We all know that Keith Moon, Bill Ward and John Bonham were the shiz-nite. Who are some drummers who haven't been active for a very long time, but are blowing you away with their sound?

My personal favorite is Zach Hill, of Hella. Here his is tearing it up on the song Biblical Violence (http://www.playlist.com/searchbeta/tracks#Biblical%20Violence). This is done with one bass drum and one bass pedal.

Who do you think are some great drummers who have only been around for the past...oh, let's say 15 years?

My brother is pretty well respected, if not widely known. He's in Mercury Rev.

Off the top of my head, I'd say Matt Cameron and Brad Wilk.

Portnoy has been around for more than 15 years.

Brann Dailor (Mastodon) - The Mitch Mitchell of metal.

Never realized Dream Theater had been around so long.... time flies.

I've heard of Mastodon.

What type of music are they?

he died a while back, but Eric Carr was an amazing drummer.

Peter Criss' kit may have been "bigger". .but Carr was a much more accomplished drummer.

I was waiting for someone to bring up Brann Dailor. Hell of a drummer. The intro to "The Wolf Is Loose" is just unbelievable.

In the last 15 or so years...errr, OK, let's make that the last 20 years.

Well, straight away, off of the top of my head...

Reni from The Stone Roses. Incredible drummer! Here he is with The Roses playing "Waterfall (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhNS6MsCEpc)" and "Standing Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEcmKG1q9Ok)".

Loz Colbert of Ride. Here he is with Ride (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nry5hpHGizI&feature=related) at Brixton Academy in 1992 playing the song "Taste".

Matt Helders from the Arctic Monkeys. Check him out here performing "Brianstorm (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WnhgYRF3Zk)".

I'm sure to think of others.

I'll throw in ?uestlove, although he's been around for a little more than 15 years. He's known as the drummer of The Roots, but his playing on Fiona Apple's Not About Love (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdVG02exVUU) is incredible as well.

Everytime I sit down at my drumkit I always attempt to do "The Wolf Is Loose"'s intro.

Attempt and fail.

I have always thought the drummer from Tool was very good.

Oh yeah, Danny Carey is ridiculous. Seeing him live is a must.

Dave Weckl is arguably the best jazz drummer working right now. Probably on the extreme edge of the stated criteria because his first solo session was 1990.

How does Weckl's music fare overall? I see that he has a band.

I'd say he's got one of the better post-bop/fusion groups going. Maybe a little too reminiscent of The Yellowjackets. 2000's Transition and 2005's Multiplicity are both solid albums. Unlike some monster drummers he doesn't overpower the rest of the quartet.

Have you seen that Youtube clip of him and Tomas Haake of Meshuggah doing Triad live? It's friggin' nuts, I'll see if I can find it.

And here it is. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qR6cWXSfR1I)

Ugh. While a technical master I've never liked Weckl's style. Its like what musicians call "chops for chops' sake", meaning playing fast and intricate but not musically, kind of leaves me cold. But he is a freak of nature as far as what he can do on the drums so I guess its how you define "best".

I'll throw out some modern jazz drummers I dig; Jeff "Tain" Watts, Lewis Nash, Brian Blade, Bill Stewart, Jeff Ballard, Chris Dave ... I also like Matt Cameron and ?uestlove.

Bill Stewart and Brian Blade are both near the top of the list of great, younger jazz cats {Blade plays in alot of other settings too}. Eric Harland isn't that well known; but he's a monster.

Brian Blade just released a record as a singer/songwriter on Verve Forecast. He's a good singer and guitar player as well.

Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater

Yes. Also Gavin Harrison of Porcupine Tree. Chuck Biscuits from Danzig was great. He played a minimal kit too. No like Portnoy or Neil Peart who played on kits so big people could live in them.
