The last line in the paragraph isn't real promising. I hope that I'm wrong because I'm really enjoying this series.

Well the question mark isn't referencing whether or not it's the series finale rather the action of the issue, "how will it end?" So yes it looks like it is.
They should have done a War Machine series closer to the Iron Man movie. of course I'm sure they still probably will. hahah

Damn I guess it is getting cancelled. at least it made it to 12 issues, I hope they put him in his new body, but then he'd lose his cool new powers.

I enjoyed this book a lot and loved his characterization of not only Rhodey, but Ares as well in the first arch.
I stopped buying War Machine monthly only because of the economy and my wallet. It's a action-packed and enjoyable comic.

Yup, looks like it. And only a few months until Rhodey's big screen debut in the armor courtesy of Don Cheadle.

Rather surprised it was cancelled as it's numbers were more than adequete. Maybe with Pak moving on to IH they felt it was just a good place to wrap up the run.

This really surprises me as Ironman 2 will be coming out next year, and War Machine is supposed to appear as a main character.

:frown: Sooooo sad. I was really enjoying this title too. The moments with Ares were classic! And whats more awesome then War MAchine with Ultimo tech?
I do have an odd feeling that Marvel will just reboot the book for the IronMan2 movie.

Well if anything, once the book wraps up Marvel has the perfect book to market to people who want to read a War Machine driven story alongside the earlier Len Kaminski material.
Plus they can just fold him back onto the Invincible Iron Man title where I think he should belong since I think he and Tony have a lot to talk about and I think he also enriches the Iron Man book as a supporting character but he can just as easily drive it as well IMO.

The thing for me is I really think he has way more potential than just being IM's sidekick. I would like him to break away and be his own character but still guest spotting in IM from time to time.

I'm not really saying that he needs to be Iron Man's sidekick, in fact I've never really thought of him that way. He's more of an equal partner to Tony similar to how the Falcon is Captain America's partner.

I agree. I've always perceived Rhodey as Stark's respected peer. Not his underling. Rhodey is not the engineering genius that Stark is, but he is a trusted and respected friend.

Another ongoing Marvel Universe title is wound up. Are there going to be any non-brand books left by the end of 2009? It's not looking likely.
So much for that 'The $3.99 books are there to help the $2.99 ongoing books continue' promise. Although I think most people workedout that was a lie 6 months back...:frown:

It looks to me like Pak is deciding to end it at #12, it could be that he has no stories planned past Dark Reign. I think the possibilty to relaunch the book again is still going to be on the cards, probably after Iron Man 2 hits theaters.
I remember when DR started there was a poll here asking which DR ongoing would be the first to get canceled, and War Machine was considered the favourite... well it was beaten out by Agents of Atlas by a month, and probably could've kept going. I think it was far more successful (in both quality and sales) than what most people though it would be at the time.

The problem is that Marvel is pushing so much crap out the door that it isn't going to be replaced with something better.

Which is his second run on the title, in addition to writing an entire event. Pak has had high profile work before, and I'm sure he'll get even more down the line.
Though I'm sad to see a good title go, I have to hope that this leads to the return of THE CREW

How is War Machine not part of a brand? It is directly connected to Iron Man and the Avengers.
And I don't think this has anything to do with sales...sales-wise it is doing ok. I think Pak is just moving on, and Marvel isn't continuing it.

The Pet Avengers is a good book for one, and second, Marvel needs to publish MORE comics like that. It is only a 4-issue mini series, and obviously geared for all-ages.

It's really weird timing. The Iron Man 2 movie has War Machine so youd think they'd want to ride the added exposure.
I understand that Jim is now a "Cyborg" done up with "Stanetech Based" technology. I haven't actually read or seen the armor in action can anyone tell me it's limitations, if there are any? Does Stark know? Did they confront each other? (peacefully or otherwise) To date what was his best power-stunt(s) and against whom/what?

The Armor itself is basically the same for the most part, it's the cybernetic enhancements that make Rhodey more powerful these days, he has cybernetic legs, arms, and other bits a pieces. When in battle if he should lose an arm, a leg, or a weapon on his armor he has the ability to absorb and reconfigure any technology or machinery in the area to replace the missing parts of his body/suit, which leads too some cool/badass configurations. The downside is that due to the his condition and him being constantly in combat he's prone to going into organ failure. The cybernetic body was only meant to be temporary, Stark had it and a replacement body made for him but now Osborn has it and is basically holding it hostage.

Hmmm:cool: Absorb and reconfigure, huh? Is this ability based on "Nanotech" assembler/disassemblers or a modified "Techno-organic" virus

Wow..... this is a really bad thought.
You are basically saying just put out X, Avengers, Spider, and Hulk books and forget everything else. Because, really, Marvel ISNT going to stop making those books so when they start chopping they are going to go for the ones NOT connected to the big guys.

It's good to see that the general comments here are more about people being upset that the series has been cancelled. If this was the DC boards, you'd have multiple threads about how DC doesn't promote cultural minorities and are marginalising their characters.

I'm really hoping Rhodey gets a replacement body sometime soon. I haven't really liked techno-cyborgs (characters like Bucky with a robotic prosthetic are fine simply b/c the tech isn't the focal point of the character) in awhile, but I like Rhodey.

I was disappointed with this title. I really dislike the current state of rhodey. I think having him be a cyborg that can morph is a bad direction for the character. That was damn near a deal breaker for me. I read it for 3 issues and haven't bought any issues since. I am kind of interested in at least reading the trade and see if the series got any better.

any one think that the repercussions of his actions could be positive and that Marvel just wants another excuse to "re-boot" the series and restart at 1?
Assuming he does go to jail, or whatever, that could be a new launching point for him to escape, but hes been kinda on the run this whole series, so i dunno????
Personally, it does sound like its over for a while at least.

I can honestly say that when they first revealed that he was disfigured in Avengers: The Initiative I was HIGHLY pissed off about it because he seemed to be another victim of a current trend of disfiguring minority heroes, and seeing how extensive his injuries were during "Weapon of S.H.I.E.L.D. didn't help matter either.
Pak has been doing a great job on this book. Rhodey has been turned into a more complex character and seems all the more heroic for the sacrifices he's been willing to make. I'm still not a fan of this new "trend" and hope Rhodey can get his new body and keep his powers, but this book has been very good. It REALLY kicks into gear when Ares shows up.

Yes, Rhodey as both Iron Man and War Machine has been a member of the Avengers (West Coast version). War Machine quit in the issue where that team disbands.

It's a common argument on the DC boards. Ironically, it's usually coupled with the 'DC comics is creating too many token minority characters and giving them their own series' arguments.

From Tom Brevoort's latest batch of reader Questions, it looks like there are plans for Rhodey once this current series ends. Can't wait until they're officially announced

And with WAR MACHINE, there are larger plans afoot for Jim Rhodes that make it make sense to conclude his ongoing series right this moment-I can't get into just what those are right this moment for a number of reasons.

Well the Brevoort answer is kind of good to hear. I was hoping there was some kind of plan here, because canceling the book made no sense. Its sales were doing fine. As well as Marvel could have been expecting from it.
Hopefully these plans involve Pak somehow rather than his plans getting derailed for something else.
Either way, I'll keep enjoying this book until the end.

I really liked the first arc, and the art was fantastic!!!!!! But right after the first arc the book for some reason just became boring, I stopped caring about what was going to happen. I am still buying it though in the hopes that Manco will return (and he returned) and that the story would become better. It's sad that the book is canceled though.
