View Full Version : Other Favorite Super Heroines
Obviously WW is the favorite on this board but what other female characters do you like to read about?
I like Power Girl. Birds of Prey (Dixon & Simone stories). Black Canary. She-Hulk. Masquerade (Dynamite).

I always loved Storm from the Xmen she is unique in that she was mother figure as well as leader of the xmen during the best run of the comic (imo mid 80s to around 93).
Rogue is a great character her southern belle with attitude characterisation (at around the same time as storms best) was always interesting to read.

I basically read comics to read about super heroines, so I pretty much love 'em all. I recently ranked my favorite Marvel and DC heroines, so I've listed them below. Lots of obscure Marvel characters, but my all-time favorite heroine is Susan Richards, the Invisible Woman. Over in DC you can see I'm a big fan of the Legion of Super Heroes, and surprisingly, Wonder Woman comes in third on that list! Neil Gaiman's rendition of the Black Orchid pushed that unlikely heroine to the top of the DC list. I could go on and on, but I decided to limit my lists to 20 each. You can read my analysis of my favorite Marvel heroines at http://justgiblets.com/2009/07/22/michaels-favorite-marvel-superheroines/. I'm still working on my DC list, but will post it there soon.

Greg Rucka's doing an AMAZING job on DETECTIVE COMICS with Batwoman, and J.H. Williams is drawing what has got to be the best looking comic I have ever seen. Honestly.
And Black Orchid? She's been my favorite for a really, really long time. I prefer the "superhero" version to Neil Gaiman's version (although I really loved Gaiman's imaginative mini):

At DC I'm a huge fan of a lot of female characters but to single out a few (well slightly more than a few!)
JLA/JSA - Zatanna, Power Girl, Vixen, Black Canary, Barbara Gordon (as Batgirl & Oracle), Big Barda & Mera
Titans - Donna Troy, Starfire
LSH - Dream Girl, Saturn Girl, Phantom Girl, White Witch
Plus Manhunter, Madame Xanadu & Firehawk
Also loved Nightshade in the Suicide Squad days & Catwoman if she counts.
Over at Marvel
Always loved the long time Avengers ladies so Wasp, Scarlet Witch, She-Hulk, Captain Marvel plus Firestar & Spider Woman. Invisible Woman makes the FF for me and Storm & Jean Grey are the best of the X-Women.
Oh and Hellcat & Valkyrie in the old Defenders days.

I'll keep it to a limited list...
DC: Black Canary (obviously), Zatanna, Catwoman. Of the newer characters that I'm still getting to know, I love Manhunter and Batwoman. I really like Huntress, but I'm sort of torn. I liked the re-imagining of Helena in her post-crisis series from the late 80s. I regret that, at least physically, she's evolved into a classic Maxim cover-girl sexpot. There was a lot of debate about whether or not that first post-crisis incarnation was "homely" or "plain". Whatever she was, I thought it was more interesting than her (physical) character design now. As for the actual arc of her character and personality, I think it has continued to build off that original series which is great.
Marvel: Shadowcat (despite the mess they've made of her over the years), Spider-Woman (used to love her, glad to see her back), Mockingbird (hey, she's the poor man's Black Canary, I have to list her even though they haven't done anything interesting with her), Scarlet Witch (another character that, for me, has been ruined as an unnecessary plot device). A lot of the Marvel characters I like have suffered through horrific story choices, so I'm more a fan of their characters in the late 80s.

It's interesting. Scarlet Witch used to be my favorite Marvel character but ever since John Byrne got his claws into her over in Avengers West, she has started a downward slide which culminated in the abominable interpretation that Bendis inflicted on her. She used to rock!
Ditto Spider-Woman. Jessica Drew used to be a major favorite of mine, but since Bendis brought her back, I just haven't found her nearly as interesting.
As for Mockingbird, I actually enjoyed the Clint and Bobby miniseries Marvel published earlier this year.

I agree on both counts. I love Spider-Woman from back in the day, but the more recent stories haven't done much for me. The Reunion series put Mockingbird back on my radar, and gives me hope that she'll be written as more than Clint Barton's wife/ex-wife.

Supergirl, Kara Zor-El, before she was ... well, before Kelly left. Let's put it that way.
Donna Troy. She's the ultimate girl-next-door, but she happens to be able to bring down the Empire State Bldg. with one punch. How can you not love her?
Huntress, definitely. Both Simone's and Rucka's interpretation of the character are the tits. Cry For Blood is a great comic.
Cassie Sandsmark. Oooh! The heroine everyone loves to tear into, tear up, and spit out. OK ... maybe that image is gross. But Cassie rocks, always has, always will.
Black Canary, obviously. She's clearly teh awesome. She might be floundering right now, but she'll bounce back!
Jessica Jones. Badass. Alias is one of the best comics I've ever read.
Emma Frost. What a total, utter beeyotch! But SO much fun.
Mayday Parker! 'Nuff said.
I could go on and on ... seriously. But I'll leave it with one last heroine:
Lois Lane. There's always been something quintessentially wonderful about Lois.

The recent Batgirl/Catwoman confidential arc was okay. And check out the Batgirl showcase. The cover is absolutely terrible, as is the story it was based on, but there's a few really solid stories in there.
My favorite superheroines? Well, as my icon demonstrates, Stephanie Brown and Cassandra Cain are absolute faves. I love them both so.
I also really like Barbara Gordon (especially as Oracle), Black Canary, Linda Danvers and Huntress. I'm liking Supergirl a lot right now, even though I didn't used to. Also Lois Lane. I say she counts.
Over at Marvel, I like all the Runaways girls. I also have a soft spot for Kate from Young Avengers. And Spidergirl!

The cover is absolutely terrible, as is the story it was based on, but there's a few really solid stories in there.
I really have no clue why they used that cover. I mean, the first story is about Dr. Gordon, head librarian of Gotham at the ripe old age of 25, deciding to fight crime because she can and it's the right thing. Oh, and she has a multi-coloured light tracker that can detect anything.
As for me? My other favorite heroines are Dinah Lance (Black Canary), Barbara Gordon (Oracle) and Cass Cain (Batgirl). I'm also quite fond of Huntress, Stephanie Brown, and Zatanna. For Marvel, I love Colleen Wing/Misty Knight, Spider-Girl and Shulkie.
