View Full Version : Choose The Lesser of Two Evils: Sage's Evolutionary Process, or Secondary Mutation

Both subjects have been talked about for as long as I can remember. And both have their drawbacks. Most people like yourselves don't care for either, but if you had to cope with a character... any character, that was given either or process, which would you rather have? Some secondary processes have been explained away, but that's not the point here.

The thing is, either mutation advancement would give off a different effect, be it furthering their mutation, or adding on to it.... But then you already knew that.

So, if you had to choose between either of the two processes (if Joe Q. put his foot down and mandated it...again), which would you prefer?

Well, those aren't really my only choices. I'd simply settle for "not secondary mutation".

Beast got a boost from Sage. Emma got a boost from Cassandra Nova (at least I believe that's what was said in Astonishing).

What other secondary mutations are there that haven't been explained away as something else?

Sage's power makes the most sense. Secondary mutation is too deus ex machina.

It's Sage's secondary mutation to jumpstart others.

it's her computer-like mind that allow her to see other people's genetic potential. let's all get on the same page here, people.

I liked Shortpack better before his existence was revealed.

that would hurt a lot if he was actually appearing anywhere. :shrugs:

that's one thing. jumpstarting that evolution is a whole 'nother kettle of fish. it's like Shortpack all of a sudden being able to psi-txt.

Secondary Mutation makes more sense to me. The X-Gene, after all, isn't locked in specificity. Just like someone's hair color can change as they mature, so too should power sets. The way I see it, a secondary mutation is just a latent...well...mutation and it makes sense to me that it wouldn't always coincide with the initial power set.

Plus, to those who say it's too dues ex machina (almost as over/misused a phrase as "irony"), how can you say that Sage's ability is anything but? She, quite literally, has the power to make people stronger like she's a goddamned Easy Button with tits. No thank you.

Couldn't I just use the Force or join the Dark Side? No?
Then I pick Sage because secondary mutation doesn't sound half as appealing as having Sage touch me. A little bit lower Sage. To the left.

I am quite specific in my use of deus ex machina, as I am with "irony." Who do you think you're talking (in the third person) to?

Secondary mutations are cool and I don't see anything wrong with it, especially if it could make someone have a less generic powerset when they're already a pretty good character.

I wouldn't want to see it on someone who's already too powerful though, like Storm or someone who has a shitload of powers as it is, like M.

I actually like the concept of secondary mutations. Sometimes they're stupid but they can be very interesting.

If the secondary mutation were to be a part of the original X-gene, how would you explain M-Day? What I'm referring to is Black Tom Cassidy. We have his original powers, which are to channel thermokinetic force blasts through non-conductive organic substances (See his wooden cane), and his secondary mutation to be a tree-like creature, which was removed by Wanda.

Though his Wood-like powers were implants in the 90s in that Deadpool series, when he returned in Uncanny X-men 409, it was revealed they came back as a secondary mutation. If both powers come from that one X-gene, how would that explain the loss of his secondary mutation?

If I were a writer, I would just retcon his having a secondary mutation and stick with the original origin of those particular powers. Then everything would be kosher.

But, since I'm not, I'll just chalk it up to the fact that Wanda's very particular when it comes to being a crazy Decimationating beeyotch. She probably thought Tree-Tom was ugly (like 99% of fans) and decided to fix his sorry ass.

lol

I don't know.

But I also don't think of anything caused by Decimation as being relevant to the science(fiction) of the X-Men mythos. Hell, even in the comics, the only explanation they've managed is "kaos majicks lulz". It's very anti-Darwinian and doesn't fit well with most things in the X-Verse, least of all being secondary mutations.

Morrison named secondary mutations, but they'd certainly existed previously. Wolverine has enhanced senses, enhanced strength and a healing ability. Nightcrawler can teleport, can stick to walls, and has a mutated appearance that makes him well-nigh invisible in shadows. Giving it a name and having it happen to a few more characters doesn't really bug me.

Sage's jumpstart power is a little eye roll worthy, but I don't hate it. Christine Trelane had the same power in Stormwatch and there, as here, it was used to further plot. It has a touch of deus ex machina, but that's fiction for ya.

Just for $#!+$ and giggles, I'd love to see the end result of Sage's tampering with all of the current 198+ mutants out there, and how each of them would cope with it....

I would love to see Sage make Emma in Diamond Form permentely and not telepathy to use at all.

P.S. Sage ripped Rogue off, not cool Sage not cool

P.S.S. Please keep Sage alway from Monet, her powers are screwy enough
