Producer Northrop Davis confirmed at the Saturday grand opening of the New People cultural entertainment center in San Francisco that he pitched the Berserk, Baki The Grappler, and Barefoot Gen manga to studios in Hollywood. Davis has already sold a pitch based on Yukito Kishiro's Battle Angel Alita (GUNNM) science-fiction action manga to 20th Century Fox — possibly for James Cameron (Titanic, Aliens, Avatar) to direct. Davis and a Japanese partner also acquired the adaptation rights to the Train Man romantic comedy franchise.

LOL at making Baki a live action movie.

Though, I want to see how they would handle "Barefoot Gen" if they chose to do a live action adaption.

I can see any of 'em working pretty easily, except Berserk. Yet oddly that's the only one I think I'd pay money to see.

Maybe if they wrote a screenplay that functions as a side story it would work. There's plenty of wiggle room to fit in a story during the early part of the Black Swordsman arc. Any attempt to condense or adapt the manga itself would probably be a mistake.

Where are they going to get anyone who looks as hideously ugly as any Baki character?

Well, at least they can do the convaluted plot justice in Hollywood.

Even a 26 episode series couldn't contain Berserk. How could they fit the epic scale long form storytelling into one or even three movies?

Meanwhile, more interesting and plausible is Densha Otoko being considered for an American sitcom remake. With everything from Ugly Betty to the Office being popular imports, I could see that happening. I had mixed feelings on the show. It was a rather cheesy romantic comedy. The main character was annoying stupid. Maybe the US remake could remedy some of this. Of course we already had the 40 Year Old Virgin test out some of these waters. Though certain a major point would be the message board aspect. They'd have to make one up, but I'm curious what they'd base it on like Densha did with 2channel. I can think of ones I visit, from CBR to 4chan to ANN. I really can't think of any show that'd delved into the message board culture like Densha did.

Also, I gotta add that I'm a bit of a conspiracy nut in that I think the whole 'based on a true story' is a load of crap. Ten to one the whole thing was a marketing stunt.

I somehow can see a Berserk movie made. Granted it wont be perfect in any means but I dont see Berserk impossible to make. If thare is any scene in the manga I can see being cut it would be the Eclipse scene. For obvious reasons.

Sure thare would be a mention of the Eclipse sacrifice from Guts but nothing will be shown.

Baki I can see happening also with the rise of MMA movies happening in Hollywood.

There is going to be a whole lot of things that are going to be left out of a live action adaption of Berserk. The Fantasy Land arc being one of them, for obvious reasons.

But instead of being a mediocre film, it's going to be a horrific dissater.

One movie that could be done as a live action film is "Fullmetal Alchemist". The themes of family, brotherhood, and loyalty fit in quite well. All you need is a good director to pull it off.

Or how about "Monster"? Don't even need to worry about special effects too much, all you need are some good actors and to trim down the book a bit. Or make nine movies.

Gunsmith Cats would work just fine, assuming they tone Minnie May's sexuality down at least a bit.

I can see Noir working as well.

Record of Lodoss War, too.

How about Lucky Star?

I'm not sure at all about either Azumanga or Lucky Star. Basically, both are slice of life shows where nothing important ever happens, and LS is too loaded with tons of obscure otaku private joking as well.

I suppose Slayers could be okay with a lot of work, and even Negima could work with a different approach (set it at the Magical World instead of the Japanese academy and try to make it as apart from Harry Potter as possible without betraying the story's spirit).

Haven't they already made a live-action Negima?

That movie sucked out loud!

An obvious choice for an adaption would be Death Note if someone like Christopher Nowlin, or Peter Jackson did it.

The only thing they wouldnt mess up is Battle Angle Alita.

A SF action is one of few things hollywood cant mess up too much.

Baki would be cool too if it was as over the top as the manga/anime.

A movie, too? This I didn't know. Was it a continuation of the series, or another sucky retelling from scratch?

Berserk is one of the best anime ideas to make into a film IMO.

I don't suggest adapting the overall story. Although just adapting the beginning of the story would be fine. There could be sequels if it was successful.

Any of the individual arcs would make a fine action film.
