View Full Version : Mom bragging: My daughter on Marvel's Runaways

My daughter wrote a ranty thing about Joss Whedon's Runaways, so I told her if she let me look at it and made it more like a review than a rant, I'd publish it over at Geek Dad on Wired.com for her.
And so she did.
Now if I could just get her to do her homework as well....
Here's her review:

And I don't like to spam you guys too much with the Wired stuff but...this is my daughter and I am shameless when it comes to my kid

That's wonderful!
How does she know the Dead End kids? right on. She totally sold the beginning of the series and this line was great
"...even though that level of snarky joy is impossible to replicate."
Congrats to you both

What does she think of the current Vol.3 run?

That's a great review. Give Erin a big thumbs up.
And tell her to quit reading those comic books and finish her homework.

She came into the thread and read the comments and says 'thank you' but would not post because "that's your message board, mom, and it would be really weird."
Kids. Wait till I friend her Facebook page.
And she says she's skimmed volume three and wasn't pulled back in.

Cos I really liked Whedon's story and really get bored by Vol.3, so I just thought I'd check it's not just me, Vol.3 really is naff.

Not just you. I read through the Dead Wrong trade this morning, really disappointing.
Edit: Sorry Corrina, forgot to say that I enjoyed the review!

Sadly you're kid's review (which was really good) was dead on. Whedon not only missed the hoop he came to the completly wrong game. I won't even start on the how the characters acted out of character.

Re. the film: I know that BKV is directly involved in the film they're making of "Y: The Last Man," so the chances are that he'll have a say in how the "Runaways" film is done as well.

Maybe. I don't think "Runaways" is creator-owned, so the process could be different.

No, it's owned by Marvel, but they did say that BKV has first dibs on a screen treatment-- seein' as how he's a fancy TV writer an' all

Holy shit that's good!!!
She did a terrific job of making her case by giving the background and setup, then clearly defining what went wrong and what the problems were.
Corrina... you SHOULD be proud. That's one smart, savvy young human you're raising.
And dang it---she made me want to *read* the first issues... but I know I'd be as disappointed as she was for the turn the book has taken, and for similar reasons.
Sigh.

Well fortunately, you can get all of BKV's Runaways in two handy oversized hardcover volumes giving you one complete story, which is what we did. At this point we're still collecting the series, but it's destined for the chopping block pretty soon if it doesn't pick up.

And, yet, last year, she was flunking English for a while.
She's a classic case of a kid who needs an education curriculum designed to challenge her, not some sort of rigid "you must do it this way" thing.
And, yeah, I'm really proud of her. I didn't do anything to the essay save smooth out some pronouns to make it less of a rant and more of a review.

It is very good review. Does her school have some sort of newspaper that she could work on? That might give her something she would be a bit more interested in and possibly get her some credit towards her English class in case she has some problems there again.

She's busy writing essays elsewhere too. She wrote one for Teen Ink that got put o the front page:
http://www.teenink.com/college_guide/college_essays/
It's the one entitled "Perfect."
(And yes, my fridge is full of artwork by all my kids too. I'm a walking cliche, I tell you.)
