This has to be one of the most powerful, heart rendering, and heart breaking account of the atomic bomb being dropped on Hiroshima. It is told from the prespetive of Gen, a boy living in World War 2 era Japan. We get the story from his point of view before, and after the bomb drops.
Anyone else here watch this movie, or read the manga?

How does it compare to Grave of the Fireflies?

It is a bit more brutal, and grittier that GOTF. It deals with Gen being involved with the auctal atomic blast then just being victim of a bombing raid.
Here is an example. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCHbF9lG3lE)

the first four books are absolutely awesome. I haven't had the chance to fully absorbe volumes 5 and after. but it's one of my all-time favorite comics.

Haven't seen it myself, but I heard something about children with their eyes melting out of their skulls.
So, I'm avoiding it on the same grounds as I'm avoiding Grave of the Fireflies: I strongly suspect I'm happier having not seen it.

Yeah, this will fuck up your day if you watch it.

I've read a couple of books of the manga.
It's incredibly depressing but very well written and the scariest part all true since the author was a real Hiroshima survivor.
But yeah, not the happiest of stories.

I watched the movies and they are some of the most powerful movies I've ever seen; anime or not.

I watched this in elementary school...which was over fifteen years ago, and I still remember it. Especially the part when Gen's mother passes away...a gut-wrenching masterpiece.
