Not metal, or metalcore, or death metal. Hardcore.
Stuff like : Converge, Botch, Pageninetynine, Sawtooth Grin, Storm of Light, Cave In, Neurosis, Integrity or any other bands like that?
Heard anything good lately or been to any shows? Lots of good stuff coming out soon too.
Discuss!!

No, but I am a fan of Black Flag, Minor Threat, the Misfits (Danzig version only), Husker Du, and Fugazi.
(Though I looked up the bands you mentioned on All Music and many of them sound quite metal, at least to my ears. Generation gap in 5, 4, 3...)

I dunno. When I saw the thread I went "oh, sweet! I love Minor Threat!"
I've also started listening to Bikini Kill. They are intense.

That's funny; I thought they were pretty extreme when I first heard them, ten years ago. But now they just sound like basic punk to me. Certainly not hardcore.

I was thinking more along the lines of Poison Idea, Born Against or Sick of it All (yuck). Generation gap indeed! LOL!
Some my friends liked a fair bit of "hardcore" or hardcore punk, I guess, but I couldn't get in to much of it.
Bikini Kill were pretty good but not hardcore and not even that intense, IMO.

I don't necessarily think "Generation Gap"... I'm not that young. But yeah, Black Flad, Cro-Mags, Minor Threat, all that stuff is great too... i was basically starting off with the newer stuff i've been listening to more of latley.
Converge, Botch, Cave In, etc... Have Metal influence, mostly Slayer, but it's definatly more of a Hardcore vibe or whatever you want to call it.
I'd suggest you check it out if you ever had a minute, and i'm about to check out Bikini Kill, for sure.

Not really. There's a few bands that fit that description that I like LEs Savy Fav, Fugazi, Black Flag or Fucked Up but I'm not a huge fan. Lot of that stuff starts to sound the same after a while.

I see a lot of Les Savy Fav and Fugazi comparisons, but, as a huuuuuuge fan of both, I don't see it. Fugazi never entered into the dancier stuff like later Les Savy Fav, nor was early Les Savy Fav as dub oriented as Fugazi.
I saw Fucked Up a couple weeks ago for free. While the lead singer put on a show, their music was kind of boring. I'll have to give them another shot, though.
As for the Bikini Kill thing, sure they might not have the blistering speeds as Minor Threat or the anger of Black Flag, but I could see almost anything off of "Pussy Whipped" to be categorized with the two.

Fucked Up hasnt came to the south yet, really, which sucks, but they are amazing on record.

At East River Park in Williamsburg? I was there. I had fun but like most hard core shows it gets a little old after a couple songs.
I wasn't really comparing Fugazi and Les Savy Fav. I just said they are hard core bands (sort of ) that I like. Though I have to say I prefer the more melodic Les Savy Fav stuff.

Fun show, wasn't it? I went mainly to see Jemina Pearl in all her punk rock cuteness.
I see a lot of comparisons between the Les Savy Fav and Fugazi in LSF reviews, mostly.

i heart pg99!
'in love with an apparition' is one of the best songs with clapping ever.. haha
im a bigger fan of city of caterpillar though (some of the same people).
pygmy lush is also absolutely amazing- again, same people, but all acoustic (i know the topic is hardcore.. im just sayin' :p).
kodan armada.
an albatross.
the plot to blow up the eiffel tower. saw them open for blood brothers once :)
circle takes the square.
i listen to most bands that Justin Pearson is in (swing kids, the locust, some girls, holy molar, head wound city, etc.)
always excited to meet people that have actually heard of these bands, its a rarity... haha

plot- 'dissertion, honey' almost has more of a jazzy feel to it at times (as much as hardcore/punkish can have) some songs have saxophone (though any sax player would probably cover their ears in horror), also has more of a DIY energy/ sound behind it. some tracks are spoken-word (female guest vocalist) over-piano-kind-of-deals. live youtube video of 'sometimes i wish i'd lost a leg' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqI07ofl1lc) from this album.
'love in the fascist brothel' has more of a punk feel to it. fuller sound/ higher production values. less saxophone (and no spoken word/ piano combo). 'exile on vain street' over random WW2 footage (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6T362m-LdiA)
i havent gotten ahold of 'inri' so i cant say anything about it (other than the title track is 1 of 2 songs on their myspace).
'if you cut us, we bleed' has been referred to as their worst by other people i know that listen to them.. i suppose i would have to agree, but i still like it.
albatross- myspace (http://www.myspace.com/analbatross23) they tend to have random interludes between songs (see 'uncle funky pants').
songs average in at about 0:40 to 1:00 long. i have the albums 'eat lightning shit thunder,' 'we are the lazer viking,' and 'Blessphemy (Of The Peace-Beast Feastgiver And The Bear-Warp Kumite),' and have been disappointed by none of them. thunder & lazer are pretty similar, and you can listen to both albums back to back in less than 20 minutes. Blessphemy upps production values a bit, doubles the number of tracks, and comes in at 27 minutes. they recently put a new one out, but i havent been able to track it down...
if i had to recommend one album by each, i'd probably go with blessphemy for albatross, and i guess fascist for plot- it gives a better sense of their energy.
tried to give a few links to listen to them before you buy (or download :p), so you'd know what you're getting into :)

I enjoy the occasional Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Bikini Kill (does that even count now?), Ramones (same question as Bikini Kill), Wasted Youth, Reagan Youth, Stormtroopers of Death, the Young and the Useless, and Beastie Boys (Pollywog Stew EP & Aglio E Olio) hardcore songs from time to time.
Does that count?

I don't care much for pg. 99 or City of the Caterpillar but I've seen them both, living in VA.
I did like Action Patrol though, back in like 1990whatever.
I used to like hardcore, but have since really grown out of it. The only stuff I still like is the crossover stuff...the metal-er albums from Cro-Mags, Gang Green, Leeway, etc.
I also used to be in a hardcore band called Brass Knuckles. So tough. Ha.
I still, in theory, like bands like MT, SOA, BF, and all the other early dischord stuff, but I don't actually ever listen to it anymore...so...doesn't really count, anymore.

I do, we did a demo, which I can send you a burn of, if you want. If you PM me your mailing address, I'll send you one.
I'm not vouching for the musical quality though. Heh.
Other guys from my band went on to do things you might be familiar with. One of the guitar players was also in Dead Serious, Murder Weapon, and Scarlet. The guy that played bass was also in Down to Nothing at the time, but is no longer. And the guy that played drums currently plays for Bracewar, I think, but was also in Murder Weapon and Dead Serious as well. Plus a few others.

Don't know aany real hardcore bands these days, but back in the day my 2 favorites were British hardcore punk bands G.B.H. & The Exploited. "City Baby Attacked by Rats" by GBH & "Horror Epics" by The Exploited are still played in my house today.
I'm sure I could come up with more from the 80's but those 2 bands are my faves.

I love hardcore, but its seems to be a very broad term based on most of these replies... Even the original post specifies "not metalcore" and then lists CONVERGE, CAVE IN and the like (always thought that was "metalcore"?)
Anyway- G-ANX, SOA, INFEST, UNITED MUTATION, NEGATIVE FX, EXTORTION, COLD WAR... All great hardcore bands. I also love grind and powerviolence type stuff.

i do love me some good grind every now and then...
not every day, but it has a place in my heart that no other genre can fill haha.
Bodies in the Gears of the Apparatus is probably my favorite, but also Fuck... I'm Dead, Pig Destroyer, Leng Tch'e, etc.
also a band coming to mind now which i completely overlooked (and feel stupid about because i've seen them live) is Melt Banana. i love playing them for people and watching their reactions when vocals come in...
