I like the Prankster. He may not be the strongest. He may not be the smartest. But what's he got? Showmanship!
Edit:
I thought I'd expand on this a little bit. A lot of people wonder why I like Prankster so much. Others tend to see him as a "Joker rip-off". And I agree in a way. Loomis is a lot like Joker.
Old-school Joker.
Showman Joker. Pre-Killing Joke Joker. Jokermobile Joker. Ridiculous death trap Joker. Cesar Romero Joker. The Joker from before he became a cackling serial killer. The Prankster gets to be what almost no other villian can anymore. He gets to be fun and entertaining and colorful and gimmicky, like DC villians traditionally used to be. He gets away with it because 1) Superman is a lighter character than a lot of the others and 2) He has some of that Metropolitan tech that allows him to dial his pranks up to 100. He's like the last gasp of the colorful super-villian. The type that was more about what kind of disruptive antics they could commit and not what body count they can leave behind.
And that's why the Prankster is my favorite.

Yes, but he was really a bad guy, a killer. Luthor was driven by revenge and brainiac was scientifically evil but Metallo was a bad guy. My father thought the six million dollar man was a ripoff of metallo.

Luthor. He's been written terribly, had so many bad turns, but when a writer really gets him, it's amazing. The pinnacle of what mankind could be, only corrupt and driven now by revenge. The perfect foil for an alien raised by good, pure hearted humans.

That's true. The Metallo from your father's era of comics had good points and bad points. He was a really nasty guy, and pretty smart considering he was an ex-reporter. However, it's sometimes hard to take him seriously when his first appearance was almost entirely built around the gimmick that he looked like Superman with a mustache. Then again, most Superman comics during that time were built around such gimmicks, and kids ate it all up.
Now here's a question. Which is your favorite, Dr. Weisinger? I mean, Superman is an icon. So everyone's likely to have a favorite.

Lex Luthor, hands down. Golden Age, Silver Age, Bronze Age (even with the green and purple jumpsuit/armor), Modern Age.... he's the perfect nemesis for Superman.

Brainiac, definitely. He's at least as smart as Luthor, with plenty of alien technology and even super strength in his latest incarnation to back that up.

Agreed, though I certainly wouldn't consider them my faves. I can't narrow it down to 1...I like the classic big bads like Luthor, Brainiac and Zod, the silly ones like Mxy and Bizarro, the evil Supes like Ultraman and The Cyborg...but I REALLY like it when he's overmatched by a cosmic baddy like Darkseid, Antimonitor, Megadon, Solaris, Imperiex, Dominus, Asmodel, C'thylu (sp?), Blaze, 2K Giants, etc....see him have to dig deep and get all mythic.

Its hard to compete with him. He give anyone a run for their money. He cold fit in any universe as well....
Runner up
Doomsday (For a movie)
2. Brainaic is a pain in the butt
3. I like Gen Zod
On a side note Darkseid is a very boring character to me who never amounts to nothing.

Lex Luthor
"Smallville" has only helped enrich Lex as Superman's archnemesis; I hope Johns borrows from "Smallville" for Secret Origin. Lex was awesome before, but "Smallville" did a great job of showing all of his various dimensions (secular humanist, jealous man, xenophobe, megalomaniac, scientist, businessman, a man who used to be good, etc).
Lex will always be my favorite Superman villain. Superman vs Lex, who is Nietzsche's overman.

Zod! Wait Braniac! No Bizarro! NO LUTHOR! AAAAAAARGH DOOMSDAY!
TOO MANY GOOD VILLANS
The one thing I love about the superman villans is there is a giant varity of who they are and what they do. Its not just hit by something radioactive and can turn your hand into a fork.
Being serious it would have to be a toss between Zod & Braniac

If you define "coming-lately" as a first appearance in Action Comics #252, May 1959. Same issue as first appearance of Supergirl.

Doomsday sucks. You spelled "Rogers" wrong.
But I agree Zod and Braniac are the best.
And I don't even consider Bizarro to be a villain although he is portrayed as a mad killer these days.

And I don't even consider Bizarro to be a villain although he is portrayed as a mad killer these days.
Bizarro is really under-used. He's a mentally-challenged clone of Superman with a warped, animalistic mind. He should be on the same threat level of Black Adam. He has been show to be actually stronger than Supes, but too stupid to use it to his advantage.
I believe Bizarro needs to fight someone else for a change. Superman villains always shine when they're fighting other heroes. Case in point: Cyborg-Superman is much better as a Green Lantern villain. Mongul Jr is also much better fighting Green Lantern. He's so badass he has his own splinter corps now. If he wans't so caught up with the War of Light, I would't mind seeing him and his pals paying a visit to Supes.
Another case happened during Last Son, where Metallo, Parasite and Bizarro faced off against several Phantom Zoners and won, killing around five of them. Metallo and Parasite make a good duo.

There are some characters that are really hard to define one way or another. For example, I'm not sure if Mr. Mxyzptlk really counts as a villian or not. He's not malicious and he rarely hurts anyone or engages in easily definable criminal behavior. He's really just kind of a pest.
I believe Bizarro needs to fight someone else for a change. Superman villains always shine when they're fighting other heroes.
That's an odd thing to think about. It's like the worst thing to happen to Superman villians is being attached to Superman.

No, its not that. Its because we see Supes handling those people their backsides so many times they start to lose threat level. Then it is good to show them facing against other adversaries to see how powerful they really are. Metallo, Parasite, Bizarro and Luthor fighting and even killing Kryptonians in Last Son is a good example.
And there are some super-villains that should simply take the clue and leave Metropolis forever. Loophole, Riot and Bloodsport could be genuine threats in Gotham, St. Roch or Star City. Maybe even in Central City. I remember that gal Ariel who had Loophole's gear and gave Superboy and the Reavers a good headache.

I agree with this. It struck me as odd how in Camalot Falls, they had a great Prankster who basically rejuvenated my interest in the character. And then when they did the Toyman reboot, where the Prankster made a cameo talking about melting people with acid pies. Not cool. It's always good to know that there are villains out there that are just in it for the good time.
That's one of the reasons I like Mr Mxyzptlk. Sure, sometimes he gets dark, but that never lasts because the character just can't fit that role. So he's either the source of some bizarre misadventure or the eternal pest come to give superman a headache and brighten up he normally mundane life. Well, mundane compared to a guy that makes it rain.

Lex Luthor is not only Superman's best super-villain, but he is the greatest super-villain of all time!
Oh, that sentiment is heartily seconded here. While Lex is currently quite poorly written, both downgraded in status and woefully underutilized (how many months was he stuck rotting in either prison or Sam Lane's basement, doing nothing but grumble about Superman and making no attempts to gain freedom?), I have faith that he'll eventually return to his former glory. He's just too great of a character to be marginalized for very long.
Runner-ups for me regarding Superman antagonists are Brainiac and General Zod (Terence Stamp's movie incarnation is still my favorite). I'm also tempted to list Darkseid and the Earth-2 CSA, but I tend to think of them as the JLA's rogues as opposed to solely Superman's.

It's really hard for me to have a favorite.
I know Lex is the best, hands down. I love the unapologetic, rationalizing evil jerk Lex of the comics. Hell, I loved Gene Hackman's Lex, too. Self-aggrandizing genius-intellect criminal, and vain.
I think though, the reason I'm forced to say Lex is because of the Animated Lex, in every single way because of Clancy Brown. One of my benchmarks for personal favorites is "whose voice do I hear when I read the comic character?"
The DC Animated Universe had such unbelievably great voice actors that they tend to be the ones that stick with the character in my mind. And none moreso then Clancy Brown as Luthor.
That being said, both Zod and Brainiac are in high demand ... I always had affection for Parasite based on our identical surname, I love the modern edge Livewire brought (she was less "cheesy guns, straps & gear 90's" than guys like Conduit or Doomsday).
And Codename: Assassin and Atlas have grown on me very quickly.

Okay, I get it now. The thing is, I don't want the good villians to stay away from Superman and Metropolis too long.
As for the ones you want to just up and leave Metropolis, some I might agree with and some I might not. I don't care much what Loophole does. Bloodsport should probably just disappear entirely. However, I'd like Riot to stick around. I just think he's neat. Also, it's kind of cool that he has the one super-power Superman might wish he had: the ability to be everywhere at once. I'd give Riot a visual makeover, though. Seeing as Superman already has Atomic Skull, I don't think he really needs two skeletal looking guys in his RG.
I agree with this. It struck me as odd how in Camalot Falls, they had a great Prankster who basically rejuvenated my interest in the character. You have to keep in mind who wrote each of those appearances. Kurt Busiek wrote Camelot Falls. He had a little bit of a lighter touch regarding his villians. The Toyman reboot was written by Geoff Johns who will almost always go for the "gut-punch" if he can regarding how nasty the villians can be.

This is almost hard to type out because on the surface it doesn't make any sense but my favorite Superman villain was Doomsday.
You have to keep in mind that the Death of Superman was my introduction to the comic book Superman. I knew of Superman of course through the films and cartoons but never in the source material.
So the Superman I grew up with dealt with super geniuses like Luthor, Toyman, etc.
His adventures usually had him flying around the city finding and disarming bombs or carrying huge pallets of gold back to Ft. Knox.
Doomsday was completely different. No twirling of mustaches, no control panels to smash, no long winded speeches to Lois before Superman swoops in for the last minute save.
Doomsday was violence. Living, breathing anger, a far cry from the more cerebral foes Supes usually faces.
Since 1993 I've had a chance to read a pretty substanial poriton of Superman's publication history. I've seen some awesome stuff, some standard stuff and, honestly, some stuff that was pretty awful, but nothing, nothing will replace my first experience with the title and seeing Superman, the unstoppable hero from my favorite films, being beaten to death in the street by Doomsday.
It was a powerful moment and nothing I've seen Supes face before or after that can compare.
