View Full Version : Which X-Man has been in more video games than any other X-character?

ProfeZZor X

With the release of MUA2 coming out soon, and the last character reveal turns out to be none other than my favorite mutant (hidden characters excluded), it had me wondering on the history of arcade and video games involving X-Men, and who's been featured the most, either as a playable character, game assist, cameo or background character.

I'm more inclined to think that Cyclops and possibly Storm would be in the running but then so is Wolverine...

Thoughts?

His character was already built from the last few games they produced, so it was just a matter of giving him a new power, and upgrading his visuals to the spikey look.... Besides, they have Jean as the resident telepath.

Jean isn't necessarily the "resident" telepath, because if Vicarious Visions wanted to, they would've added another character with similar powers, which is what they did with a bulk of their roster, mostly the tanks they have. Plus they put the focus on her telekinesis anyways, and only gave her one skill that utilizes her telepathy. So in all actuality Jean Grey is also a redundant character because we already have Sue Storm whose powers act as telekinesis.

How is this a question? Wolverine. He's had at least three games EXCLUSIVELY about him.

Including or excluding the one on the originial NES?

There was a game on the SEGA that had him in it, as well as most of the blue and gold teams's characters.

He's been in any fighting game that has had an X- character in it. I can think of at least 6.

He's been in XML,XML2,MUA,MUA2(not realeased yet, I know).

There was an arcade game where, he was playable along with pyslocke, colossus, cyclops, gambit, nightcrawler....some others.

He is in the latest Spider-man game, perhaps more...

That's at least 16 games.

I know Colossus has been in - about 8

Gambit has been in - about 10

Cyclops and Magneto - EDIT: and Storm has been in - about 10 also

Psylocke - about 6 - same with nightcrawler

Dazzler - I think 2ish.

Rogue - 6 or 7

Beast - 3 or 4 same with Spiral

Jean - I'd say about 5

Professor X - about five (more if you count onslaught, who has been in at least 1 game)

Juggernaut - about 4 titles

Emma - 2 I think

Its hard to to gauge most villains roles. I also skipped a lot of characters, but Wolverine outshines them all.

And just for the record, I have no idea why any x-man but Wolvie & Storm are included in this game.

Probably because they'd rather just include a handful of X-men in the MUA rather than make another XML.

I agree.

I'm not sure why Storm woudl be in it even.

The answer I guess is...

Simply put: games don't need to follow continuity: they follow marketing rules which are much more important to sequels.

I only read the books entitled Civil War, none of the tie ins at all.

It was only then that I was returning to comics after years so ...yes I guess I missed that.

Also to me, Storm is forgettable in many of her roles in comics (not all) that part i eitehr missed or doesn't stand out to me at all.

I never heard that she should have pwned Clor...I would have and do disagree as well.

Is it?

A Storm/Clor match-up could've made for a much better cut-scene than Spider-Man and Wolvie beating up people. I'd honestly rather get visuals for high-powered heroes/villains than for tanks.

Wolverine has been playable in 27 games--I'm pretty sure that rules out any other X-Men or mutant character from being even close in the running for most videogame playable appearances.

I really think its time for them to quit taking the safe routes and go for some X-characters that haven't been featured as heavily in games, but whose powers would make for great videogame playability. Iceman is finally getting his dues--but if Raven can include characters like Songbird, Penance & Iron Fist (general public has no clue who they are) and Jean Grey, Gambit & Juggernaut (who had jack shit to do with the storyline the game is based on--Jean was dead!) then why not take a chance on characters like Banshee, Dazzler, Polaris, etc? Frankly, I would have preferred Polaris to fill the "tk" role (which given the developers lack of imagination with powers, is what Polaris would have likely been) than have that boring flaming parrot cow in yet another game.

Can we honestly blame any game designer not wanting to get stuck designing Kitty a set of powers...?

The 'ninja' thing will be insanely lame for anyone that didn't read the comics or, say, didn't enthusiastically embrace that convoluted plotline.

And the only way to use her original powers offensively would be to script one-hit-kill (OOC, at that) moves.

I think her phasing powers could be used to daze enemies (and a buff to make her invincible briefly). She could also have Lockheed attacks, which would be very fitting. I think the lack of certain characters in these XML/MUA games is the fault of the developers. Kitty would not break the game. A Vision mod (with phasing powers that can be used momentarily) is available and not overpowered. Also--if Kitty is weak physically (as she should be) then phasing through the map would get her ass in trouble w/o more X-Men there to help. Just think its laziness on their part--or so they can have an excuse to cram Deadpool or Iron Man into another game, lol

If the gameplay resembles the one in Resident Evil 5 and you are mystique.

Then let’s say you can't attack her because she intangible, and she can do a lot of damage to you (ninja tricks) if you get to close to her.

So how about attacking civilians, and when she become solid to help them you shoot at her?

Depends on the game genre. I always thought she'd have worked well in the Capcom fighters (as would've Kurt). Plus she has connections to flashier character specific visual elements if that's what's needed (Lockheed, Soulsword, etc).

The ninja thing worked for Betts, and her insta-ninja metamorphosis was WAY more convoluted...

The video game industry loves psylocke. That is part of the reason why liza is still popular to this day, and is known for being tied with the x-men, unlike a villian like the movies and cartoons. She is only behind storm as the next lady in waiting for videp games.

I think it's because they can make a melee character easily out of her since she's a ninja. She's closer to a regular video game character than a lot of the X-men since she has flashy powers and fighting skills.

I hope someone uploads pictures of her alternative costumes if she has them someday.

Probably compiling an NPC list would be insane LOL. But ya, I'm fairly certain that Magneto, Juggers and the Sentinels would shoot up the list, cuz they've been villians in some form in probably every X-Men game to date.

No, i think Psylocke has been playable in more games then Kurt.

RE: PsylockeI think it's because they can make a melee character easily out of her since she's a ninja. She's closer to a regular video game character than a lot of the X-men since she has flashy powers and fighting skills. Exactly. Some mutant skill sets don't work very well for videogames, or it takes a lot of dedicated time and effort to duplicate. Iceman's skills are difficult to put into a videogame. It's been done, but they're kinda lame.

It would also explain the frequency of Wolverine in videogames. Not only is he a popular and significant character but his melee skills are easy to put in a game. They can use existing game engines where they just plug in the character and viola, they've got the basic gameplay completed.

If you count non-playables, Jubilee would be in 6/possibly 7 games.

X-Men Legends (playable character)
X-Men Cartoon Maker (pc- selectable artwork/sprites/music/powers)
Marvel vs. Capcom (selectable helper character)
Wolverine NES (support- gives Wolverine breathing device for underwater)
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance- (shown in the end of the game very briefly)
Marvel Super Heroes or X-Men vs. Street Fighter (can't remember- In Wolverine's ending movie.)
***X-Men: The Arcade Game- (several websites say there was a different version of the game with Jubilee/Psylocke/and Gambit playable instead of Colossus, Dazzler, and Nightcrawler. I could never find it.)

However, she was supposed to be in the following games:
X-Men Legends 2 (she has incomplete files in the pc version of the game... and previews said she would be playable again. Although you can mod her in the game)

X-Women: Legacy Virus (cancelled genesis game- playable alongside Storm, Jean, Rogue, Dazzler, Shadowcat, and Psylocke.) :(
X-Men (pc game- forget the title- she was in magazine previews and was shown as playable, wearing her Generation X uniform.)
-----------
Also, Shadowcat aka Kitty Pryde has been in three games that I know of-
X Men 2: Fall of the Mutants (old pc game- playable and can go through walls)
X-Men: The Arcade Game (npc- captured by Brotherhood- has speaking role)
X-Men Legends 2 (npc with speaking role- can be played with a mod)

Not to mention X-Women: Legacy Virus (cancelled- never released)
----------
Dazzler- 4 games

X-Men Legends 2 (npc- must rescue her in Danger Room sessions)
X-Men: The Arcade Game (playable) :)
X-Men: Madness in Murderworld (old pc game- playable)
X-Men 2: Fall of the Mutants (old pc game- playable)

as well as the previously mentioned and unfortunately cancelled game-
X-Women: Legecy Virus.

Its Wolverine no doubt.

Remember those X-Men video games for Sega Genesis? Loved it! As a kid I loved playing as Nightcrawler and Psylocke. The others were pretty lame.
