I had never heard of this movie until the other day, when it was mentioned in relation to someone involved with the new Superman project. From the redundent title, I was expecting a b-flick, but it appears to have a substantial budget. It also stars Rain, the Korean singer best (probably only) known in the U.S. as a nemesis of Stephen Colbert. The trailer also has me thinking that if only they'd included some fireballs and monsters, it could have been called Ninja Gaiden. Probably be better than Streetfighter: Legend of Chun Li.

Anyone been following this movie? Or the work of Mr. Rain?

I heard about it a little while back. I think it will turn out pretty cool. I was turned off by the name at first, but the more I see of it, the more I begin to like it.

In terms of the acting career of Rain, he has worked in a number of Korean TV dramas and movies, but pretty much all of them were in the drama genre. Most of us here, if we were to recognize him, would remember him as the Japanese racer in the recent film "Speed Racer."

Hmmm, is the name really redundant if he's an assassin who targets ninja? Looks like a pretty decent action flick. I may have to go see it.

This is going to be so rad it's not even funny. So cheesy it can't help but be awesome.

Don't understand the release date, but what the hell.

Im sure most of you are aware of this movie, id just like to gauge the interest for it. im extremely hyped for it myself. a rated R action movie from the Wachowski brothers was enough to get my atention. the Ninjas are the icing on the cake. lol. im interested to see if it will be as gory as people are saying it is. ought to be some good mindless fun. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4pEKQ_zUBo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1m6e-4d7M08 http://www.kungfucinema.com/tv-spot-for-ninja-assassin-10587

I love anything and everything that has to do with Ninjas.

Imagine my disappointment when I didn't like Shinobi for the PS2. :(

I think the previews have been looking pretty cool. But I'm not sure how to feel about this tidbit I read on IMDB.

Producers Andy Wachowski and Larry Wachowski hired J. Michael Straczynski to completely rewrite the script six weeks before filming started, as they weren't satisfied with Matthew Sand's original work. Straczynski finished the rewrite in 53 hours.

I wouldn't trust anything on IMDB. I'd wait for the word of the mouth from Rotten Tomatoes, they seem more reliable.

I might see it since my expectations aren't too high and all Im looking for in that is a good action movie that involves ninjas

I figure it already looks way better than this. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDWx_zI_QGs) Scott Adkins does cool moves, but that just looks like total crap.

The nicest thing I can say about that video is that the fight scene in that looked better than most of the fight scenes you would see in the American Ninja movies

J. Michael Stracynski?

What the hell!? Nothing says Ninja movie like the guy who wrote Babylon 5, Murder She wrote, aaaandd.... ruined Spider-man. :frown: I hope nobody comes back to life in a magical Cocoon.

I believe JMS can write for Ninjas like I believe an older Lee Van Cleef could be a Ninja. Believe me, they tried!

If you like violence and action. Then go watch this movie and let the the little girls go and watch New Moon. This is a man movie the fight scenes are well put together and the pacing is breakneck. It does not dwell on some forced ass romance like so many action movies put out today. It is probabaly the most violent Kung Fu movie I have ever seen!Don't believe the hype you have been hearing on the net the movie kicks ass!It is well worth your ten dollars.

I have trouble with the title. It's kinda, y'know, redundant.

Unless a movie comes out called, "Ninja Dry-Cleaner" or something, that would be more of a surprise.

Actually. It isn't.

The main character is a ninja assassin. He assassinates Ninja.

JMS cool points just went up 10 notches. I loved it as well.

So the movie features some ninjas playing World of Warcraft?

I guess that could be cool . . .
No, the other RPGs. People shoot rockets at ninjas.

How stupid are ninjas that fight guys with rockets?

Well, how many ninjas are there fighting the guys with rockets?

One could pull it off. More than that and you invoke the inverse ninja rule.

I watched an interview with some of the extras from this movie.
Best quote from one of them: "When I was a kid, I wanted to be a ninja. When I was in college, I wanted to be Rain (Bi)."

(If you didn't know, Rain is a super popular South Korean actor/singer. You might also know him from The Colbert Show...)

This movie has two problems:

1. They start of swinging, and can't follow through. The opening sequence is huge in terms of violence and blood, but afterwords, most of the fights are in the dark and hard to follow.
2. Do they even know what a ninja is? Tales of Symphonia did a better job explaining ninjutsu than this film.

The makers of this film didn't know what the hell they were doing, and the movie shows this incompetence.

Ninja Assassin = Elektra Saga

Raizo was trained by ninjas, he has heightened senses; he can tell if people are lying by listening to their hearts, his first true love was killed by his rival who used her own weapon against her, and Raizo fought a big, bald dude called (The) Kingpin. Furthermore, he is chased by a reporter, I mean forensic researcher, who wants to know the truth about him.

It was probably the best American movie about Ninjas since...hell, I have no idea.

I certainly wasn't expected the see the biggest Ninja vs. solider battle since You Only Live Twice, that was a pretty cool finale. The last duel was a bit of a letdown, falling into a typical cliche.

They actually overdid the blood and gore at times, making it seem too absurd and cartoony.

I was totally thinking "Kingpin" from that guy, too.

Ninja Assassin did what I expected it to do. Provide me a entertaining action flick that involved Ninjas and crazy martial arts.

The Kingpin homage was the highlight of the movie.

What a horrible waste of time and money....it was a total 300 rip off...the little bald kids pummeling one another in the training yard - the warehouse fight scene with the intermittent slow-mo effect with that scattering sound effect.

Also, the last scene was so dumb....here are these near-superhuman ninjas all grouped in this one little colony out in the middle of nowhere....ninjas who apparently can hear your heart beating from across the room....and somehow the good guys manage to stage an entire military battalion complete with hummers right outside the front door without being heard.....?

Rain.....wow.......if only acting ability relied on how many sweaty ab shots you can show in one film.....

should have watched Ong Bak 2.

I would go even further, and just call it Oliver Twist with ninjas as envisioned by Frank Miller. The final fight between this movie's Fagin (Ozunu) and Raizo looked very much like something out of a Frank Miller comicbook. Especially, when during their fight you could only see their silhouettes and blood spatters.

And, if The Ozunu Clan would wear red in stead of black, they could be mistaken for The Hand.

I kind of let that slide on the idea that everyone was paying attention to Raizo and his punishment.. Also, maybe they were hybrid hummers, approaching silently under 5mph. :)

Raizo getting caught earlier was a bigger stretch, since we had specifically seen how amazing his ninja senses were.

Of course, the truth is not the kind of movie where that kind of stuff is supposed to matter. It's just an excuse for ninjas and soldiers to flip out and kill shit.

I actually loved the bit about a modern special forces style units wrecking them when they managed to catch them out of their element.

The movie was advertised as nonstop ninja action, the fact that the plot would be about as thin as a paper door was basically a given.

I also find it hilarious that it has a higher fresh rating on rotten tomatoes than Twilight: New Moon does.

I thought this movie was pretty, awesome.

The only let down that kind of bugged be concerned the ninjas turning into those shadows when they snuck around. I was hoping to see some actually sneaking and serious stealth on their part, but that didn't happen.

Otherwise, it was fun.

I liked it, but I kept thinking the principal three characters (Raizo, his master, and his master's second in command) would make a good Jin, Heihachi, and Kazuya respectively in a Tekken movie.

The nicest thing I can say about it is that it's a shitty movie. That's the nicest thing I can say.

Me too. Bored me to tears and had to force myself to watch it till the end to see if at least it finishes in an interesting way. It doesn't. An hour and a half irrecoverably lost. And I won't even discuss the, for lack of a better phrase, "fighting scenes".

Ninja Assassin = Elektra Saga
I'd rather watch "Elektra" again. Not that I ever would, if you see what I mean.

We've missed the most important thing about this movie! The Return of Sho Kosugi!
He was awesome and still has the moves!

Yes it was pretty silly, but you cannot take ninja movies seriously! Also they really need to work on better CGI blood, there was something that wasn't right about it.

Jettison
12-10-2009, 10:08 AM
Except Desperado was actually good. This was worse than a movie based off a video game based off of an anime.....

I thought Jet Li's UNLEASHED, ONG BAK, and KUNG FU PANDA were good, recent martial arts films.....
Like I said before, this was 300 rip-off, with a bunch of stunt doubles whos fight scenes were masked in SO MUCH shadow, it was impossible to even enjoy the action. Try holding the camera still with some decent lighting, otherwise it just sounds like a fight scene.

I'm all for ninjas VS military.....sounds great! But they found a really effective way of ruining that.
