View Full Version : What do you think of a new suit for superman, if the franchise is rebooted?
The last movie suit for superman, while a homage to the character from past movies and the comics, looks a bit off with regards to the fashion taste of this era, at least in my opinion, what would be the ideal suit for a reboot to a more contemporary and "darker" ( I expect the next movie to be overflowing with action scenes)?

God I really hope they don't go with a dark Superman. A dark SUperman isn't Superman at all.

Just as the Bat-suit has been changed for the movie, so too does the Superman suit. He doesn't have to be wearing rubber nipples, but his suit can look like something made of alien materials. That leaves costume designers plenty of ways of retaining the core elements of red, blue with flashes of yellow.
While tights were fine for Adam West & Chris Reeve, Brandon Routh & Billy Zane couldn't pull it off. Modern audiences just won't accept super-heroes in tights unless they're also hot chicks.

I think an old-school, padded-costume like the one George Reeves wore in the 50's Superman TV show would still work.
And really, no one wants to see a dark and edgy Superman movie; leave the costume alone, it's iconic.

There wouldn't be any need for a padded suit unless it's like the case in "Superman Returns", where the fabric doesn't allow for muscle definition. Hence Routh needed the extra boost despite getting into shape. The fabric for Reeve's suit, along with the suits used in Superboy, allowed for muscle definition and thus no padding.
Depending on who directs it, the suit will probably go back to being like it was in the Reeve films. Only with a bigger S-Shield

I would be for a Superman costume that removes the underwear-on-the-outside and cape. Only problem is still making it be iconic. The reasoning is simple in that he wants to update for the times. I would love to see a villain take advantage of the cape and that leads to him getting rid of it. Plus, the fact that it is constantly getting destroyed. Where does Clark buy his capes? Someone should get suspicious at some point. He probably has a device make them in the fortress. Or, that's how DC would explain it.

I still think 'ultimate superman' is the way to go. I love the high collar it uses.

Sam Rami and Toby Mcguire probably disagree. I definitely think it's doable, they just need to distance themselves from the original movies. As good as the first and even the second were, we've all seen them already. Something new would be nice, but I don't think it's a new suit audiences need to see.

I think its different with Spidey because we see no flesh. Superman is spandex risks looking camp and it did at times on Brandon Routh

No high collar, since Clark has to wear the costume under his normal clothes (and the high collar from that "Ultimate Superman" design would really show under his shirt).
Also, they are not briefs. At least, as far as I understand it, they're not supposed to be. It's part of the pants in a different color, but no seperate piece of clothe.
The S should not be as small as the one from SR, but it shouldn't be too big, either. The Alex Ross size, a.e., is just ridiculously huge.
I say, keep the color scheme and the basics like the cape (with an S on it, please) or the "briefs", but as far as material goes, try it out. As long as he does not wear latex ...

When the capes were destoryed on a regular basis during the post Crisis era, either he or Martha made a new one. In fact he had several stored in his apartment, the Fortress, at S.T.A.R. Labs and the Kent farm. Otherwise, traditionally his cape and the rest of the suit is made out of the blankets he was wrapped up in. Ergo, they're like him and impervious to harm. And he wears the cape because it's dynamic and creates an impression. Plus, he's used it to protect people and store things in pockets sewen into it. And as to villians taking advantage of the cape, they have. Doesn't stop him from wearing it. Or as the song goes, "You don't tug on Superman's cape."

Except for when the suit tears in both the comics and the films.

They've been depicted as being connected together whenever Clark takes off the suit. In real life, that's not the case.

I have to admit, I really dug the costume in Superman Returns the S on his chest was a great re-design and the Blue & Red was a much richer colour than in the previous films.
Although it would be nice to see him with a more Kryptonian style costume (as now he does have a selection of Kryptonian materials that are as strong as his suit he could technically go for something different.
I have to say I did like the Kryptonian prisoner suit he war in S:WONK #5 (ok never knew that spelt out wonk) made a change.

While it worked for Spidey, it didn't when Singer adopted the same style for Superman.

Ermmm, there was far more muscular definition in Routh's Superman suit than anything worn by Reeve & the Superboys. Routh's suit was as well done as Spider-man's movie suit, and I think in many ways it was superior in design. I liked the suit with the smaller S and darker colours, I think it worked extremely well. Anything that goes off base will be a disaster, the audience won't buy it as Superman and we are talking about a general audience, not the fanboy attack corp. Even the trunks need to stay. Anytime Superman's costume has changed there has been a huge backlash against it, even if the design is well done such as the Electric Blue. Look at some of the outrage over the ROuth suit, the minor alteration to the belt buckle and dark red colour of the cape... people (and not just the FAC) were saying that it Singer made all these massive changes when he didn't. The belt buckle was the only major cosmetic change and the darker red. Singer was badgered about that for months before the film released. And the supposed Gay Superman angle... I had people telling me they wouldn't see it because Superman was gay in the movie.. a month after it came out and I corrected them as I had seen it three times and they insisted I was wrong!
Also, Routh was as big, if not bigger than Reeve and is bigger than Christian Bale, who was huge in the Batman films.

Nope, they are briefs. You can tell they are supposed to be a seperate, thicker material by the texture & shading the artists use to draw them. Aside from that his suit was inspired by body builders in the 30s who wore brightly coloured, form fitting suits to highlight their musculature. The problem was that elastic wasn't invented yet and string ties weren't reliable so they would wear trunks over the tights to hold them up while they entertained the audience.

So, there is blue cloth under the red "briefs"? He pulls the briefs off before getting out of a completely blue pair of trousers?
Or are the blue legs sewed on the red briefs, so together they are one piece of clothing?
I think the latter is the case. But that's just my opinion. Unless someone's got a pic of the suit without Superman (or any person) in it.

Not true. First, Routh's suit didn't allow for good definition because they had to add padding to his shirt whereas Reeve, Christopher and Newton didn't have to wear one. Or at the very least, Reeve didn't wear any. While they worked out to maintain a look consistant with the character, the fabric was the real challenge.
Second, Routh isn't nearly as big as Reeve. Reeve still looked big before and after his accident, even though he wasn't working out like he had as Superman prior to 1995. Routh wasn't as big prior to "Returns" in 2001 and since then, he's big, but not as big.

I'll have to dig through my collection to find the suit when it's not on Clark. There's a couple in there that way. But it is the latter in the comics.

Routh didn't wear any padding. Sorry to spoil it for you. Also, when he made appearances with Christian Bale he dwarfed Bale. Look at him next to Justin Long & Seth Rogan in Zach & Miri, he dwarfs them BOTH. Reeve was very small when he tried out for Superman. He was tall & very lanky. Donner commented on this in most of the interviews about the movie and how Reeve worked really hard to bulk up because he didn't want to wear a padded suit.

Yeah, Routh really got massive for that role, and filled out the suit amazingly well.
But honestly ... a new suit? He's not Batman ... a constant "upgrade from better body armor" is not required ...
If they wanted to ditch the red underwear I could live with it, but that's practically the ONLY change I'd even be remotely willing to accept.
The material on the other hand ... I don't really know. I prefer the spandex Chris Reeve wore, but I thought the "Spider-Man similar material" they used in Returns at least worked well and kept the iconic design. Still ... I couldn't say.
Returns might've been kind of slow, not very epic, lacking some timeless Superman cliches that it really required, and pushing fan limits by introducing the kid ... but it looked f**king beautiful. Clouds. Sunlight. Daily Planet sets. Jimmy and Perry.
We needed to see more of Metropolis (news-stands, diners, apartments, science labs) and less of the Atlantic Ocean. Less Kryptonian crystals. Also Perry's nephew/Lois's husband had to go. That stuff was bleak. I want to see the Man of Steel in Metropolis punching Metallo through buildings.
