A.I. (Artificial Intelligence)

I'd actually have changed the trajectory of the movie and would have followed the couple who gave up their Robot Boy rather than follow the Robot Boy himself; the real story was with the human couple and how dumping the Robot Boy affected and changed them.

But, if I'm restricted to the ending, I would have chopped off the entire "distant future" ending and left the Robot Boy at the bottom of the sea always wishing, always hoping and never receiving.

Okay, let's see ... first some good films, or at least okay films...

The Wizard of Oz

Okay, the whole 'All Just A Dream Or Is It' ending leaves some loose ends. I'd have the following lines of dialogue added:

Dorothy: What about Miss Gulch?

Uncle Henry: Funny thing you should ask that. We were just talking about how we haven't seen her since the twister. It's as if she just melted away.

Innerspace

Martin Short's character catches up to the Cowboy, and beats the you-know-what out of him. The Cowboy's hair falls off, causing him to resemble the holographic Doctor from Star Trek Voyager.

And now, on a darker note.

Free Willy

The whale swims out to sea as the credits roll. However, later in the credits, after most of the audience has left and only those who stick around until the credits are over are left, he runs right into a whaling ship. The whalers harpoon him, and haul his carcass on board the ship right as the credits end.

Okay, and now here are different endings for some BAD films...

Manos, the Hands of Fate

Torgo returns, shocks the nightgown-clad brides of the Master out of their trance, and they burn the Master alive, and the whole lodge burns down in a spectacular destructive finale.

Titanic, the Legend Goes On (aka Titanic: The Animated Musical)

The rapping dog drowns. Many of the other animals are eaten by the survivors on the way to the Carpathia. The jewel thieves and the detective also end up perishing.

Thumbelina

Thumbelina realizes she has a bird sidekick early on, so she gets on the bird and rides home without having to get in any further messes with the Gilbert Gottfried-voiced Beetle and the Mole.

Star Trek Nemesis

Data just sets the phaser to overload and teleports out of the place he needed to blow up, instead of staying there to shoot the phaser manually and blowing up with it.

North

North realizes how all the Texans, Hawaiians, Alaskans, and so forth he's met in the movie are ridiculous caricatures, and confronts Bruce Willis point-blank about this. Bruce Willis is forced to admit the whole thing was a dream-scenario he placed in North's head to get him to reconcile with his parents, and apologizes to anyone who found any of it offensive.

And that's all I can think of for now.

Ah, yes. Personally I LOVE their takes on 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory' and 'Lord of the Rings'.

Saturday Night Live had the best alternate ending to "It's a Wonderful Life."

Uncle Billy: I just remembered! The money was in the newspaper I gave to Potter!"

Mob storms Potter's office.

George Bailey: "Ya made one mistake, Potter, ya left me alive!"

Crowd cheers as blow-up doll of Potter is beaten by the mob.

This one's in my mind because I just watched it recently: In Robert Altman's The Long Goodbye, the only thing I thought could have been handled better was the end: I don't think it was really in character for Marlowe to shoot Terry when he tracked him down at the end. . So I'd change that bit, probably to something closer to Chandler's version in the book.

Movies that really are the worst would really need a whole helluva lot of changing, much more than just the ending. Blair Witch Project would have benefited immensely by having the whole cast run over by a semi in the first ten minutes of the film.

Eagle Eye (I know not a classic. I got dragged to see it. My friends who dragged me there have no such excuse) Ariaa succeeds in assasinating all her targets and installs her puppet leader, resulting in her gaining complete control over the US.

Seriously, the movies message about the dangers of going too far in the measures taken in the name of "Homeland Security" would be so much more effective with a dark "Dr Strangelove" style ending than the preachy "Happy ending" we got, which amounted to "There is always the danger that in protecting our country, we may harm its citizens. But don't worry cause the plucky underdog will be there to solve everything at the last minute AND get the girl" which seems to be a fairly neutered way of making a point.

Plus while the movie was fairly underwhelming when I thought Ariaa was going to succeed I was literally on the edge of my seat because I was thinking "This is going to break the action movie trend and have the villain WIN" before I was let down by what was a text book Hollywood ending.

Why am I reminded of the villain's speech from The Last Action Hero at this point?

In case you don't know what I'm talking about, Benedict (the villain) outlines what he can do with the magic ticket if he's not stopped. He speaks of summoning movie villains like Dracula, King Kong, Hannibal Lechter, and Freddy Krueger to the real world, and says "They're all lining up to get here, Jack, and do you know why? Because here, in the real world, the bad guys can win!"

The reason we don't see the villain win often is that most movie producers probably say 'If people want to see the bad guy win, they'll stay home and turn on the news'.

I'm not saying I want every film to be depressing and dark. I'm just saying that there are times when it would make more dramatic sense for the film to go that way and I thought Eagle Eye was one of them.

And yes, I know Last Action Hero. Used to watch it all the time when I was little:smile:

Though when I got older and saw some of the other films mentioned I found it funny that two of the villains mentioned (Kreuger and Lecter) DO win in their movies. Freddy never dies and always comes back to kill again and Lecter emerged as practically the main character of the film franchise.
