego, unfortunately, has grown far quicker than his writing ability.

Hated his characterization of Captain America in Civil War, and have no faith he'd get Superman right.

Well it would be interesting if he writes Superman as a vegetarian super-terrorist as he originally wanted.

I don't think I'd want him to do it now, because I'm digging what's going on at the moment, but if they restarted All-Star Superman, gave it to Millar and told him to have fun, I'd probably check it out.

I did like Red Son a lot. If he writes American Superman with the amount of heart he wrote Soviet Superman with, then I'd definitely like to see it.
