From Paul O'Brien's Marvel sales report at The Beat (http://pwbeat.publishersweekly.com/blog/2009/09/15/marvel-month-to-month-sales-july/) (where he talks about CAPTAIN AMERICA REBORN #1 and BN being #1 and 2 in the sales charts):
Intriguingly, though, Diamond’s chart lists BLACKEST NIGHT at number 1 in the dollar rankings - despite both books costing the same. I can only assume that this is because the extra sales generated by incentive variants (order ten, get one free) count for the unit sales, but not the dollar chart. Anyhow, it suggests that the two projects were closer together than the sales figures might first suggest.

Are there specific numbers on those "incentive variants" available anywhere?
If they are in the article and I missed it, let me know...

I was surprised how high Reborn ranked. I mean it's not a crossover EVENT! like BN is.Seems like there are people that still like good, old fashioned storytelling...
Weird.

From what I've heard, the first issue of Reborn was rather meh.

Some people felt that way, but personally I liked it well enough, it was mostly set-up, but it was a very interesting set-up. I was surprised in one way, but Bru's Cap has been a big seller since after Civil War, and Marvel hyped it to the ends of the Earth so I wasn't that surprised, but I wasn't so surprised to see that BN #2 beat it out the next month
Looking at iv2's full Top 300 list (http://www.icv2.com/articles/news/15820.html), it seems that all 6 Blackest Night related titles that were released in July had good reprint numbers in August (that's two issues of Green Lantern, 3 issues of the Tales of the Corps mini, and Blackest Night 1.)
Captain America Reborn's reprint numbers, if they exist, don't hit the top 300.

Marvel told retailers to order lots of it because it would be getting huge media coverage AND CHANGE THE WORLD FOREVER!
Neither happened, but it helped push the book to #1 for a month.

A bit (well, actually a lot) of both - good story (as all of Bru's CAP has been) plus huge media play in that time between CAP #600 and REBORN #1.

Well, it is true that it's not really a crossover, at least not in the sense of today, but Marvel has been hyping it as an event. I think about the sole reason they interrupted CA's main series to do Reborn was to have an 'event' to counter DC

Guess you are the only in the world who missed the media circus that sprang up after Marvel killed Cap.
The orders are only a relection of that.
