Ok so Ive read Year One before but thats it, I just started reading batman comics. I got both of the Batman reborn comics today and read them both. So im lost with whoes who in the comics. Am I right in saying that the batman in these was nightwing who was the original robin? If so what is his name? Also who is the new Robin? He says his father alot, is he talking about Bruce Wayne? Also what happened to Bruce? Sorry I know that Im asking alot but I want to make sure I understand the main parts before I get to into the comics.

Looks like you've managed to get a pretty good handle on it so far. Dick Grayson was the first Robin, then he became Nightwing and now he wears the Batman costume. The new Robin is Damian Wayne, Bruce's son, who was raised by an assassins' cult. All of Bruce's friends think he's dead, but he's really stranded somewhere in time.

Batman -- Dick Grayson. Formerly Nightwing. Formerly Robin #1
Robin -- Damian Wayne. Bruce's son who was only recently revealed.
Red Robin -- Tim Drake Wayne. Formerly Robin #3
Batwoman -- Katherine Kane. Relatively new character. No former identities.
Jason Todd -- Hasn't appeared yet, but he will. Formerly Robin #2. Back from the dead, and way off of his kilter.

If you want to read the book that introduces Damian Wayne get Batman & Son
If you want to read a book that summarizes alot of Batman history and features alot of characters get Hush
Jasons return is told in Under the Hood v.2 [/I]
these are all good books
Jason was killed in a story called A Death in the Family, basically he and Batman go looking for his mother in the Middle East and they find a woman they believe is her working with the Joker. Batman tells Robin not to confront them on his own, it's too dangerous, but Jason disobeys this order. Joker beats him to a pulp with a crowbar bar, locks him and his mother in the building and detonates a bomb. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman:_A_Death_in_the_Family
DC had a big crossover event call Final Crisis with all the heroes against a "God of Evil" called Darkseid. Towards the end Batman creeps up to him and shoots him with a god killing bullet. In return Darksied blasts him with something called the Omega Sanction which has unknown properties. It doesn't actually kill outright, alot of people think it sends the victim through a spiral of lives that get worse and worse. After the blast we saw Superman holding a charred corpse in a batsuit. The final page of the miniseries however was an image of someone in Batsuit pants, with a beard, painting a bat on the side of a cave wall.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_crisis

Batman was hit by Darkseid's omega sanction, which sends the victim through a series of increasingly worse alternate lives, also called "the life trap". The only person to escape is is the second Mister Miracle. Bruce should be able to do it too, eventually.
Jason was killed by the Joker in the storyline "A death in the family". He came back when Superboy Prime (i'm actually being serious here) punched the walls of reality and Jason woke up in his coffin.

ok thanks ill try to pick up the other stories to learn the back story. Is final crisis being collected or is it a set of comics I have to pick up? Also what other current comics go along with Batman and Robin? Like does Red Robin intersect with Batman and Robin?

Final Crisis is availible as a hardcover right now, though Batman isn't the main focus.
Batman and Robin kind of stands alone, though Red Robin is a fine comic too.

not a good idea. it's very confusing and features dozens of obscure DC characters, you won't stand a chance. though if you see issue 6 for sale anywhere, that's the one where Batman gets zapped.

nothing really intersects with B&R, though if anything Streets of Gotham is probably the closest since it has both Batman, Robin, a focus on the larger Gotham City and a rotating set of villains. Batman is just Dick Grayson and Two-Face at the moment, and Red Robin is a great book but doing it's own thing completely. Streets is written by Paul Dini, one of the main writers and creators of The Animated Series. He has a very smooth, easy style and good grasp on characters.

Just be aware that while Batman does get hit by the omega sanction, Final Crisis isn't really a Batman story. Some people found the story really confusing.
Personally, I know barely anything about DC continuity or obscure characters and I really loved it, while others seemed to dislike it but were in the same situation as me in terms of knowledge of continuity and characters. Before reading it, try not to go into it thinking it's gonna be a standard superhero comic.

Depending on what kind of luck you have with ebay, I get my comics from a place called Comic Fusion(www.comicfusion.com), and they currently have Streets Of Gotham #1 listed as in stock. If you're planning on getting any titles regularly they'll pull them for you every week and ship them to you monthly or more frequently if you request it, and you get 20% off the cover price for any titles you subscribe to. Also they've always been very helpful about ordering back issues for me. Let me put it this way: There are nine comic shops within driving distance of my house and I still prefer to use Comic Fusion. Not a pitch by the way, I'm just pleased with the service they provide and wanted to share with a fellow comic fan in need.
