View Full Version : Blue Beetle. Is there anyone that knows him?
What's up Dc folks!
Last night I bought some early Teen Titans issues.I wasn't that interested cause well,....not really interested in young heroes sort of thing.
But one character struck me is that BLUE BEETLE.He seems to be a pretty witty character in the comic.
That's not what I am trying to say though,I remembered reading some old comics in the attic called Blue beetle too.
It's about and archeologist that found a Scarab that gave him power/suit.I am pretty sure this is the same one.
Does anybody knows this character's biography or involvements in DC universe?
What's his power?Did he play a major role?If so,which comic?
People seems to dismiss him as "a new character Dc created or "meh, just a noobie superhero" when I posted this question non-comic related forum.
If you know anything about his solo comics, bio, his power and abilities, involvements in DC universe please post here.Greatly appreciated.
He seems to be a teenager with witty mouth and a stock jokes to other heroes in Teen Titans. Not sure if this is the Blue Beetle I know......

The old Blue Beetle was Ted Kord, this new one is Jaime Reyes. He had his own ongoing for a couple years and he has a kind of a cult following.

Thanks for the response.Didn't know that there are other people who see this character interesting.
However,I would like to know more about him.
Those comics that I mentioned was probably old Blue Beetle comics in the 80's.
I just googled about the comics and the value of it today..........something around 10$......
Chances are my mom already sold them when I moved out.......dammit...
I was always wondering though what his power are....his suit seems to give him super strength and power flight. Not sure if there's anything more.Wikipedia aren't really helpful in this.
Is there a solo comic of his?(apart from the old 80's comic)Does he appear in JLA?or something like Infinite Crisis?I have to ask since I know little about Dc universe heroes.
This is another impossible question. Is there any fansite, website, forum or anything in the net that features him????

There's been 3 different Blue Beetles since the 1940's. Dan Garret was the Golden Age Beetle he was pretty awesome. Ted the 2nd Blue Beetle was decent too, last time I read about him he was getting stomped on by Doomsday. Ted did appear in JLA at the time. I know nothing about Jaime and I care not too.

Jaime Reyes's Blue Beetle run was fantastic. The beginning of the run (at least) is available in trades. It was a great little book. It's too bad it didn't get the following it deserved. It was nice for not every hero to be the stock white boy from the midwest.

Jaime Reyes is .. a high schooler with 2 awesome buddies Brenda and Paco, Lives at hiome with his parents and little sister (Mother a Nurse (or doctor) and Father a Mechanic with a bum leg, sister is in gradeschool)
He is currently dating Traci Thirteen, shes a witch that used to run around in just her panties under the alias "Girl 13".. shes more mature now.
Ohh and His family and closest friends know he is the Blue beetle
His powers is plot driven.. what ever he needs he has.. the Scarab is a sentiant being that can manipulate .. his body essentially and create any kind of weapon and stuff.. the Scarab is from an alien race called the Reach, The Reach once fought the Green Lantern Corps to a stand still.. and that kinda gives an indication of Jaimes power..
Jaime played a major role in Infinite Crisis.. it was a small part but still important, it was also the story that introduced him.
Classic Moment from the series

Dan Garret was the archeologist guy. I haven’t read much with him but he seems like just another generic hero type
Ted Kord was an inventor with no powers. He was one of the stars of the greatest comic DC ever published (JLI) but he was recently killed off in one of the worst comics DC published (Countdown to Infinite Crisis is only marginally better than Identity Crisis). Nite Owl from Watchmen is based on him.
Jamie Reyes is a kid that gets his powers from Dan’s scarab (though somehow his powers are different). A lot of the initial hostility toward the character stems from the fact that Ted Kord was a fan-favorite that was killed to make room for him. Plus there’s the matter of DC’s hamfisted attempts at “diversity” wherein they killed/replaced longstanding characters like the Question, Blue Beetle, the Atom, and Firestorm with minority characters (the new Question being the only character that wasn’t created just to replace her predecessor) within a few years of each other. Still, I’ve heard a lot of good things about Jamie’s (recently cancelled) series and he’s become a pretty big fan-favorite in his own right.

You forgot that Ray Palmer was gone for 2 year before Ryan Choi showed up.. and They are but running around now..
And Renee taking over as The Question was a long build up
Firestorm... yeah... .. that one was just lame.. Jason even showed up as Firestorm before Ronnie was killed
Also why the Scarab reacted differently to Dan and Jaime is explained in story

The New blue beetle is getting plenty of exposure in DC comics these days. he is starring in the Tv show the brave and the bold a lot. He was in at least 4 episodes so far. He is also in this week's brave and the bold comic, He is also in the kids version of batman and the brave and the bold comic book.
And He has his own 8 page back up in booster gold every month which is pretty good.

The first issue with Jaime and the Teen Titans is TT 50 (which is a crossover with an issue of an issue of Blue Beetle; the one where they fight Lobo), and is also involved in the Titans of Tomorrow arc that continues from that.
Jaime basically appears in Team Titans every issue after that, but isn't a member of the team until issue 60 or so. This gets especially funny when it gets to the point where there are three official Teen Titans members and Blue Beetle, and he still hasn't been made an official member.
Also, Jaime's been used well in the Batman: Brave and tthe Bold TV series, although that hasn't featured much of his supporting cast other than Paco. He also appears in issue two of the comic tie-in to that series (as does his family.)

Ever since Blue Beetle started as a back-up feature in Booster Gold, I've wanted Booster to start being the back-up feature.

The most recent Blue Beetle series starring Jaime Reyes has been reprinted in 5 trades:
Vol. 1: Shellshocked
Vol. 2: Road Trip
Vol. 3: Reach For the Stars
Vol. 4: End Game
Vol. 5: Boundaries
Definitely worth reading and pretty widely available. The series starts slow but things really take off with vol. 2

I was talking more about the perception than the reality.
I thought the All New Atom series was great until Gail Simone left and the new writer retconed everything before the series got canceled. I like Ryan much more than I liked Ray.
Ted Kord is one of my favorite characters ever so I was understandably ticked when he died (especially under such moronic circumstances). Still, Jamie seems likable enough.
The entire Question subplot in 52 was way too rushed to work. Renee was interesting in Gotham Central but she’s no Question. Vic Sage is the Question. End of story.
I can’t say I ever really cared for either Firestorm (I have a handful of issues of the Jason series for the ChrisCross art and the McDuffie writing but that’s it) but that doesn’t make Ronnie’s death by stabbing in Identity Crisis any less ridiculous.
Can you post about the comic series that you just mentioned?I cant seem to find it/search it.The only Blue beetle comic I found was the 1st Blue beetle.
Which one? Justice League International? Identity Crisis? Countdown to Infinite Crisis*? Watchman? The most recent volume of Blue Beetle?
*Not to be confused with Infinite Crisis (which CtIC lead into after detouring through a bunch of minis) and Countdown (which happened years later).

It's wierd. I actually think sturges back up tales are better than some of giffen's bb first few stories after infinite crisis.
