Author and translator Frederik L. Schodt, the man who translated Osamu Tezuka's Astroboy manga for Dark Horse and author ofThe Astro Boy Essay, Manga Manga: The World Of Japanese Comic Books and Native American In The Land Of The Shogun was honored by the Japanese government last month with the Order of the Rising Sun for his work in bringing Japanese popular culture to the English speaking world. This is certainly a much deserved accolade.

The full statement on the contribution of Fred's work can be found here (http://www.sf.us.emb-japan.go.jp/pdf/a_Schodt_en.pdf).

The ceremony was held in San Fransisco on July 26 at the Official Residence of the Japanese Consul General, Mr. Yasumasa Nagamine. The award is given on behalf of the Japanese government, and signed by the Prime Minister and emperor.

A couple of the attendees have shared their experience online. Check out Same Hat! (http://samehat.blogspot.com/2009/07/fred-schodt-award-reception-with-gold.html) for Jared Cook's report, complete with info on the award and pictures. Then take a look at The Bittermelon (http://www.thebittermelon.org/2009/07/02/order-of-the-rising-sun-with-gold-ray-rosette/) for Jenn Yin's coverage, which contains a video of Tezuka Production's president Takayuki Matsutani singing the Japanese Astro Boy theme song.

Schodt himself has uploaded the text he wrote for his acceptance speech. It's a great read so check it out here (http://www.jai2.com/MedalSpeech09.html).

His other translations include Tezuka's Phoenix and Keiji Nakazawa semi-auto-biographical manga Barefoot Gen.

Major congratulations go out to Mr. Schodt for earning such a prestigious award.
