Hey Gail,
I like the character of Fury (Helena), her ties to mythology and the idea that she lived on the island as an adopted amazon of sorts. Just wondering if you have any plans to use her. Given her history with Hippolyta and her delicate psychological state at times, I would be interested to find out how she feels about The Circle and their oath to protect their queen no matter what. Is she jealous? Does she want to join up? Addled minds want to know.
Thanks!

I'd love to see her get some better treatment, too. Please make her less crazy! *lol*

I just finished rereading Infinity, Inc. vol. 1 and was wondering if there might be any plans to resuscitate her connection to the mythos.

I have mixed feelings about this, because of course she used to be Diana's daughter. Not THIS Diana, but still. At least Huntress became an entirely different character post-Crisis, but Lyta just kept on going with her (pretty weird) character arc, just with a new fake mom.

I would love to see Helena written by Gail. A little less crazy might be good...then again a lot more crazy makes for some funny schtick (think Starman in JSA). No, you're right...less crazy. No, I'm right...

I love Lyta too! Not sure if she will appear in Blackest Night but she was one of the "dead" characters shown by Green Lantern's ring in issue #1.
We have seen that she exists on the new Earth-2 (in the pages of JSA), so maybe with Morrison's series (don't recall name) about the different earths coming out we might see her.

This is just a RUMOR I heard on the DC Comics boards, so take it with a grain of salt.
I heard that Karen Berger had an ebargo against using Lyta and any other Sandman related characters in the mainstream DC Universe. :frown:
I hope that it really is a rumor, since I would love to see an Earth-2 story with her and her mom (original WW).

Lyta was used a bit in JSA before its end.

I like the look of the Fury used in JLU. "Aresia." Glad to see more renegade Amazons since!
Peace.

It IS a great question.
She's a very cool character. I think, like a lot of WW writers, the problem has been that there are SO MANY cool characters to get to that she sorta gets pushed to the back of the list.
I promise, I'll give it some thought, okay? :)

WOOOHOOOO!!! Fury has been such a neglected character (like mother like daughter, sadly.) There's tons of potential there even outside the nutso factor. (Although, a thought just crossed my mind, that with her fragile mental state...Helena would make for an awesome addition to the Secret Six!)

Good. Sandman shouldn't be interfered with, you just know there'll be some weird superheroic retcon if we let them into the main DCU.
Helena is awesome, though! Would love to see more of her.

The early issues were solid with Roy Thomas and Jerry Ordway. Then, it really hit a nice stride when a young Todd McFarlane with Thomas started his run. The title wads loaded with great characters.
Sadly, it seems like most of them have become cross-over cannon fodder. At least Helena got used well in a classic story-line.

But Lyta isn't a Sandman character. She's an Infinity Inc. character that was had a key role in an arc in Sandman. Dr. Destiny was integral to another Sandman arc, and afterward he went right back to fighting the JLA like he always had. The Vertigo separation is problematic in a lot of ways, but especially when the superheroes and villains that went visiting there from the mainstream DCU get stuck on the wrong side of the fence.

I so hope that zombie Lyta and Hector show up in Blackest Night: JSA alongside Hawkman... And that they are resurrected as a Fury and Scarab at the conclusion.
I miss me some Lyta being active in the DCU.

Yeah, but the Dr. Destiny arc was shit and not key to the continuing progression of the Sandman story while that's not true of Lyta. She had a great run and a classic presence. I don't want to see that retconned (which it will need to be) just so that we can see her jump around in spandex and either get one line a month in JSA or die/end up in limbo like all D listers.

But Lyta Hall has already showed up in JSA post-Sandman, and she remembered Daniel and everything. No retcons necessary -- her story just moved on from there. Heck, Hector, her dead husband -- Infinity Inc's Silver Scarab, who also appeared in Sandman as the Kirby Sandman with Brute and Glob -- came back as Dr. Fate. But I believe they retired back to the Dreaming after that -- again, this was all in JSA.

And I don't want some retcon involving the Dreaming to happen just to get those two into spandex.
I'm also not happy about the Dr. Fate thing.
The integrity of a Vertigo book's story takes priority over spandex bubblegum and its ever changing, and not always dependable, authors.

Yes, the integrity of Vertigo.
...You do know in Sandman you had the guy talking right to the Martian Manhunter as well as Batman attending his funeral, right? ^^;

I do, and hated that involvement, to be honest.
As much as I think there are good characters out there in the superhero world, I think Vertigo has a constancy and finality to it which makes the stories more worthwhile. The more interwoven it is with the DCU and its constant retcons and the never ending change in creative directions, the more it loses that.

Completely disagree - not that there shouldn't be limits to the extent that the two sides cross over, but the original Vertigo material loses absolutely nothing when touching upon its roots in the original DC Universe. So what if J'onn and Batman attended Morpheus' funeral?
You don't like that they're superheroes? Well then you could look at them as archetypes or symbols or whatever "high-minded" excuse you want - but I found that scene in particular to be fascinating. Superheroes? Well, yes - it's the Land of Dreams, after all.
You don't like retcons with regards to Vertigo "classics"? Ignore them. No one's going back and splicing pages into Gaiman's masterpieces. If you don't care for any additives, don't read them, simple as that.

I don't like that representatives of this universe, the main DCU, of superheroes was included in Sandman. Whilst I do want Sandman as a work to be separate from the superhero genre, it wouldn't phase me in the slightest if they had been heroes made up for the occasion. The reasoning? Because the DCU is subject to Crises, it is subject to editorial and creative shifts, and that the material, in the end, lacks cohesion. I don't want Vertigo products to have that same lack of cohesion. I don't want Vertigo material to be guided by editorial creative directions on licenced out properties, either.
So it's nothing to do with my requiring "high-minded" excuses, I'm not so elitist that I believe that high and low cultural divisions should be imposed but I'm firmly opposed to the kind of person who would demand sequels and further stories just for the sake of a character appearing (let's all show our love for Donny Darko: The Sequel, eh? Or the Dune prequels!) that they liked. That character's story is done and we don't need to draw it out further than it already has been.
Why would we want to draw it out anyway? Any character can serve as the vehicle for those upcoming stories - the writers can do a mini about Earth 2 Fury, have the Helena Kosmatos version run around. You can read Miller's DK: Strikes Again so you can read about Wonder Woman's daughter there. Read the Pre-Crisis Fury material. Write fanfic. Everything about that character is still in play and out there. We don't need to change what's written just to pump something out to fulfill some kind of fan fic dream.

Gail's commented she's doing something with Transformation Island.
Assuming it's similar to the pre-Crisis version, sort of an open-air psychiatric hospital, she might be there.
