I want to listen to an HDTV at a mid-to-high volume without waking up my loved ones, so I could use some advice.

Use a phone jack adapter on the audio out jack on the back of the TV.

If it's an RCA output:

If it's something else, just find the corresponding adapter.

It depends on your model of television. If your TV has a form of analog audio out(Most likely Red/White RCA plugs) then you can by an adapter cable for your headphones. If your TV only has Digital/Optical Audio out(TOSLINK and the like) you'll need to get some form AV receiver or headphone amp to convert the digital signal to analog.

if you plan on using the headphones long term a stereo receiver and a nice set of cordless stereo headphones wouldn't be a bad investment.
