Where would be a good point in the series to start reading 'Batman'?
I'm guessing you will say now since battle for the cowl just finished, but I would like to start somewhere much earlier and make my way through to read about the previous batman (assuming the current Batman is someone new, I haven't read BftC yet - no spoilers pls). Plus I would like to build a collection. However, I do not have infinity moneys to start sub-300.
Thanks

Try some good collections, like Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns or Year One. They are still the best Batman stories out there.

Forget this idea of reading sequentially through hundreds of issues, it's not very feasible, it's not necerssary for understanding the overall story nor would it be much fun. Collections are the way to start, filling in gaps in the timeline as you go and picking up whatever looks interesting.
If you havn't read them yet the best collections to start with are Dark Knight Returns, Year One and Hush. Don't listen to anyone who says otherwise
If you want to start on singles grab the first two issues of Batman & Robin and Streets of Gotham from shops while you still can, third issue is out this month. You can jump right in just fine and they're basically the main books in the line-up right now. If you become interested you can go back and get the collections that lead-up to them.

I did. It was feasible, and fun. Started at Year One, and went from there.

Very feasible is what I said . If you had the patience and ability to do that then cool, wow actually, but for instance where I live there's no way I'd be able to track those down in stores and doing it on ebay would probably cause a nervous breakdown not too mention rob me of money for food and drink. I also have little desire to read every issue published in either series, there's more than enough Batman comics and good comics in general whether in collections or current runs to keep be busy. I just think it's worth mentioning to new readers who assume they need to read every issue going back decades....that's really not necerssarry. If they still want to go that effort though then great go for it.
