It seems there are the little odd people who don't like JH Williams art on Detective... I know its bizarre but they exist!
I just wanna get a feel of how many of these people are on these forums so vote away!

Also, they should've given Williams some work on Batman & Robin, no?

I voted "Yes!"

For those posters who are just now discovering J.H. Williams III on Detective Comics, you might not be aware that this is not the first time J.H. has worked in the Bat-Universe. You might also want to check out the following issues:

Batman #526 (Kelley Jones did the cover, but the interior art is all J.H.)

Batman #550 (The interior art was half Kelley Jones, half J.H.)

Legends of the Dark Knight #86-88

All of the above, while still very good, pales in comparison to the work he is currently doing on Detective. I would still recommend hunting these back issues down, though, they are worth it! Also, Batman #550 was a lead-in to the short lived Chase series (with art by J.H.), in which Batman made an appearance towards the end.

More recent Batman related work done by J.H. W. III was in 2007's Batman #667-669. This work is closer in style to what he is currently doing on Detective.

In the future, by all means, but I think his work on Detective is keeping him pretty busy right now. I'd say let him keep working on Batwoman long enough to really establish a feel for her, lay the groundwork for future artists to work from. Batman And Robin is doing very well as it is, and wouldn't benefit from his influence as greatly as this new character is. Oh, I voted yes by the way.

As strange and experimental as it can be sometimes, the artwork is simply gorgeous to me.

yes, I like it. kinda. but it does not move a story along very well as it's all bold, one picture/page type layout. I think sooner than later, people will get tired of it, b/c it will take so long to tell a simple story.

I actually can see where you're coming from with this. Personally, I'm loving williams art, but, I have noticed that whenever there was a page of smaller panels I tended to lose interest a bit. Big splash panel pages of his tend to hold interest for me, but when he has to do small panel to panel scenes it doesn't seem quite as gripping.

JH WIlliams is the man. Rucka really writes some snoozers though.

Was it really necessary to start out by insulting the people who disagree with you?

Also, they should've given Williams some work on Batman & Robin, no?

No. He can't even keep up on the Detective project, which he's presumably been working on for years.

I voted yes as I am a fan of the art in books. Even a great title with a great story could turn me away with bad art so bravo to him and all the good artist working on the bat titles

Oh my. That doesn't bode well.

He means exactly what he said. Unfortunately, Mr. Williams is a slow paced artist. He makes beautiful, beautiful work, but it takes a lot of time to create such intricately detailed scenes. I don't remember which issue it is, but I think it's somewhere around #6 or #7 when he'll be being temporarily replaced by another artist so that he can get caught up again?

i like the art a bit. its not my favorite style but its pretty unique and intruiging. usually im more into traditional comic book art but its nice.

honestly it doesnt seem that insulting to me. its generally been excepted that williams art has been well recieved. i think he is being honest and finding it not the norm for readers to dislike the art.

I agree with you completely. Trust me, I've seen 'insulting' on message boards and that ain't it.

In fact, the OP simply writes exactly what's going through my own mind - how could anyone look at this book and not think it's great artwork? It doesn't necessarily have to be their particular 'cup of tea' but I'd hope they'd have enough of an open mind to recognise it for the amazing artistry it is. If not, I'd have to wonder a little about what they consider 'good art'...

Hahah I wasn't insulting them. Just merely pointing out that I find them to be a superstitious and cow---....errr i mean peculiar bunch of lads who must have really high (exquisite?) tastes

Oh, THAT'S been announced since the beginning. The way Jim phrased it made it sound like JHW (who's only been working on it for a year when it was announced, btw) didn't know how fast he could work, and that he was falling behind schedule.

Actually, he has been working on it on and off for 2 and a half years, Rucka and Williams have both talked about it in interviews, and I've heard Greg talk about it many times in person. All of the design sketches and character designs by him that have popped up the last few months are dated 2007, and his designs for her were used in the Crime Bible mini series, which was produced in 2007. That being said, he has worked on other comics work during the past 2 and half years, but he and Rucka have been collaborating on this storyline for Batwoman since Pete Tomasi put them together, before he stepped down as editor in April 2007.

If people want to see insulting stop by the spidey board   though it is 200% more tame then it was 6-8 months ago

Yeah, pretty much. I got in a shitfight there with a couple of guys around 6 months ago and then just decided never to post anything even remotely controversial or negative ever again. Very thin skinned indeed.

But you're right, it's not quite as bad just at the moment.

Yes I know, it's hard to believe that people hold opinions contrary to your own. Amazing.

Anyway...No I don't like the artwork, I find it gross and macabre. I will wait to see if the book is collected in TPB to see if it is worth picking up.

It's not like anyone is denying the quality of is work. It's one thing to not personally enjoy it, it's another to try and pretend that he isn't, quite simply, the best artist working in the field right now... and these issues aren't even his current work, really.

I don't follow the "gross" statement, but that'd hardly be the first time I had no idea what Mia was talkng about...

Sort of like your opinion on Williams.

I'm really curious now Mia, what exactly about it is gross and macabre?
I'm trying to grasp if you mean what it displays or just the way it is displayed.

When I think of gross and macabre what pops into my mind is something like Invincible where the heroes and villains are having frequent knock down, drag out, bone shattering, blood splurting fights. That I find disgusting, and it's just too unpleasant for me to be willing to read it.

'Tec so far hasn't struck me that way at all. Actually I've found a lot of the scenes that could be pretty gruesome to seem almost tame. Most of the combat seems to come in the form of swift one-two hits (or sometimes just sink strikes) rather than long brutal pummelings that could lead to gruesome injury.

So, would you enlighten me on what you mean?

We don't all have the same taste in art. Most people love the art of Frank Quietly, I think his art is absolutely awful.
It's a matter of personal preference. A lot of us love Williams work, some folks don't.

Williams is producing the most beautiful looking comic art currently being published IMO. His work is stunning and perfectly compliments Rucka's story.

I love JH Williams art on Detective. As a new reader to the Bat titles it has really hooked me. I read all the other titles before Detective as my comic store was out of it. I was already enjoying the titles, but Detective just blew me away. It was different and fresh; this was all largely because of Williams art. Its unique and it makes me want more after every issue.
