View Full Version : The 600 List!

Okay, so I'm sure you all know by now that Wonder Woman #45 will be the 600th issue of her series. Carol Strickland suggested a postcard campaign to convince DC to honor the Amazing Amazon's Anniversary, and Dan DiDio (http://www.dccomics.com/dcu/news/?cat=5877) said "okay, that's cool", BUT, there is a catch: we need to mail in 600 postcards, address:

Dan Didio
DC Comics
1700 Broadway
New York, NY 10019

(please correct me if I'm wrong!)
saying "WW #600" and if you want, a small message at the bottom.

So, let's keep tally of how many people have mailed in postcards! Post here if you have, and be sure to mention if one of you convinced one of your friends/relatives/dentists/strangers to mail in a postcard.

Diana is epic, there's no doubt about that. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the three of them are epic, they're long-running, they're icons. She deserves to have a book with an epic number as well.

Is this for real? Are they really going to decide to renumber the book based on 600 postcards asking them to? That's really stupid. Whatever, if it's for real I probably will, too

I think we could catagorize this as "for real"...I think it will happen now (though the plan was for this NOT to happen originally) either way, but this makes for a lot of free publicity (if you wanna call it that)

It would probably be less confusing to the mailroom to have the address as

Dan Didio
DC Comics

New York, NY 10019

The "7th Floor" thing doesn't matter much; DC is spread across several floors. The name of the company would be important, though.

Yeah, it's kinda sad that DC would need a 'push' in honoring one of their own, ICONIC, characters! I mean, this should just be a given, right?

Because they should AVOID the opportunity for free promotion for the book?

If they just went ahead and did it, they get one press release out of it. This way, they get two or three, pointing out that WW's a classic character, that she's reaching a milestone and that she's got a passionate fan base.

These are not bad things to turn into free promo.

This just seems like a way for Dan to not look like he backed down on his comments bout re-numbering issues, now that he has seen the popularity of Marvels re-numbering. I mean it's cool and all, but obviously he wants to do it, so why not just go out and say it, instead of saying that it is up to the fans. What does Gail think about this?

This is actually a pretty clever marketing tool. The tally keeps the WW title on the Dcublog every Wednesday so even people who don't follow the title will know the 600 issue is coming.

Is everyone here in favor of renumbering Wonder Woman starting with 600? Personally, I think it's silly. Sure, she's been published a lot but also canceled a lot. I don't really see how her latest title deserves renumbering to include every WW title ever. It's like DC is lumping her in with the long-running Superman, Detective and Batman titles, even though those have been more consistently successful.

She hasn't really been cancelled at all.

Wonder Woman volume 1 was suspended until the Post Crisis reboot. DC decided to reboot v2 into v3 in an effort to get new readers. There was never a cancellation at all.

Wonder Woman has never been canceled. She was rebooted (as was basically everyone) after the Criss. And Volume 2 ended and immediately restarted in an effort to revitalize the character.

I apologize for my ignorance. If her title's never been canceled or suffered gaps in publication, then, yes, she shoudl get the larger number. Marvel did that for Fantastic Four a few years ago, and some other titles, too. My only real concern with that kind of overhaul now is -- historically -- it will be confusing.

Invisiboy - 60,000? No offense, but are you nuts?  That's almost twice as many people currently buying the comic. Even Superman hasn't been selling over 60,000 (per comic) in awhile - few monthly comics do. Maybe when she gets to issue #60,000, then we can talk about 60,000 postcards.

I do not know, good question though! The reason I personally want Wonder Woman to go back to numbering with #600 is that I HATE the broken time line with a passhion! I want it to be DIANA as Wonder Woman # 1 - #600 and no more of this "Hippolyta was the Golden Age Wonder Woman" I hate that! I have a reprint of Wonder Woman #1 and her name in it is DIANA! To me there is only 1 Wonder Woman and she is Diana. if the numbering is restored it will be Diana from the Golden Age to the present! To me the Hippolyta as Wonder Woman thing never happend, I say it was all a BAD dream Diana had.

I read this in back of Red Robin four I believe. Just checked this website to see if you all were pushing it. I read what he wrote and it did make sense why they went to a small number, as I'm one of those people who would buy a low number comic more often than a high one. I think they should do what Adventure Comics, I believe it is them, are doing. Have the low number and behind it have the real number. How long has this drive been going and when does it end?

knowwonder
10-07-2009, 07:42 AM
Well, with the current run, #45 would be issue #600 and come out sometime next year--about 10 months from now--if all calculations are correct.

It's worth noting that no one is asking for special treatment for this title--just equal. I'm certain the title will not retain this numbering, and I don't believe anyone does. We simply want it acknowledged on this one single issue. Why people such as 'fukbot' (Keeeeeeeelassy, that one) on the blog and others feel the need to be disparraging or launch an 'anti-renumbering campaign' is truly bizarre.

Well I decided that its time for some out of the box thinking.

So here is the email I just sent to Oprah Winfrey on her website, Oprah.com

Dear Oprah,

In Australia there is little girl called Gwendoline She is just over 18 months old. Gwen has a hero. Her Daddy calls her Wonder Woman, but Gwendoline calls her Waa Waa. This is the story of how Waa Waa came to be so important to Gwen and her Daddy.

Just after her 1st birthday Gwen got very sick. Her Daddy took her to the hospital. Gwen had a bad virus. She could not breathe properly or eat. She had have tubes in her arm and nose. She was very sad. So were her Mummy and Daddy and her brother. All their friends and family were praying for Gwen.

Gwens Daddy is a big nerd. He reads comic books. One of the people who writes comic books is Gail Simone. Gail writes Waa Waas comic book.

When Gail found out Gwen was sick, she put a message on the site where Waa Waas fans come to talk. It told about Gwen and asked them to pray for her. LOTS of people said they would pray with Gwens family and friends. There were people all over the world praying for Gwen.

After a week Gwen got better. Her family were very grateful to everyone who prayed, including Gail and the Waa Waa fans.

Waa Waa has had a comic for a long time. Next year will be her 600th issue. Other heroes have had lots of comics published. People get excited about it. BUT Waa Waa has had the numbers of her book changed a couple of times.
.
The people who make Wonder Woman comics (not Gail) had said they wont change the numbers to 600, even though that has been done for other heroes. Waa Waas fans like Gwen and her Daddy think she should get her 600. The people who make the comics said they will do that if they get 600 postcards asking for it.

On the October 25th it is Wonder Woman Day in Portland, U.S.A. It raises money to help women who get hurt when people are mean to them. Waa Waa is a pretty special hero.

Oprah, Gwen and her Daddy know that you talk to other women like you who people know for doing nice things, and being good at what they do, just like Waa Waa. If you and they sent postcards to ask for her to get her 600, the people in charge might listen. The postcards are supposed to say...

Wonder Woman issue #45 should start renumbering at #600!

Happy Monday, Source gang. It’s been a while since we updated you on the Wonder Woman #600 postcard tally, mostly because we’ve been inundated by the response from fans. And while we’re holding off on giving you the final number, I do want to let you know that we’re ending the call for postcards. So, if you got to send one, great. If not, the gig is up.

And I know what the next question is — “Did we make it?” Well, we’re not telling yet. And I know what the question after that will be — “If we did make it, will the numbering go back to #600?” We’re not telling there, either. But rest assured we’ll have some interesting news for you in the coming weeks. Many thanks to all that participated, and stay tuned.

That is sooooo wrong not to tell us. Seriously!

Well, they are basically telling us they reached 600. They wouldn't announce that they will make a big announcement that the contest failed... especially after saying "we’ve been inundated by the response from fans"

What annoys me is this: "And I know what the question after that will be — “If we did make it, will the numbering go back to #600?” We’re not telling there, either"

If they have 600 and don't renumber I will be pissed.

... as soon as Dan mentioned the postcard contest, it was already set in stone: WW is getting the #600 renumbering.

Why, you ask?

Because WW is a marquee superhero at DC, one of the trinity and the name of the game for a while now has been to reinforce her place in the DCU and as a member of the trinity.

My point... if the deadline passed and Dan goes and tells the truth, "Sorry guys, we only got 297 postcards," then it makes WW and its following look a bit bad, and leaves him with a bit of egg on his face.

The only variable, I think, is whether the #600 is a one-off thing, just for the one issue, or if it's a whole shift (to be continued in #601, #602, etc.).

What a slap in the face it would be if #600 was just for one issue.

The point is to reinstate her status by getting her title up to the numbers shared by Superman and Batman. It's as simple as that.

Exactly, if Wonder Woman #45 becomes Wonder Woman #600, then the issue that follows it should be Wonder Woman #601, not Wonder Woman #46.

And hopefully, this will give Wonder Woman a great sales boost because more people should be reading this awesome book.

FYI, dan didio said that he'll announce the final tally of the 600 postcards on 2nd week of december.

Oh.

See, as far as that goes, I don't even care. I've just been hoping for the recognition of this singular milestone, and don't really mind if the numbering reverts back. I fully expect issue #45 to be marked with both numbers, resuming at #46 of Volume III with the next issue.

How do others feel? (Did I miss the whole point??)

I'm in total agreement with this.

Let everybody have #600, hell, make it triple-sized with 12 variant covers, but DC would be crazy to not take advantage of the upcoming 50th issue of volume III to change the numbering after #600.

Two high-profile "anniversary" issues are much better than just one.

Hm, I may agree with you a little knowwonder but at the same token I can see why some would want to keep her with the 600# and keep going up. She is the ONLY female Superhero that has her comics going on that long why not give her at least that?

How many comics that have the 600 plus numbers on them? Just wondering

Yeah, but it's not like Captain America where you can get away with it with Captain America #50 followed by Captain America #600 the next issue.

And Wonder Woman just isn't a high enough profile character these days to do it to either.

She's high profile enough that DiDio took notice of the postcard campaign to drum up interest for the title and offer a 600th issue.

Many people felt that Captain America didn't need it either, but it didn't stop Marvel from taking advantage of two "anniversary" issues. DC would be foolish not to take this opportunity to do the same.

In the end it's really about the money, not pleasing fans. Didio is using the postcard campaign as a marketing tool, and "respect" for Wonder Woman has nothing to do with it. Nothing wrong with that. It's just business.

But if you number a comic 600, you can't just go back to retitled numbering just so you can have issue 50. The only reason why Captain America got away with it was because following issue 50 was issue 600. That's not the case with Wonder Woman.

Frankly the only character I would see getting away with a stunt like that would be Deadpool.

Marvel had She-Hulk #100 right around issue 12 of her last series, and went right back to the regular numbering the next month. DC could do the same, just superimpose #600 across the top of the book, or they could do it the way they did with Adventure Comics: offer a variant number edition. It can be done and that's just a couple of ways just off the top of my head.

You're right about Deadpool, and I would go as far as to say that Wolverine is still hot enough to do something similair.

For the record, I'm normally against gimmicks like this... and beyond that, numbering confusion type fare... but I think it would be pretty cool, in this case.

The whole campaign was to start RE-NUMBERING AT 600...not get a #600 issue.

Yup, that's what I understood, too. Renumbering starting at 600.

If I recall correctly, DiDio said they would announce something the 2nd week of Dec. I'm guessing along with the Mar. solicitations.

It's like an early Chirstmas present - looking forward to it.

edit: Lynda has speedier typing fingers than I. Must remember to train more. :frown:

Hi Scotty,

Honestly speaking I didn't had any ideas about wonder woman. I spoke to some of my friends and they were knowing about it.

One of my friend is going to send a post card at the address given by you. We are from Central London. So only one guy has got convince to send a postcard. If more gets convince, I will post the information here.

Cheers.

Guys, since this has been announced, I am going to unstick this thread. It'll still be around, but it doesn't need to be "stuck" to the top of the page anymore :-)
