The absence of Beast signals the moment when Matt Fraction became the most powerful of all the X-Writers. Everyone marches to his beat, now!
Armor is probably now going to team up with Pixie to stab Empath again <3

This is Charest's variant for Astonishing #31, previously seen on his blog.
For those who haven't heard of Charest, he's only one of the most revered and influential artists of the modern age (and one of the most notoriously slow as well).
As far as Marvel work, he did 4 pages (the framing story) in Ultimates Saga (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2267/2027433169_12a223758c_o.jpg), covers for Captain America: The Chosen (http://www.hillcity-comics.com/poster_misc/JUL072245.jpg), a Skaar cover (http://www.comicartcommunity.com/gallery/details.php?image_id=32528&sessionid=43e844f651858b8d47aef0522212fd32), an Invincible Iron Man variant (http://www.comicartcommunity.com/gallery/details.php?image_id=28125&sessionid=43e844f651858b8d47aef0522212fd32), a Magik cover (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_8WIrmVUn13Y/SaEr0uUXzXI/AAAAAAAAACs/DzDxC0ihoXI/s1600-h/Magik.jpg), and X-Men/Wildcats (http://www.travischarestgallery.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=image&id=78): The (http://www.comicartcommunity.com/gallery/details.php?image_id=25725) Golden (http://www.typingmonkeys.com/images/Wtravis01b.jpg)Age in 1997. Outside of Marvel he did Wildcats (http://www.comicartcommunity.com/gallery/details.php?image_id=26020)for Wildstorm back in the 90's, and Metabarons (http://www.travischarestgallery.com/images/CharestSDCCMetabaronsPrint1.jpg) for Humanoids (http://img50.imageshack.us/img50/5480/dreamshifters035bs.jpg) in Europe, among a smattering of other things, including random Marvel commissions, like this Weapon X (http://www.comicartcommunity.com/gallery/details.php?image_id=21608) one.

They're really stretching their roster out now across the books. It really is the same couple people in just about every book. And its not just Cyclops and Wolverine. If this is indeed the new roster, then that would make this Angel's 3rd book he appears in somewhat regularly.
Of course, Utopia and/or Nation X could still end up changing things for Uncanny.

It's Angel. The way you would be able to tell if it's Mimic is the hands and feet would be overly large.
That's what I would have thought in the old days, but his appearances in Utopia have shown him with normal-sized hands and feet and without Beast's added bulk.
It's still almost certainly Angel, but the curve of the costume almost makes me wonder if that's the "M" on Mimic's front curving to meet the one on his back. But probably not.

Armor and Beast are gone... Didn't Fraction say on his twitter that he wrote a funeral scene for the end of Utopia?
The former artist made sketches of redesign costumes for Angel, Colossus, Nightcrawler and Dazzler besides the sketches for the team used last arc.
Seen the first 3 on this cover must mean that Ellis is going to use Dazzler at some point.

People are complaining that Warren is overexposed? Strange... he was in limbo for at least 2 years or so when Reload came around. He hasn't done much in a long time. This is his moment to shine!
I don't like that the same characters appear EVERYWHERE, but at the same time, this team makes sense. These are the X-MEN. Definitely the characters one would think of when they thought of definitive X-Men.
Perhaps the only others that come close to their level of fame are Psylocke, Gambit, Rogue, Iceman, Beast, Shadowcat, Jean Grey. I like this group for Astonishing, but hopefully Uncanny becomes a bit more specific with cast choices.
I could see Uncanny excelling with a smaller cast of Northstar, Domino, Dazzler, Iceman, Karma, Psylocke, Beast... it might even be better off without Cyclops and Emma.

No one was complaining. I just thought it was kinda weird to have a few characters in 3 books, Angel being one of them.
Of course, it was just an observation. Its also could be a sign that Uncanny shakes up like we've been told it might, and most of its cast gets shifted to Astonishing. Or, it could just be a cover.

I agree. This team lineup has defitine all-star power for sure. Marvel should use Ashtonishing to attract new readers since these are the characters that people will recognise when looking at the cover. But seeing as how Ashtonishing comes out next to never, it screws up the potential to get more sales, imo. Hopefully with an artist change, this book will actually come out on time.

I'm no Phil Jimenez art fan, but if this cover depicts the roster for his Astonishing run( I highly doubt it's the actual roster though), I'll buy it anyway. I can tolerate Phil's generic art style for the roster on the Charest cover.
Given that the regular cover has another cast, this is probably just Charest showing how he writes several iconic X-Men. I'd read a book with that cast though.
It also shows Storm and Wolverine really need new costumes.

Final word: Angel, Nightcrawler, and Colossus are dull additions to a team with limited amounts of interesting. What about Dazzler, Psylocke, Northstar, Husk, somebody I haven't seen a crapload of?

You're crazy!
His art is beautiful. It's like Coipel mixed with McNiven.
Love it!

Strategically, that team (if they were ever brought together) is quite sound...you've got:
2 Flyers...Storm and Angel (long-range and plenty powerful/deadly)
1 Telepath...Emma (plus her Diamond form)
1 Strategist...Scott
1 Teleporter...Nightcrawler (his swashbuckling is always a plus...8-))
1 Muscle/Power-house...Colossus
1 H2H Brawler...Wolverine (with enhanced senses)
plus Logan, Kurt and Peter have always worked very well together.
...this is pretty close to my dream team if ever I had one.

If they added Kitty and lost Emma and added Rogue, this would be a very good team for me.

Creaky, how do you feel about Ellis writing Nightcrawler again?
I don't think it's going to happen. But given what I've seen of Ellis' Astonishing work, I'm not sure I want him to, either. I was bummed that Kurt wasn't included in Whedon's Astonishing, because Kurt could have used that kind of character work, but this Astonishing is just...bleh.
I'd be curious to see how he would treat him, though, if not for that.

Also, remember the last time Kurt got dragged into a space/sci-fi related arc. He beat up a few Shi'Ar red shirts, sat on a chair and had f****n WARPATH steal his part of the show. :frown:

I'd love to see how Whedon would have handled Kurt. They should have gotten rid of Emma. LOL. I'm so Anti-Auntie Emma, it's sad. She used to be a favorite of mine in Gen. X.

I know it might not mean much, but is that blood on Logan's claws? I have no problems with it I just wouldn't expect on a cover that is not X-Force. Also Nightcrawler's face does seem a bit off. Its kind of like how some artists depict Beast's current form.

Whedon wrote this strange one-shot, once, about the ANAD X-men around the time they were formed, having it out in the Danger Room, and IIRC, he depicted Kurt as a total coward who was willing to kill Storm to save his own hide. Meanwhile, Logan was walking around being Mr.Cigar Man...it was just strange and bad and horrible.
So chances are, he would just have sacrificed Kurt's character on the Kitty altar. But then, Bru went from writing the Worst Nightcrawler Ever to possibly the Best Nightcrawler Ever, so I don't know!

I don't mind Kurt's face on the cover. Some artists like to go overboard with the demonic looks for him (while others make him way too pretty). As long as it doesn't become a permanent fixture, I can even like it.
And regarding Logan's claws...has he really not had bloody claws on other covers than X-Force's??

Speaking of Logan's claws, I like how straight they are. I don't like how some artists make them too curvy (not that I mind them being kinda curvy), but I do like the straightness of his claws in that pic.

Don't U feel bad, Emma bought this hatred on herself. Being Norman's bitch, cheating against Lady Mastermind, Calling Dazzler "Ally", Trying to outdo Monet...yeah Emma is made to be hated

I loved Whedons Emma, can't say the same about Fractions, but maybe things will change after Utopia.

Any comic book fan worth his salt knows that Cyclops has a force beam, and not a laser. No heat at all. I'm ashamed of you Fatguy!
of course it is a force beam... but the friction of the force of his beam against peter's peter heats it up and makes it more malleable. like rope burn on your penis, expect optic penis burn.

Stop deluding yourselves. It's not Mimic.
Okay, that's good to know that it's an alternate title. I remember Jiminiez said he enjoyed the chance to draw Beast, so McCoy must be hanging around for a little while at least.
