In October 2006, 2007, and 2008 Wonder Woman Day I-III have raised over $69,000 for Domestic Violence Shelters and Crisis Lines in Portland, Oregon and Flemington, NJ. The three-year combination of auctions of over 400 original art pieces, plus collectibles, autograph signings, and photo opportunities has meant a spectacular turnout… over $69,000 TOTAL ... and two Mayoral Proclamations!

On October 25, 2009, Wonder Woman Day IV — again as a part of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month — will take place, returning to Excalibur Books in Portland, Oregon, and Comic Fusion in Flemington, New Jersey! Additionally, in Portland, the prestigious Lara Sydney Gallery in the Pearl District will host a month-long special exhibit of hand-chosen and framed art from Wonder Woman Day!

There will be multiple Domestic Violence Shelters and Crisis Line charities benefiting from the events. All donations will receive a receipt from the charity for tax purposes.

For more on this year's Wonder Woman Day IV (http://www.wonderwomanmuseum.com/WWDay4/WWDay4.html), including artwork, guest-list, and more, click on the above link.

I wish I had the ability to attend. I have seen the site for years. Perhaps someday I will be able to see this tremendous event in person!

This IS an amazing event. I've gone for the last couple years as a guest and the year before that just as a customer, and I've bid on some auction items and won a couple, too.

I am going to TRY to make it there but I can't yet commit for various reasons. :(

But it's a great event, a worthy cause, a lot of fun, and it's in one of the best comic stores anywhere.

YOU SHOULD GO.

Oh! You just made my daughter's night -- I clicked on the link for last year's WW Day, and she's in one of the photos. She feels famous. Awww.

We had a great time last year and expect to come this year, as well. It's a fantastic event; I wouldn't miss it.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome a fantastic novelist, specializing in very sexy and scary books, Portland resident (and Wonder fan) Meljean Brook!

Her blog and website are at meljeanbrook.com , and is highly recommended. She's a snappy, smart writer and a lot of fun to read!

Glad to hear your daughter was happy (and you) Meljean. I'm amazed at the number of creative people who come to the event icognito. There's all sorts of comic pros who show up unannounced, and last year one of the local county sheriffs showed up and bought some artwork for her office! I'm always so busy running around making sure everything goes right that I barely get time to meet and greet. It's a lot of coordination each year to pull it all off!

And heck, last year in New Jersey, Pete Marston, the son of William Moulton Marston (and the world's only suriving contributor to the 1940s adventures as a plotter) showed up. We've talked about flying him out to Portland one year.

Which one was your girl? One of the Wonder Girls, or the Supergirl? I find it funny that even among the Wonder Girls there were two different "official" costumes. Viva la Wonder outfits!

Gail Simone

If it's okay with Meljean, I can answer that. Her beautiful daughter is the second from the right on the top row of the pictures from WW day III.

That was a fun time. DC Daria Eliuk showed up looking fantastic in a Wonder Woman outfit, and there was another Wonder Woman cosplayer who looked fricking AMAZING and stayed in character the whole time...she was one of the best I had ever seen.

I brought my teenaged son and his best friend, and they had a ball even though neither is a Wonder fan in particular. My husband kept asking if they were bored, if they wanted to go to OMSI or the Zoo or something, and they didn't, they just wanted to hang around the event. It MIGHT have had something to do with the women wearing skimpy Wonder costumes or it MIGHT have been all the cute girls coming in with books to get signed. :)

But the funniest thing is, my son and his friend are both really shy kids, but they are very much gentlemen and not your typical obnoxious teenagers. But when they got their photos taken with Daria, who is (I'm being polite) rather well endowed by nature, we somehow got the EXACT MOMENT in both photos where the boys' eyes strayed right to her bosom, and the look on their faces, hoping they won't be caught is HILARIOUS. I have mercilessly teased them both about it ever since.

Daria is a wonderful lady, she was really great with all the people who took her picture, and the other cosplayer, sheesh, she WAS Wonder Woman!

"Her beautiful daughter is the second from the right on the top row of the pictures from WW day III."

That's her.

I think my eyes strayed more than once to some rather magnificent bosoms, too. The ladies were gorgeous.

Well, let's face it, magnificent bosoms are what make the world go round.

And your daughter was a riot, I didn't even realize she WAS your daughter 'til later. The way she posed for shots was hysterical and awesome.

A LOT of new Wonder Woman art has been posted to the site for the auction... about 40 pieces in the last week! And there are still more to come.

And here are a few images in tiny form that show some of the variety of the art (there are lots more on the page, and they're clickable for larger images as well!

Thank Gaea. Somewhere between Portland and Los Angeles I lost the contact info you gave me to send the photos with your daughter. I will never forget how she saw me from over a block down the street and ran over the entire way. Such a sweetie! It was wonderful meeting both of you.

Oh, my god. Thank you!

Do you know, she still talks about it (and fell asleep in that costume just yesterday night.) And I will never, never forget the little gasp she gave and the smile on her face when she saw you and ran down the sidewalk toward you. I swear, my heart nearly exploded.

And within about two minutes I was totally in love with you, too :-D

I ABSOLUTELY AM!

Wow.

Okay, everyone, we're in the presence of Wonder Greatness!

Of all the Wonder Women I have seen in costume, and there have been some great ones, there are two that are clearly just crazily at the top. One is the great Margie Cox, discussed already, and the other is THIS woman, who was so like Wonder Woman at Wondercon, I thought she might actually be drawn by George Perez.

What a delight that you stopped by, Valerie! Would you by any chance be up for a FIVE WONDER QUESTIONS WITH....mini-interview?

And I'm going to Wonder Woman Day in Portland after all this year, any chance you might be there?

AndyMangels

Okay, so Gail broke the news that she will be at Wonder Woman Day this year, but there are still some surprises to come... in the next day or two!

And have you seen the art coming in lately. Some freaking great pieces!

And coincidentally, Valerie is an absolute sweetheart! I was coordinating a calender to benefit BASE Camp (Children's Cancer Charity) and she was one of the first to offer her modeling services. I can't wait to see her interview!

Hey Andy,
I'd just like to wish you and all involved in this event, all the success in the world. Looks like it's been a wonderful event in past years, and will be this year too. I so wish I could attend.

BTW, I'd really like to donate, but can't find a link, Sorry if I'm being a goof (which is entirely possible, especially if the day has a "Y" in it  ), and missing it on the site, or in a previous post, but could you direct me?

Just about ready to go to bed and get a few hours sleep before the big event...

Went to dinner tonight with the Hernandez Brothers, Paul Gulacy and his wife, Anne Timmons, my partner, and Debbie, Adam, and Dan from Excalibur. Was fabulous except I couldn't eat most of the Indian food, even the mild stuff... Everyone's super-jazzed about the event...

Pre-bids closed at midnight. Guaranteed $14,000 between the two events. My goal is $31,000 as I want it to be the biggest and to have us top $100K in the first four years. But I'll be happy no matter what!

Packed to display in the Collectibles Display:
the telephone (super rare)
the Tonner porcelain doll
A Sears Wonder Woman playset for Mego
Super Queen doll
1960s game, puppet head, umbrellas
WW Super Baby, Super Jr, boots, shoes, brush, sponge, yo-yo, and a lot more

To play on the TV:
WW animated
FANatical episode
WW season two
Cathy Lee Crosby film

To play on the stereo:
14 different mixes of the WW theme, from acapella to bossa nova to techno, plus other super-hero themes

To wear:
my WW logo t-shirt with LEDs that flash to the beat or to voices

To show off:
my newly tattooed wrists with one red star and five smaller ones on them!

Wonder Woman Day IV was a success on many levels, even though the recession was far too evident.

A more complete posting is forthcoming, but the totals raised were around $12,500 for Portland and around $5000 for New Jersey!

Yesterday and today I've been posting goodies about WW Day on our 'News' page [just formed because WW Day was too interesting to go without comment...] but now... well, I just MUST add an Andy Mangels' WW Day page of it's own!
So - after you have a minute to catch up, i'd love it if you would verify the best bio stuff, etc etc. Dad has many links from correspondence over the years, and i link to your page constantly - i just want to be sure i get it all right.
i'm sure you have made WW very proud of you!

Andy, you are one incredible guy!

I think it's wonderful that you've been posting here, Christie. We're all in awe of what your family has done. Welcome!

And could not agree more about Andy's fantastic event!

jeeeeeeeeez, Gail -

You are so kind! I'm just a fan enjoying the discussions - I certainly can't take any credit for forbears!

I am, however, in awe of you! You appear to have an innate ability to understand and communicate with a very diverse range of people... just what the world [and WW...] needs.

I am very happy to be back in the WW world, especially with all of the varied and interesting minds that I am seeing in CBR. I ended up in here [thank you, Carol Strickland, for leading me to Gail's column] because I'm working on a website for my father. But... now i may never leave!

And, yeah... Andy is way up there on my 'good guys' list!

Thank you for your very kind welcome!

Is it okay to "unstick" this thread now since the event ended a few weeks ago? Andy?

Well, there are a few more announcements to go up coming up to be doled out - the total, photos, a video, news about next year, what you get if you contribute, etc - but unstick it if you'd like.

Oh, I see you already did!

A lot of this has been delayed a bit as the charities have been dealing with some other stuff, but I'm meeting with two of the three charities next week.

I hadn't heard from you, but I'm happy to restick it!

Okay, if anyone needs to post new info, that's awesome, but I need to make room for other sticky threads... so I'm setting this one free :)
