All great vocalists, but lately I've been on a late 60s/early 70s folk kick and just love Sandy Denny's voice.

Also (without repeating, so I'll add a few I enjoy):
Beth Gibbons (Portishead)
Sarah Cracknell (St. Eitenne)
Shirley Bassey

From Latin America:

Ximena Sariñana.

Great jazz vocalist who does alternative rock.

Ana Carolina.

One of Brazil's biggest singer-songwriters.

And arguably, its most sexiest.

Are we talking just vocal prowess, not "hawtness" or presence as a band fronstwoman?

Of those mentioned, I will second:

Pat Benetar
Fiona Apple, I guess?
Stevie Nicks
Ann Wilson
Christine McVie
Tina Turner
Big Mama Thornton
Patti Smith - and I've seen her in concert very recently - believe me, in her 60's that woman can belt out her poetry like no one ...

And add:
Nina Hagen - yeah, she relies on cartoony voice gimmicks, but when she puts her opera training to work, it's awesome.

You guys are going to laugh, but I'm going to say Pink.

No, seriously, her most recent album is really good, much more rock than dance-pop or whatever you think she does, and even if you're allergic to programmed beats there's meaty guitars which she matches with a nice whiskey howl.

Okay, to win back some credibility:

Dagmar Krause, Marianne Faithfull, Siouxsie Sioux, Debbie Harry (when she felt like it), Polly Styrene, Lydia Lunch, Danielle Dax, and you know what? Courtney Love too.

No argument there at all

Debbie Harry (when she felt like it)

I'm a very, very devoted fan - but I've of late come to the conclusion that she's kind of a weak vocalist, and her best moments were highly produced.

Polly Styrene

I would say so too.

Courtney Love

And speaking of a voice needing lots of production --- but her "howl" is pretty mighty.

she seems like a cross of a young Lita Ford crossed with a young Stevie Nicks! O.o

Annie Danielewski, aka, Poe &

Avril Levigne

Great singers imo, even if they are not really hard rockers.

...and you know what? Courtney Love too.

I will back you up on that. I'm not a big fan of hers, but I saw her at concert in the mid-90s where Hole was the top of the bill. (I was there to see my favorite band at that time, dada). The Target Center is a bad place to see concerts, due to lousy acoustics, and most of the bands that day struggled with it. The only stuff that went over well was dada and also Courtney Love's vocals. She had (has?) a strong, clear voice with a good range and surprising control for such a mess of a human being.

Seriously? She can barely sing at all, much less sing rock 'n' roll.
yeah, i think she's got talent. sure, not the best singer I've ever heard, but a good, solid voice, particularly listening to some of her live concerts, where she is actually singing, you can tell she knows how to belt out a tune, unlike a lot of the ex-teeny boppers.

And that plus the fact that she can actually play instruments I guess skews my opinions on her.

I'm always disappointed in Hole's music unless it's a cover song, which makes me think there's a fault in the songwriting department more than anything.
i bought Celebrity Skin and i thought it was pretty telling that they had a map key to show who wrote what song.

I read somewhere that she claims to have had absolutely no musical training at all prior to joining the band. Now if LC would just let her handle all the vocals instead of ruining half their songs by letting the guy, Andrea, sing lead or co lead.

Mm. It was always rock-as-theater, though, not much different from Jesus Christ Superstar or whatever. I wouldn't call her a rock singer, but a showbiz singer who can use rock techniques as needed. (Which might arguably make her better than rock singers who have a more limited range; but I'm not making that argument.)

David Bowie also did "rock as theater" but he certainly is a rock singer. I'd put Bette Midler in the same category. In the '70s, she was actually innovative and progresssive.

did any mention Wendy O. Williams?

a topless babe chainsawing cars and exploding said vehicles while singing such classics as "sex junkie" and "a pig is a pig".

glory!
Allow me to apologize for beating you to it on the last page. Anyways, yeah. She's a legend.

I love Natalie Merchant, especially her recent folk-heavy albums. They're really strong in the vocal department.
I kind of lost touch with her after her first solo album but i miss the sound of her voice cause it has a different quality than other female singers of her genre.

If were are talking about true "rocker" vocalists - then there is Lita Ford, Joan Jett, and then a big drop-off from there

Jenny Lewis (I skew slightly more towards her solo material than Rilo Kiley)

Lacuna Coil's female lead already showed up once or twice! Amazing vocalist--and, to an earlier question, YES, I believe she's indeed classically trained!

I heard Wendy O. Williams was pretty good.

Hail the Queen of Shock Rock! Now, I can't quite say her vocals were great.

But that righteous, awesome video for "The Damned".....

If Sarah MacClaclan could jump off a bus crashing into walls of TV with a bomb in it, I would've gone to the Lilith Fair.

Now then, I've also been laboring under a huge enamorment of Maria McKee's Lone Justice work - especially the Shelter album....

Having been one of the first, if not the first, to mention Christina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil I'm going to now put myself out there to be mocked and say I kind of like Katy Perry. I've loved her song Circle the Drain for sometime now which is shockingly hard rock compared to most of her other stuff. And then for the first time this morning I heard her song E.T. when I saw the video and while the Kanye parts utterly ruin the song I quickly discovered that he was added in a remix and I'm now enjoying the original Kanyeless version and liking it.

And for those who might care, Within Temptation's new album came out last week and is very good. Sharon Den Adel is the lead singer and has been mentioned in this thread.
