I've been hearing a lot of good things about the Jonah Hex book and was thinking about trying it out. The question I have is how graphic is the content as far as violence, language, and sexual situations? I know it's not a Vertigo book, but I just thought I'd ask.

Did you ever see the movie Psycho? The original by Alfred Hitchcock? In the infamous shower scene, you never actually see any contact between the knife and the victim's body. But Hitchcock creates the illusion that you are seeing each stab by deftly switching back and forth between the knife and the flesh, then finally showing blood swirling down the drain.
Jonah Hex is sort of like that. There is a great deal of violence, but usually the effects of the violence are not displayed in blatant gruesomeness, more implied. There is some sex, but no nudity, with the artist generally skipping over the actual act. You know, show them starting to take off clothes, maybe bad lighting conditions or furniture obscuring the nudity, and then maybe showing people lying in bed together afterwards. As for the language, I'm drawing a blank. It might be the usual comic book style #$@&*%@ variety of swearing, or maybe there are some common basic swear words like shit in usage. I don't remember because that stuff doesn't really get a reaction from me anymore.
Some other things worth knowing about the current Jonah Hex series:
1. Palmiotti and Gray have written every issue, and they have been doing a very good job. Lots of action, mixed in with some interesting moral and ethical questions that are not easy to answer.
2. Usually a different artist on every issue. Some are great, but even the not so great artists bring a vivid roughness to the page that works great for this comic.
3. Most stories last just one issue, so it's very easy to start with any given issue.

I have been reading Mr J Hex for over twenty years and its easily the best series yet of him, very easy too get into and is a very dark, without the stories ever suffering for it......................
Very underrated series.............

It is plenty violent. Not always in an extremely graphic way, but it can be down right gruesome and brutal. You rarely see an issue where Hex doesn't put one between someones eyes. The content and themes can be pretty intense. A lot of uh, "mistreatment" befalls females in the series, along lines of prostitution or forced advances. There is a bit of mutilation here and there as well.
It's the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly without the first two. It's just ugly, like Hex. Some of the art teams that pass through are able to add in lighter moments with caper stories, but usually its grim and dirty. For a fictional tale, it has that kind of realism that only something really based in reality captures in memory for how the Old West was.
For beginners you can really start anywhere. Each of the issues is pretty stand alone save for a small 2 -3 parter here and there. There are recurring personalities that pop in from time to time. I didn't really think i would like a western, but it's a good solid read. Not for the faint of heart though, but no where approaching the scale of some previous vertigo titles (for comparing what you may have read before for bearing).

Its not graphic or violent at all if you dont expect more than the gritty westerns where they shoot down alot of bad guys per film.
Its a westerns the shooting is expected. Its dark ala Unforgiven.

I think everyone has hit it right on the head: Jonah Hex is more suggestive of graphic violence than actually graphically violent. It's handled very well, in my opinion. There is no graphic sexuality, although the story of Tallulah Black is extremely suggestive in its description of sexual violence done to her and there are occasionally Old West prostitutes in some stories.
That said, the book is very grim in its tone as befits the subject matter. It is really is a fantastic book, and I highly recommend it.

There was also the issue with that couple who drugged Hex so he could father their child.

Like others have said, its more suggestive then it is showing the violence. Its a great series. You should try it.
