Hi everyone. This is my first post.

I'm a fairly recent DC fan and have been brushing up on my Superman, Batman, and company. I'm at a point where I want to get started on Green Lantern, but I need some advice on how far back I should go.

I'm not interested in anything pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths. Also, I'm not a hardcore collector, so I basically only buy trade paperbacks.

From my research, I've identified four post-Crisis eras of interest:

I. Gerard Jones era, collected in:

Emerald Dawn
Emerald Dawn II
The Road Back
Emerald Twilight (written by Ron Marz, but seems to conclude above story arcs)

II. Ron Marz era, collected in:

A New Dawn
Baptism of Fire
Emerald Allies
Emerald Knights

III. Judd Winick era, collected in:

New Journey, Old Path
The Power of Ion
Brother's Keeper
Passing the Torch

IV. And finally the current (mostly Geoff Johns) era, starting with Rebirth and including the Green Lantern Corps series.

To some extent, I am tempted to just start with Rebirth and skip everything that came before. Do you think the earlier titles are worth reading? Is there any era that you advise just skipping over? If not, would you maybe advise just sampling a book or two from the previous eras mentioned above? If so, which are the essential ones I shoudln't miss out on?

All comments, advice and opinions welcome and appreciated. Thanks.

I haven't read Winick's Green Lantern, but I should point out that I'm yet to enjoy a single story he's written, it might be worth avoiding that. Really, I didn't particularly enjoy the Jones stuff either. Emeral Dawn II in particular I thought was bad.

Hal Jordan's story was always hinted at from an early stage in my view, This can seen the Flash: The Secret of Barry Allen and The FLash: Ignition, you can also check out Hal as the SPectre in The magic themed event by Geoff Johns called:Day of Judgment. Hal guest stars as the Spectre in The JSA arc's The Return of Hawkman and the LOST TBP. You will find cool hints in these above stories that can be viewed as hints and sub plots suggesting they were bring Hal back from the dead and back to be being the Green Lantern.

I actually like Winick (one of three people) and I like Kyle Rayner, so I'd suggest you go with that.

Johns' era is pretty good (minus the man-crush on Hal Jordan.)

This is what I am doing atm, and it's working out quite well for me. And don't listen to RyeRye. They're just mad Kyle isn't the the GL star or openly gay. What? You know I'm right:biggrin:.

The Gerard Jones era isn't that good although there were some stories I enjoyed. I'd suggest you to skip the whole Kyle era and directly go to rebirth.

You certainly could jump right in with Rebirth and go from there, the rest before isn't really essential to read, and I can't think of that many stand-out stories, quality wise.

Thanks for all the opinions.

I think I'm going to start at Rebirth. At some point, I'll probably go back and fill in some of the gaps, but for now I'm really looking forward to catching up on some of the recent stories.

I'd start with Rebirth and go from there you can go back if you want to find out more about the character, but considering everything that's going on jumping right into GL Volume 4 would be my pick.

Why aren't you interested in anything from before Crisis? The best runs on Green Lantern are those of Broome and Kane, O'Neil and Adams, and Englehart and Staton. I wouldn't touch most of the post-Crisis stuff with a ten-foot pole.

I'm not trying to downplay the importance or quality of pre-crisis DC comics. It's just not what I'm personally interested in. It's not a value judgment at all.
