This book is fantastic, but I have one question: What was Batman talking about when he mentioned staging Superman's "defeat"?

Read the Justice League: New Frontier one-shot from last year . The main story there reveals the details behind that. There are also two back-ups: one drawn by Dave Bullock teaming up Robin & Kid Flash, and the other a Wonder Woman/Black Canary pairing-- drawn by J. Bone-- sending up Playboy.

I believe it refers to the battle described in the newspaper article that appears early in the New Frontier first volume (can't give you a page number because there aren't any). There's a paragraph and accompanying full-page photo which deal with Superman's attempt to bring Batman in. According to the article Batman defeats Superman using an identified chemical explosive that is clearly meant to suggest a kryptonite weapon to the reader (of the comic, not the article). Apparently this was staged so the government would not wonder why Superman hadn't yet been able to apprehend Batman.

I didn't know about the JL one-shot...it's a TPB?

Justice League: The New Frontier was a one-shot released around the time of the animated movie adaption came out. It's well worth picking up if you can find a copy.

Also, Darwyn Cooke's issue of Solo is also amazing and contains a New Frontier story starring King Faraday in 1950s Cuba, The Question, Catwoman, Black Canary, Slam Bradley and much more.
