View Full Version : Haven't picked up comics in about a year

As a few of you know, I was laid off from work last October, which for obvious reasons put the kibosh on me picking up any comics during that time. I started work back in May, but it's only been recently that I've gotten my finances straightened up enough that I can consider picking up comics again.

So, my question is, what new comics have come out in the last ten-or-so months that I should consider picking up? At this point I have very little interest in picking up any Marvel or DC books, or at least those titles that tie in with the main continuity thereof.

I know that I will start picking up some of my old favorites like Hellboy, BPRD, Walking Dead, Fables, and Powers, but surely there have been at least a few new titles out there that are worth picking up? C'mon, this is a chance to pimp me on the stuff that you like.

Also, when does the new issue of Previews come out?

Darwyn Cooke's adaptation of Stark's The Hunter and ASTERIOS POLYP, by David Mazzucchelli.

Darwyn Cooke's adaptation of Stark's The HunterI think I've heard something about that... crime fiction, yes?

ASTERIOS POLYP, by David Mazzucchelli. What's it about? Why is it so yummy?

Also, I recall seeing some promo pics of Doc Savage with some WWII DC characters... is there a new Doc Savage series, and is it set in the DC universe?

Anything else?

C'mon, surely there must have been something worth reading published in the last year or so...

That's the thing, indie scene has been kind of quiet the last year or so. At least when it comes to anything continuing. There really hasn't been that "Oh my god, you have to read this!" book for a while.

EDIT: Although Chew has gotten some hype. I wasn't overly impressed, though.

Golly was a fun book, but only got a handful of issues out before Hester moved on to other things.

House of Mystery started up at Vertigo, and I'm going to continue to push that as a great read.

Picked up the new Previews; I'll look through it tonight to see what I want on my (much smaller) pull list. Bought the Stark/Cooke book, on Tadhg's recommendation, as well as the Superman/LSH tpb from the recent Action comics storyline (what can I say, I'm a sucker for a good LSH story, especially one where the cast actually looks like the Legion I grew up with, and not de-aged as part of the writer's midlife crisis), and Dark Horse's reprints of Marvel's 70's Solomon Kane stories.

The final books of the colorized Bone were released.

Not sure how caught up you are with Dark Horse's Conan, but its a fantastic series.

I can second Tadhg's recommendation of Cooke's The Hunter, its really incredible.

Also, Mouse Guard Winter 1152 is pretty awesome.

Not sure how caught up you are with Dark Horse's Conan, but its a fantastic series. The last issue of Conan I picked up was (I think) #3 of the new run - Corben was still doing some of the art, as I recall. That's one of the series I'll most likely be picking up again.

And without having seen the color books, I think I prefer Bone in b&w.

I never read it in b&w, but consensus seems to be that the colors are really great.

I know I'm to this thread LATE (hmmm), but want to let you know Golly is not abandoned. Brook is just really slow. We're about 5 pages from being done with #5 after which guest artists will help take up the slack. Hope you come back and check us out.

I'll never quit Image. I aim to have some new books there this year, with hopefully a more consistent art team.

I've only flipped through the colorized versions, but the seps are really good. A lot of the really iconic images of the series look even better, and I didn't think that was possible.
