I just picked up the run (it was just 1-14 right?) at the Fan Expo after hearing some good things about it. I've just read the 1st issue and enjoyed it. I often enjoy the more contemplative books especially when it comes to characters like Xavier & Magneto.
For those who've read it did you enjoy it? Did it hold up? I understand it got largely derailed because of the Decimation/HoM. Any idea where claremont wnated to go had it not happened?

i liked that version of Excalibu, but the orginal was the best ^-^ but I found te orginal characters such as wicked, and freaks show an breath of freash air. They should have been used more. I'm not sure where Excalibuwas heading though, but i hate the fact the mutants from these serise where neglitic, and lost there powers

I loved this book, and really wish it would have lasted. Aaron Lopresti makes a great X-Men artist; his Dr. Strange wasn't too bad either. The new characters didn't impress me much at first, but I stuck with the book because I loved the Xavier/Magneto dynamic. By the end, the whole cast had grown on me, and I was curious to see what Claremont had planned for Archangel, whom wasn't appearing in any other title at the time.
But yes, this series was an unfortunate victim of Houst of M... :frown:

The pitch and premise were great, although I feel that as the book got into it's double digit issues, or so, the original concept was being cast away.
Get this: Xavier and Magneto are trying to rebuild a whole nation, from the ground up, and assure that its not going to just have what little resources it has left looted, or exploited. Their mutant powers should help them rebuild, and the personalities they meet could aid them towards either defending, or rebuilding said nation.
That's cool. Until...
Xavier and Magneto start finding characters like Book, and Broadband, who quite simply have mutant powers that allow them to serve as the entire communications network for Genosha, or its entire intelligence department. They were "quick fix" solutions to build that nation. Rather than seeing systems being set in place for things, mutants with powers catered towards serving as a nation's resource were turning up.
I was expecting power to be restored when an electric mutant was placed in lieu of a power plant, and a "Poison Ivy" amalgam was going to turn up to restore agriculture. That cheap, "quick fix" started to happen too fast.
A lot of story could have been made out of this, but even if it had been stretched out more convincingly... it was going to be toast by issue #14 when editorial was pushing House of M/Decimation, anyway. So yeah, it was a waste of a great story pitch on a lot of levels.

I loved this book and have all the trades, however I agree with ^^^
The final HOM trade and the first 'team mission' really sucked all the life out of it, but it is really down to the HOM that it fell apart truly.
The Magneto/Sinister stuff was great and I would have liked to have seen it followed up, as well as the AOA characters in the underground system.
Callisto kicked ass, I even started to like her tentacles! Omega Sentinel was another great addition to the team as well.
The main thing I liked was finally seeing Xavier and Magneto on the same page for once.

Up to issue 9 right now. Dark Beast just saw the Magistrates slaughtered by 'something'. and it scared even him. Magneto's got Wanda holed up in Charles' home waiting for him to return.
I'm quite liking this book. Sad that it will be over soon.
I think Freakshow is my favourite of the new mutants. Omega Sentinel was a great idea too. I'm glad she stuck around.

I felt all the characters were lame and uninspired.

Unfortunatly you are getting towards the end of the good stuff.
Ignore the joker above me, money says he didn't read the whole series or was bummed out because it didn't have Wolverine in it.

This book should have been titled "Grumpy Old Men." Instead, Claremont began poisoning the "Excalibur" brand with this crap.

That isn't true. Talisman has always demonstrated very good taste in the past. Lets not be a Judgmental Judy here.

I love that Wolverine is used to dismiss a differing opinion of a book. What about Talisman suggests he has a boner for Wolverine? His favorite characters are plain as day in his signature. Just because Wicked or Book don't rank doesn't mean he was quivering for an injection of adamantium.

But what about Broadband? Now that character was so completely logical and awesome. He should have been A-List.
A+ List, even.

Broadband and Book were the beginning of the end I agree with that.

Yeah, if I said something really stupid like that, I wouldn't want to get into an internet argument either.

What I love most about this comment is that Talisman is supposed to be some kind of cultural philistine for thinking that Genoshan Excalibur was complete and total shit.

I didn't think either of those two statements were that stupid, especially the first one.
darknessatnoon, you just hit the nail square on the head.

Angel & Paige showed up. Not feeling it as much right now. I want to see more of Mags & Charles even Callisto, Freakshow and Omega Sentinel. I hope it picks up a bit.

Or mine either. I meant the statement about Talisman was incredibly dumb.

I did not read 'darknessatnoon's' comment wrong, although I know it was supposed to be a sarcastic rebuttle he did actually hit the nail on the head.
I must have misunderstood your own comment though, but considering my response to the darknessatnoon, you can probably guess what my anwer would be.
coconutphone, I'm afraid you've hit the beginning of the end now, it won't get any better, there are moments but this is all the House of M stuff now.

Yeah I've got the 2 HoM stories left. At least it will feature more Mags and Xavier which is what I've enjoyed best about the run. Didn't care for the Angel/Husk/Viper story at all.
