View Full Version : Paula Abdul leaves American Idol: OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

She announced it on her Twitter last night it seems:
"With sadness in my heart, I've decided not to return to #IDOL. I'll miss nurturing all the new talent, but most of all ...being a part of a show that I helped from day1become an international phenomenon ... What I want to say most, is how much I appreciate the undying support and enormous love that you have showered upon me ... It truly has been breathtaking, especially over the past month ... I do without any doubt have the BEST fans in the entire world and I love you all."
Guess #Iranelection is getting bumped down a few search spots today. (I'm kinda ashamed I understand Twitter lingo better these days...)
Meanwhile, the sun still shines and life continues as miserably as it did yesterday.

Her contract was expiring soon and her agent was pissed that none of the producers seemed to care. Cowell had threatened to leave the show after the next year , but didn't once Fox backed up and handed him a $100 million dollar deal. They also signed Seacrest to a $45 million dollar deal.
The agent was like ....where is Paula's deal to stay ? Of course sadly ...once they hired that new female judge last year ...we sorta knew she was being groomed to take Paula's spot.

Of course i never understood why they hired someone who has admittedly not a very good singing voice to judge a singing talent show in the first place.
But i guess they felt they needed someone with some kind of pop star cache in the beginning cause most people didn't know who Randy or Simon was outside of industry circles and she was probably cheap and available.

Yep.... plus even though Paula was the Queen of crazytown , she still had that sweet ...loveable Paula vibe. She was loveable kooky. You just had to watch to see what kooky thing she would say next on the show.

She's already confirmed she is coming back next year. I doubt she'd be working without a contract in Hollywood. I say she has a deal. Its not a huge one like Seacrest's or Cowell's ....but she likely has a deal to come back.

If she ends up really being off the show.... I don't think it will hurt it at all. Most if not all of her comments the past several seasons have been rambling politcal-speak like comments that use a lot of words but don't really say anything. Kara at least had more to offer by way of actual critiques.
And the producers have said that she would be back, so Paula may be the fifth wheel here.

You don't need to be able to sing to be a judge of talent. For example, most of us on this board can tell when we've read a good comic despite not being able to write/draw ourselves.
She actually had a good season judging this season. I'd much rather get rid of Randy or Kara.
Guess #Iranelection is getting bumped down a few search spots today. (I'm kinda ashamed I understand Twitter lingo better these days...)
Random trivia: For one day in June, #dannygokeyisadouche, was actually hotter d than #iranelection. (Twitter eventually put a stop to the thread because of all the nasty words being exchanged back and forth)
They re-signed Kara for one year is what I heard.
Good this ,could be the sign of the end of American Idol.Musicians rejoice.
I thought I remember reading that Idol could lose 10% of it's viewing audience for the next 15 years and still be a top 10 show....
Unfortunately American Idol was the best place for musicians and singers to get noticed at the moment.
Hear that more and more people are getting signed through Youtube...so that might not be for long...

The thing is for me ,alot of them do not deserve it ,I am more of a fan of people who make a play their own music and getting their fame by working hard and not having a tv show put them on top.

In fairness, most of Idol's winners have been people who can at least sing well. The show has never produced a Britny Spears equivelent as a winner.
As for Paula, was it ever confirmed or refuted that she actually had a relationship with that douchebag contestant several seasons ago?
While her kookiness probably does help with publicity, it's probably a smart move to cut her loose now, rather than continue risking that she'll say or do something that actually hurts the show.
How do the early rounds work with four judges, anyway. What happens when it's 2-2?

Last season, I really got the feeling that Randy wasn't even really there.

It is way harder to win American Idol than it is to get a record deal/signed to a label on your own. Many of the contestants have absolutely paid their dues, a large number of them do have self-produced albums/small indy stuff out. out before they were ever finalists on the show.

How would she be a fifth wheel because the show would have two female judges?
No, because the show with her had four judges when three is sufficient for a variety of opinion. And because often, as I already stated, Paula's comments were a lot of words strung together that just didn't say anything about the performer other than that they looked good. Idol isn't a beauty competition, or a dance competition, it is a singing competition. The fact that someone looks stunning means nothing when their performance that evening consisted of a bad arrangement and several flat notes.
And how many times did the shows creator/Producer (Simon) say of Paula "I don't even know what you just said"? About half as many times as I thought it.
The show will continue with or without Paula. One person does not make or break a media machine like Idol.

So basically, no one that is commercially successful can make real music?
Way to present a no-win situation there.
I'm sorry, but I find your position to be bologna. It's all music. It might not be to your liking, but it's still music. Is Beethoven not music because "it's only classical sound" and Mozart and Bach did it first? Moreover, do you think any of these gentlemen were not trying to make commercially successful music during their lifetimes?
Did the Beatles "not make real music?" After all, they were certainly top 40 in their day.
Music changes over time. 20, 30, 40 years from now the kids who are teenagers today will lament whatever the "latest and greatest" is as meaningless, overproduced junk while insisting that the stuff that was top 40 today (or some of it anyway) was "real music."
ON TOPIC:
Simon is the only judge they need. Everyone else is just filler. Paula was amusing in her own way, but I'm sure folks will still tune in.

Not only that, but I remember hearing about people complaining about the show running long. It happened a couple of times, and they even had to change the format to where only 2 judges could comment after each song, and they took turns.
So 4 judges is just too many anyway.

But the beatles and morzart actually made their music but what is considered modern pop is just a bunch of kids singing and then a producer and the engineer makes the music. It is not the artist that does ,that to me is not really music.
It supose to sell to the lowest common denominator.
Okey I admit my love for underground heavy metal might make me biased to the underground and not being too keen to what is mainstream.
Phil Clark
08-06-2009, 01:47 PM
Just remember that what was once underground music is now called Classic Rock. Everything has it's time. All music has value if it moves someone on some level, whether it be grunge before grunge became pop, alternative before alternative became pop, etc....
Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it doesn't have value. Art, music, movies, writing, it is all subjective.
And remember, if everyone liked the same things, then there would be no Underground Heavy Metal scene for you to be enjoying right now. It all has value, even if not to you.

Yeah, they both are definitely up there on the "I can't believe that no one has punched them in the face yet" list.
But Sacha Baron Cohen has got to be #1 on that list. I think he's hilarious sometimes, but have no idea how no one has even thrown a punch at him yet.

This season it really does seem a lot like all of the contestants have been slipped stimulants and are all just extra aggressive. The producers encourage that anyway. That's pretty much how "reality tv" works. Be dramatic, we'll keep you around.

Have you even been watching Idol at all? Paula's "judgement" is often nothing at all about the performance at all. She just babbles about how great a person the contestant is, and how great they look, or how well they moved. None of which SHOULD have any impact on the results.
Simon is pretty much dead on with his comments, and so usually is randy (around all his "Yo"'s and "Check it out"s and "Dude"s and "Dog"s).
Kara is capable of bringing the heat (bikini girl) as well as articulating her thoughts.

Sarcasm much? I simply was saying that Paula's comments have little to do with what Idol is about. And often make no sense what-so-ever. Simon (whom I didn't comment that much on) is often dead on with his analysis. When a performance sucks, he calls it. The audience loves that performer so Simon gets boo'd for being accurate.
Bottom line, I think that Idol will continue on without Paula. But Paula will likely slip back into obscurity without Idol. Shame too... I do like her. I actually own her first two CDs.
