View Full Version : Dick's Batman costume: identical to Bruce's last one?

When that teaser image for BATTLE FOR THE COWL was first shown more than a year ago, the Batman costume given to Dick Grayson appeared to have some slight modifications from the last Batman costume design that Bruce Wayne had used up until the time of RIP/FINAL CRISIS. It wasn't a radical redesign, but the supposed "Grayson Batsuit" had a slightly different cutting on the ears, the cape, and the utility belt that clearly distinguished it from Bruce's Batsuit.

Since Dick has taken over as Batman, however, it appears that he's wearing the same model Batsuit that Bruce had been wearing up to FINAL CRISIS.

It's more or less the same, but Dick's belt and gloves are different.

Dick's costume is different in that it has the bat style belt buckle, and there are 2 glove scallops instead of 3.

It's just different artists taking liberties with the design. I notice Tony Daniel doesn't draw the gauntlet scallops as attached to two individual solid wrist bands. Over on Blackest Night: Batman's covers Adam Kubert is using the design he came up with, with the Nightwing symbol on the belt and two fabric looking gauntlet scallops. Phillip Tan also neglects to draw the detail on the wrist gauntlets, but uses the Quietly version's belt buckle and added the chin strap.

Bagely uses the Quietly version to a T, which is great since it's my favorite rendition of Dick-Bat.

Yes, there hasn't been a lot of consistency over the titles when it comes to Dick's new suit. Quitely's design in the lead book is the definitive one and i'd prefer others follow this as it seems a bit messy right now.

Completely agree. My favorite thing about Quitely's interpretation of Dick is that he draws him the way I would look as Batman: Slim but muscular, in a rumpled ill-fitting batsuit picked up off my bedroom floor just before heading out for the night.

Yes it's just the gloves and belt buckle. Though some artists seem to ignore it for some reason. Also, I believe that "preview" picture was revealed to be a bunch of cr@p.

I agree, I guess it was just confusing at the DC Office too. I remember when Adam Kubert's version with the Nightwing logo on the belt and the fabric scallops was being toted around. Then Mark Bagley said he didn't know if his take on Batman should reflect that version, I assume he checked and was told it should. Then Tony Daniel confirms that Frank's is the version the others should be taking their lead from but he chose to leave out the gauntlet detail.

It is kinda annoying.

Well as of the last issue of Batman Dick was still making changes to the suit. We all know it won't be a drastic change as we've seen but he's still working on it.

Yeah but that's Batman. Which is basically a sidebook at this point. Don't think we can look to it to dictate anything to the other books. And all the changes he mentioned were superficial really.

Kubert version (http://goodcomics.comicbookresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/dcoct7.jpg) Nightwing Belt Buckle and fabric scallops.

Phillip Tan Version (http://comicsmedia.ign.com/comics/image/article/100/1001946/first-look-at-philip-tans-batman-and-robin-20090708042904363_640w.jpg) Bat-symbol logo from Quietly version, with added chin guard and no gauntlet armor.

Tony Daniel (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_yWjfmSMdvSo/SlYEvpMtPHI/AAAAAAAAAjY/dDGAGt0Zq38/s1600-h/BMROB+Cv3+varsmll.jpg) Different Bat-buckle, completely different forearm scallops from every other version.

Quietly Version (http://gonzopunk.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/batman-and-robin-1-batman-4997770-594-9151.jpg) Bat-Symbol belt buckle. Scallops attached to separate pieces of gauntlet armor like Robins.

Bagely's version is identical to Quietly's. Ed Benes did a completely different version too. So did the artist on Booster Gold. JG Jones also neglected the gauntlet armor on the forearms, something only Quielty and Bags seem to be using.

I like Quietly's take most, followed by Tan's. The Quietly version is just the best blend of realistic and cool. The giant forearm scallops on the Daniel version look way too cumbersome. And the fabric ones on Kubert's look useless. The Quietly/Bags one look functional as protective and offensive and don't look too ungainly on a character who is supposed to be known for his acrobatics. Tans is cool but I miss the armor on the forearms, just looks more practical then a glove.

Daniel's Damian is awsome, though.

Ive got a bunch of black suits hanging in my cupboard and I wear one of them to work everyday, and, shock horror, they dont all look exactly the same!

I see no problem with a superhero character whearing slightly different clothing (belt buckles, gauntlets) day to day as long as the changes dont effect the functionality or general recognisability of the costume.

Kubert always gets costumes wrong. Whenever he did crossovers with other artists it seemed characters would just suddenly be wearing jeans and a t-shirt for his issue and then be back in costume when the next artists picked up the storyline in a different title.

Wait, wait, wait...

Those spikey bits on Batman's gloves/gauntlets are called scallops? Like the clams?

[runs to check dictionary]

scal·lop (skŏl'əp, skāl'- skä'ləp)
n.

1.
a. Any of various free-swimming marine mollusks of the family Pectinidae, having fan-shaped bivalve shells with a radiating fluted pattern.
b. The edible adductor muscle of this mollusk.
c. A shell of this mollusk, or a dish in a similar shape, used for baking and serving seafood.
2. One of a series of curved projections forming an ornamental border.
3. A thin boneless slice of meat.

Well, look at that. You really do learn something new everyday.

Personally, I really don't mind the minor changes and inconsistencies, because Bruce hasn't always been in the same exact costume either. It's not really all that important whether Batman has two or three scallops, as long as they maintain consistency within a single story (unless they show him changing for some reason). They can do whatever minor adjustments offpanel in between adventures as they like as far as I'm concerned. I've always been one for variety:biggrin:

Yeah, Quietly draws Dick the best but Daniel draws a great Damian.

They don't have to "get it straight" given that they've established an ongoing modification, customization and mission-tailoring process for the suit components.

Except they really didn't. All the changes mentioned in Batman were superficial like making the cowl eyes bigger or changing the cape. And well, the alterations present across all the variations are also superficial, mostly revolving around how the gauntlet scallops are drawn.

Count me among those who prefer a more consistent portrayal of the design Quietly came up with across the board.
