I had no plans to see this film based on the trailer or poster. After reading some positive reviews, I was at best mildly curious.
But after reading how almost all critics loved it, the box office was next to nothing, and the marketing company was being roasted for doing such a terrible job, I decided to check it out.
This is actually a pretty good movie!
Yes, it has a couple of Disney Channel girls in it, including that one from HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL who has a problem with sending out nude photos of herself. She's miscast as a moody outcast.
On the other hand, it's actually a pretty sweet and relateable film about an awkward teen who finds confidence managing a band for his classmates. There's a scene at the former CBGB, the first line of dialogue is "Dear David Bowie..." and referenes to older and contemporary music abound.
Also, the teen musicians are genuinely talented and do their own singing/playing, which I liked.
There's a good depth of emotion to the story, most of the characters are actually NICE, and there's nothing really inapporpriate for someone...I'd say fifth-grade and up. It's the film equivalent of a well-written YA novel.
This is worth catching while it's still in theaters -- I hope it gets a following on video.
Also, the director of this previously did a film called CAMP, which I quite liked. He has talent!
