Interesting news from the DC Nation panel at Chicago Convention...

Brian Azzarello will write a "Batman/Doc Savage" special with Phil Noto art and J.G. Jones on covers, Sattler announced. It will be published in November, and does not take place in the DCU.

"We're creating a 53rd world," Azzarello joked. "Doc Savage is an established character in it and Batman is just getting started. Batman month one." The Dark Knight quickly attracts the attention of established heroes like Doc Savage, Blackhawks, the Spirit, and the Avenger. "There are no superpowers, so I feel comfortable writing that stuff--rather than the stuff you guys love," the writer joked.

"I pretty much taught myself to draw and paint by drawing Doc Savage," Jones said.

A mega-series will follow with art by Rags Morales.

I'm not the greatest Azzarello fan though I did enjoy and appreciate The Joker quite a bit, and I have to say this sounds about as intriuiging as you get get for another Batman story from the guy. Not so keen on art from Phil Noto - it feels a little too clean for what I'd expect from the concept and writer though I'll definitly be keeping an open mind.

Doc Savage is awesome and it will be great to see a Batman story confronting his thematic origins by one of the best "pulp" writers in the biz.

edit - covers and comment from Azzarello are up at the DC Blog http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/

Once again, I find myself wondering: Dick or Bruce? So far all of the one shots and most of the minis have featured Bruce. On the other hand, Doc Savage is a new acquisition for DC, correct? So it would make sense that the first Batman he meets would be the current one. Then again, I guess there's no reason to think that DC would treat him as a completely new character, so maybe this story is set before Bruce's disappearance.

Never mind. I just read that a little closer.

There will be a new "Spirit" series spinning out of "Batman/Doc Savage," Sattler said.

Interesting... Seems like a Universe with nothing but Pulp heroes, wasn't this hinted at in a previous panel, With characters like Tarzan also appearing? Or am I thinking of something else?

I think Doc Savage is public domain like Sherlock Holmes and Dracula.

you were probably reading about the maxi series that begins after the Batman/Doc Savage special. featuring Rima the Jungle Girl. I'm assuming it will focus on the pulp heros in general and not so much Batman.

Thank you for those Links, now I'm looking foward to this new First Wave series coming. Azzarelo must have read my freaking mind or something cause I've been wanting to see something like that for years!

A "new" Spirit series? I don't get the point. The book quickly flopped after Cooke left.

If this is supposed to be the launch of a new pulp hero line, why not do a team-up book with the characters like the Bob Kane Batman, Doc Savage, and the Spirit?

That's exactly what Azzarello is doing.

I'm almost certain it's not.

Do Conde Nast still have the rights to Doc Savage? I seem to remember them suing someone hosting the original novels online, contending that they were public domain.

A question about the Spirit.

Did DC outright buy him like they did with Charlton comics, or are they "liscensing him" from the Eisner estate like they are with Static and the Milestone heroes?

Conde Nast still own the rights to Doc Savage, which they've owned since they bought the character from Street & Smith in the late 60's. DC is just licencing the character, much like what they're doing with the Spirit. I believe Conde Nast also owns The Avenger.

Can't wait for this project and the miniseries that follows. I love the pulp era characters. Still hoping DC will secure rights for the Shadow as well, another Conde Nast character.

And in the process, speaks of DC acquiring the rights to the character (answering the earlier question).

I feel bitter that The Phantom can't be included in this

The Phantom and the Shadow would both be very cool to see in this setting. I'm very much looking forward to it.

Add the Unknown Soldier to that list as well. I could also see a really cool, very slight re-imagining of Green Arrow in this universe as well. Just enough to make him more of a hunter/stalker type (no cheesey gimmicks) who better fits a noir atmosphere.

I've been dreaming about a non-superpowered universe for years now. You can include re-imagined versions of Checkmate and Kobra in here as well.

New universe, new Batman. This is a different take on Bruce Wayne in his first month under the cowl if I read the previews right.

Please, I hope so. Definately sound like that and I couldn't be happier. Besides, I don't think "Bat-god" fits into what Azzarello has planned.
