And how are we coming along on that Oliver Stone/Muppets movie, while were at it

While I'm glad Blizzard is finally getting on with making the Warcraft movie it talked about back when Frozen Throne was its newest game, I hope Sam Raimi can make it work. He's good with action and concepts, but I've never liked how he handles human drama.

Last I heard, the film was supposed to be about King Varien Wrynn's betrayal at the hands of his own people (and Onyxia) and the debut of the forsaken, set after TFT and just before the launch of WoW. And it's supposedly very human/Alliance centric.

So... We're looking at a medieval zombie action film with a take no guff king who has a chin the size of Bruce Campbell's.

Here's predicting Scarlett Johansen as Jaina (or maybe Sylvanas) and Ron Perlman or Ving Rames as Thrall.

But the main thrust of the film will probably be Varien vs. Sylvanas with the Scarlet Crusade factoring in. And then setting up Varien's exile for a sequel likely based on Walt Simonson's comic but with a bigger focus on Thrall and Arthas so they can make it a blowout trilogy that ends with Garrosh and Varien duking it out in a humans vs. orcs throwdown, with Thrall and Jaina playing Romeo and Juliet.

And my gut feeling says that the Horde will turn its back on Thrall in the impending story developments in-game, leaving Thrall AND Jaina both as outcasts, with the Alliance and Horde burning for eachother's blood... And probably culminating in some kind of crazy team-up that pits Thrall and Varien against all of Azeroth in a warped buddy action comedy.

And Sam Raimi... excellent. I'll never complain about a director with a solid sense of adventure and fun.

Glad to see Raimi has joined the I Suck Satan's Cock club, right behind David Fincher and Ridley Scott.

Here's what I thought would have made sense when I played WoW, after playing through Warcraft III and TFT and learning the story:

-Orcs and humans continue to live in peace, at least the orcs and humans on Kalimdor so long as Jaina is still in charge of Theramore.

-The orcs do NOT cut down trees in Ashenvale, since that's what got their future allies the night elves to turn on them in the first place. Plus, when they first did it they thought "Well, I don't see any signs saying NOT to cut them down." But after finding out that it was somebody else's territory they had to know that further deforestation was a slap in the face to the nelves and that they'd probably respond by getting violent. It's really hard to imagine somebody as reasonable as Thrall either condoning this or looking the other way while it happened.

-Thrall and Cairne do NOT ally with the Forsaken, because orcs and tauren care about honour, and since Sylvanas pretty much stole Lordaeron and stabbed her human allies in the back she has none. And if it weren't clear before, it should've been clear once they visited the Undercity and saw how human prisoners were treated

Somebody told me that in beta there wasn't a Horde/Alliance war, but then somebody (or somebodies) said "Hey, where's the PVP?" So Blizzard decided to create a "Cold War" situation by having everybody acting stupid and killing one another when they really had no reason to and when they already had enough common enemies. Even if a lot of humans didn't like orcs after the events of the Orc campaign in TFT, the night elves still should have gotten along with them, since both races are all about respecting nature and shit to varying degrees, and since the night elves and tauren already see eye to eye on most things.

The Xena guy? lol.

Created by John Schulian, Robert Tapert, R. J. Stewart
Executive producer(s) Robert Tapert, Sam Raimi

I will never understand why all of a sudden Sam Raimi is credited for Hercules/Xena now, when he didn't really have much to do with it at all. I'm assuming its because of his post Spider-Man mainstream success his name is more recognizable. I even read an article where it lists Lucy Lawless as his wife (she is Rob Tapert's wife).

And Xena really isn't as cheesy as people make it out to be...

In what way would that not make perfect sense?

And, keep in mind, he's the Army of Darkness guy.

I would pay good money to see a Natural Born Killers remake starring Gonzo and Camilla.

King Wrynn was even given a chin larger than any other human in the game.

Basically, he's a brilliant tactician and loves the glory of personal combat but is prone to extreme rage. Noted for having escaped slavery. Not quite as witty as Campbell but he had a bit more edge and grit than any of the nobles in WoW, partly because corrupt nobles among his own people kidnapped him. He escaped with amnesia and became a gladiator slave to the Orcs, who killed his father. His wife was killed by rioting masons after the nobles refused to pay them. And he was raised among the more rugged (and racist) people of Lordaeron even though he's king of the aristocratic and more gentile kingdom of Stormwind.

So, basically, imagine a typical Disney Kingdom. Now cross George W. Bush with Wolverine, amp up the bloodlust, and make him the king, surrounded by rich nobles and happy peasants. His kingdom is traditionally very political and crafty and diplomatic but keeps getting itself screwed up by corrupt wealthy individuals or incursions from the other side (The Horde) which is led by a peaceful Orc named Thrall who often fails to check the aggression of his people.

I think Varien is probably a good role for Campbell. Varien needs to be over-the-top and grizzled, both more capable than most people with cooler heads and also a reactionary asshole.

As far as the story goes, Blizzard is VERY big on cross-genre continuity. The novels and comics are canon and will often either flesh out quest lines from the game or quest lines and characters from the games (including Varien) will debut in other media and then pop up in the game.

So the movie will likely be canon with the game lore and will introduce subplots or characters who will be reflected in the game and reference the events of the film.

Did you see "Drag Me To Hell"?

No, did he have a cameo in that one?

Bare in mind though non-bruce Raimi films are exceedingly rare, and before you bring up the Quick and the Dead, he was in it as a favor for Raimi, he was just cut out of the movie.

Yes, but despite that Lucy Lawless is a great actress.

...which is led by a peaceful Orc named Thrall who often fails to check the aggression of his people.

That's putting it mildly. In addition to the other stuff, it's difficult to believe that Thrall, who was enslaved from childhood (hence his name) and forced to fight as a gladiator before finally escaping, would ever allow slavery in the Horde. That's something I found very difficult to swallow when I was reading the comic book.

Again, it seems like lazy writing.

"Hey, we need Varian to really hate the Horde so that there will be more Horde/Alliance tension. He just needs a reason."

"How about some orcs capture him on the beach of Durotar, blatantly lead him into Orgrimmar as a slave with Thrall somehow not knowing about it? Oh, and we'll also show slaving operations going on in Thunder Bluff and have the guy who enslaved Varian be BFF with the Arch Druid of the tauren?"

"What the fuck? How could Thrall not know about it if they march slaves right through the front gates like that? And wouldn't the tauren be against it too, particularly the druid guy? That's a stupid idea and..."

"No it isn't, it's a great idea. They'll love it, and they'll fire you for not loving it after I pitch it and tell them you didn't love it."

And wouldn't you know it, that's exactly what happened!

Haha, seems pretty cheesy to me.

Its not as cheesy as Hercules, that's for sure. But no, I think its exaggerated. The thing about it is that its inconsistent. You'll have a campy episode for fun, and then the very next one will be full of angst.

That's a terrifying visual. Bravo.

Seriously, though... who's thinking Warcraft isn't cheesy? We're talking about a game that lets you click on characters who are sleeping and they exclaim, "I'm not that kind of orc!" It's not like it's Lord of the Rings or Chronicles of Narnia, to be sure.

Just be glad Uwe Boll didn't get the gig.
