I'm hyped to death for Tron and feel fanny Adams for Avatar. I can attribute some of this down to my love for Tron (fat guys in glowing outfits aside) and my sheer lack of knowledge regarding Avatar, even the con footage hasn't made it to Youtube. The few pics I've seen are frankly un-inspiring and the 'amazing planetary vista's' are the kinds of things I've seen in Imagine Effects and other art sources, it may be moving on the big screen but it has been done before.

We've seen some working concept work from Tron and that's exciting and everyone is worked up.

This is not to say Avatar is going to be shit and Tron will be Gods gift to film but I know which I want to see more and it's mainly down to marketing.

I would like to know if anyone else is in the same or similar boat and does it apply to the way films are advertised across the board?

I think more people know about Tron Legacy from the footage. I haven't seen the first so I don't know much about it. I'm hyped for Avatar because it's the new James Cameron film but the general public don't seem to know it exists, Cameron really needs to get a trailer out there with his name all over it and get the hype going soon, isn't it out by the end of the year? I'd say most of Dark Knights money was down to the aggressive viral campaigns etc for like a year up to release.

Very true, Cameron may make great movies, but he's no good at marketing. I would love a trailer for this, or even a teaser but if I'm being honest my interest is muted by all the other stuff out there (Iron Man 2 and so on). T2, Titanic both had recognisable aspects to them that helped sell them, Abyss (a film I adore by the way) died on it's arse because...no one cared before hand.

The problem with marketing a film like Avatar is the thing is in 3-D and it needs a forum in which you can experience that. That's why the footage was released at comic con but can't be seen on You Tube. Besides, I'm sure security would comfiscate every recording device imaginable : ) When that footage screens in IMAX in a few weeks I think that's when the marketing machine will kick in.

has there been ANYTHING out there about Avatar besides talk?

Leaked concept art, some shots of the toys, a couple posters, and that's about it.

Quite frankly, Cameron talked himself into a corner claiming the movie will be a "game changer" and ended up giving us "Aliens (the design of the military hardware) meets Pocahantas (the basic narrative of the story) on one of those Star Wars Prequel Worlds (You can't tell me you don't see the resemblance), now in THREE DEE!"

When even the hyped-up SDCC crowd walks away from the early footage reveal saying it's not as amazing as they thought it'd be, you're definitely not living up to the hype.

To be fair, I don't think anyone that saw the comic-con footage is saying it was bad (and in fact most have given fairly favorable assessments), but pretty much all of them are saying that if this movie is the "game changer" Cameron claims it's supposed to be, it's certainly not showing up in the early footage. Basically the FX don't look to be beyond anything we've already seen before.

I've seen more video game footage for the PS3 game of Avatar than I have of the actual movie. Which is fine by me, I'd much rather look forward to riding on alien dragon bug things than be bored to tits by Shrek Meets Abe's Oddyssey.

Has there been any 3D on YouTube?
I don't think you can expect to see it there, even if someone posted it, I'm sure Cameron would have it down really fast.

Friends who saw it were as amazed as Cameron promised they would be, which has me really excited.

Avatar is probably going to be a disappointment no matter what because the expectations are way too high. The movie could end up being good but I doubt it's going to be this revolutionary experience that they hyping it to be.

I have to say Tron Legacy looks kind of cool. And I'm no fan of Tron.

I might be content with Avatar when it comes out because I'm fearing it will be a giant piece of junk. I had no idea Tron Legacy was in the works and remember nothing about the first film so, honestly ,both movies are pretty much blank slates for me.
