(No Spoilers)

Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning took The Authority, stripped them of everything, and then repeatedly kicked them in the stomach while they were down. That is the best way to describe DnA’s run on The Authority. Mix that with Simon Coleby’s dark and dreary artwork and you’ve got Wildstorm’s best World’s End title. I personally grew to dislike The Authority. When Warrne Ellis did his Stormwatch run, I heard rumblings about it but I had never cared for Stormwatch and doubted that I would regardless of how good the writer was. Then Ellis created The Authority from the remnants of Stormwatch and all of sudden people are talking about how Eillis created “widescreen comics” and how violent and controversial The Authority was. So I finally caved in and gave The Authority a try. And I was hooked. I even backtrack to Ellis’ Stormwatch. Then Mark Millar took over and it seemed like the theme was, let’s see how controversial I can be in order to top Ellis. That’s where Millar lost me. I don’t mind controversy as long as it doesn’t seem forced. Add to the fact The Authority were becoming way too powerful. It was boring to read about them. When they took over the U.S. in Coup d’etat it was the first story I thought went along with The Authority perfectly. Having them taking control was not a matter of if, but when. And under the pen of Ed Brubaker it was great. Then Worldstorm happened and everyone was mad at Grant Morrison for not finishing his Authority run. Which I didn’t follow at the time because I could care less about the team during that time.

Fast-forward to World’s End and it is DnA’s deconstruction of the team made me like them again. With most of the members depowered or missing, they actually made me feel sorry for the most powerful team in the Wildstorm Universe. And that is what makes DnA’s run so great. First off, they wisely begin the story through the eyes of Swift, a character who is usually in the background. Through her, new readers are introduced to the members of the team (those that are still around), making the story very accessible. The plight of Midnighter and Apollo is very sad and shows us a different side of Midnighter, once called the most dangerous man in the world. But rest assured, DnA do not forget this aspect of Midnigther and we still get to see him lay some beat-downs. We also get to see how some of the team members deal with not having their powers anymore. Needless to say, some deal with it better than others. One of the things introduced in these issues are the creatures called Incubites. They are infected with what has been dubbed “Warhol Fever” because people infected become these huge monstrosities with super strength for 15 minutes but then they literally explode, spreading the virus. At first, it seemed like it was just a cool idea for post-apocalyptic monsters. But as those following the series know, there is a lot more to it than that. The latter part of this arc has a crossover with Stormwatch P.H.D (Post Human Division). Overall, I just thought the crossover was ok, but I did feel that The Authority issues of the crossover collected here were much stronger. Lastly, I think it’s noteworthy that DnA really respect Ellis’ run because there a lots of call-backs to it in their run.

Overall, if you were like me and grew tired of how powerful The Authority had become, then this story will intrigue you. And it may even cause you to not only come back, but also actually like The Authority again.

Got this yesterday and i've already finished it, it was really enjoyable. I've only read a few Authority tpbs before (Relentless, Harsh Realities) and it was nice to see them stripped of all the power they had back then, and it's taken a much grittier tone now. So... how long ago was issue 8 out? When is the next tpb coming out? What happened to the Doctor?

Glad you're digging it, , issue # 14 just came out, so #8 came out about 6 months ago. Looke like Authority: Rule Britannia (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1401226671/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_2?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=1401223621&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=04Q9TD0YMYC341P2TMZ3) and will be released February 2010

I think chris pretty much caught you up on all your questions except your one about The Doctor.

SPOILERS

Apparently, he went crazy at the state of the world (chronicled in a flashback in issue 10). If you haven't already, you can see how the WSU got to it's current state with the Armageddon trilogy (all in trades):

Wildstorm: Armageddon
Wildstorm: Revelations
Number of the Beast

I ordered this off DCBS yesterday at a 50% discount, so I'll get it with my end of the month orders. I've heard lukewarm reviews about the World's End event as a whole, but nothing except high praise for The Authority run. That, along with the DnA writing team, makes me eager to pick this up.

How does the Wildcats: World's End story hold up in comparison?

Glad you're giving The Authority a try. It is definitely the strongest of the World's End titles.

Christos Gage does Wildcats in more of a classic style I guess you could say. It's not as dark and dreary as The Authority and that's what some people didn't like about it. One thing Gage did manage to do with Wildcats was keep it action packed and he did a great job of incorporating a ton of things from Wildstorm's history (especially characters that hadn't been used in a while) during his run. His final arc which just began with issue 13 is shaping up to be the strongest of his Wildcats run so far. Overall a good read but if I had to rank the World's End titles, it'd probably be:

1) The Authority
2) Stormwatch PHD
3) Wildcats
4) Gen 13

Thankyou! I think i'll just wait for it in tpb then, it's a bit late down the line to start getting the single issues.

Thankyou to you as well! Are those actually any good then? Or is it just generic crossover material?

Wildstorm: Armageddon isn’t essential, but it sets the table for Worlds End, while Wildstorm: Revelations is a great romp through the WSU and has a very good 'Birds of Prey" feel to it, Number of the Beast is probably the most essential of the three cause it tells how the World Ended, while introducing a lot of new characters

I'd have to disagree with chris on their importance (wow, that's a first! ) because there's a revelation later on in World's End that makes Wildstorm Armageddon very relevant. Plus if you don't know the WSU it's a good showcase of each of the main characters/teams.
Revelations is a fun ride through more of the WSU and Number of the Beast is definitely the most important because as chris said, it shows how the end of the world came. So no, it's not just generic crossover material.

Ok, but just to you let you know, the back issues for World's End are pretty cheap. Mycomicshop.com has them for below cover price. And if you watch the official Wildstorm message boards I post whenever mycomicshop.com has sales that include Wildstorm. Just F.Y.I.

My AUTHORITY: WORLD'S END trade is in the mail, so I can't do a comparison, but I very much enjoyed the WILDCATS one. Gage does a great job of showing different aspects of what life could be like in a post-apocalyptic world and the different priorities people may have.

Thankyou to you as well! Are those actually any good then? Or is it just generic crossover material?
I didn't read the other two, but for me NUMBER OF THE BEAST is pretty generic and drawn out. The only issue that seemed important to me was the last one, #8. So if you can find just that issue cheap, I say just grab that.

Apollo looks so flippin cool on that page.

I think my favorite page is when Eidolon regenerates after Angie blows him to bits.

very true except that the whole thing where midnighter and apollo can't see each other so midnighter has to send messages to him through yellow balloons makes it more like kicking a puppy repeatedly. it is that level of pathetic.

except now instead of being unable to see each other because of the smog its now because apollo is in suspended animation after a virus took over his mind.

maybe next issue he'll wake up from the suspended animation with amnesia. just for the drama factor.
