View Full Version : I'm bored by the DCU, how about you?

I'm putting together my next order for my comic shop. My complete order for DC (including Wildstorm and Vertigo) is JSA, Warlord, Wildcats, R.E.B.E.L.S. That's it.
There are others in the household that buy most of the Superman titles, some of the Batman titles and lots of Green Lantern comics. Also coming in the door has been Billy Batson, JLA:Cry for Justice and other odds and ends. As a household we buy a good share and I'd buy a few more things if someone else wasn't but not much.
Let me survey the scene and tell you what I see. Many won't agree but that's okay. All of what follows is just my view at the moment for your consideration.
I'm buying no aftermath to Final Crisis. I bought the main miniseries and thought it was a mess. We lost the New Gods as a consequence and except for Batman (and the Flash more on that momentarily) everybody treats it like it didn't happen. No consequences, nothing spinning out of it except a bunch of low level characters in mini series I don't care about.
I'm not buying the Flash relaunch. I liked Barry. I loved what they did with Wally until the kids were born. I'm unconvinced that it wasn't overall a bad idea to bring Barry back even though I like him. The relaunch seems like a long way to go to get to the new status quo. Maybe when we get there I'll start buying again but it looks like Wally's getting pushed aside and that bugs the crap out of me. Wally used to be just another side kick then they did things with him that led me to really enjoy him and it's annoying to see him fade into the background.
I did buy the Spectre and Question part of the Final Crisis and thought it was the best thing that was done as part of that event. I didn't get a new Spectre comic out of it. Oh well, another character on the sidelines. I'll finish out Legion of Three Worlds but at that point I'm done with the Legion for a while. DC was willing to trash a good Legion title to stick them in the back of Adventure just to make Johns happy. Call it a protest act to not buy the new series regardless of if the new Superboy front feature is any good.
JLA has been disassembled again (like the Detroit years). I have respect for Robinson's talent and thought the first issue of Cry for Justice showed promise so maybe he can bring me back to this one but right now it is just meandering around. JSA has lost its edge as well but with Willingham coming on board we should get some interesting new directions so I'm sticking it out on that.
Tim Drake has become a character I don't recognize. I don't like Damian for many of the same reasons I didn't like Jason Todd. I love Nightwing. Early indications is that he is being set up to fail as Batman so I'm probably not going to enjoy that too much. The Nightwing comic is gone and so are the Birds of Prey. Most of what has been launched is boring or is going to drag along like the Flash in setting up anything that might be interesting. A flying Batmobile was a fun idea at least.
I like the characters in Warlord so I'm buying but there is a sameness to it so far so I'm not sure that I'm in it for the long haul.
Wildstorm seems to be in endless reboot mode so it is hard to work up any enthusiasm there. I'm buying an issue of Wildcats on a slim hope because Tao and Max were both interesting previously.
I was buying House of Mystery. There have been some good issues but they are too few and far between for me to buy it monthly and it is going to be hard to follow on a now and then basis. I was never big on Vertigo and there is a bland color pallet and a vague air of pessimism to nearly everything I see that puts me off from buying even titles like Fables that from what I can tell are creatively done.
I couldn't get past more than a few issues of Titans and Teen Titans just seems really dull to me. In the case of Teen Titans, the revolving door on the cast has been a problem but one I could forgive if the new additions were as interesting as the ones that left but except for Ravager they seem to be very one-dimensional. I want to like the new Blue Beetle but the stories just don't ever seem to intrigue me. Better villains would help, I think.
I like the Green Lantern Corps for the most part but this Sinestro Corps to the Blackest Night storyline has been endless. It moves at a snail's pace with a consistently dark murky art style that saps the life out of what should have been some great action sequences. I liked the new Ion but he appears to be gone for the next thousand years or so. I don't know how the GL's can continue to serve the Guardians and have any self-respect. The latest issue was creepy beyond all understanding. Kudos for being able to be do creepy so well but I don't think it's what I want out of this mag. The Hal loses his hand sequence was such a cheat. None of it really seems to matter. It just drags on from one thing to another. I've got Event Fatigue big time with this one.
Flamebird and Nightwing are a snore. I love Mon-el and that's been okay but really it is just kind of bumping along, too. World of Krypton is clearly the best of the lot and I can't complain about it except the stay of execution this month seemed contrived. The quality on Superman/Batman bounces around like a yo-yo. Is this mag in continuity or not? They can't seem to make up their mind. The less said about Supergirl the better.
The Adam Strange mini did something I didn't think was possible which was to get me to like the lead character. They've squandered that from Rann-Thanagar War that overall I liked to Rann-Thanagar Holy War which was much more lackluster. I can't even muster enough interest to buy Strange Adventures. More Event Fatigue I suppose. At least I've got REBELS. The pace for it is fairly glacial as well but the humor is redeeming.
So as I look across the DC landscape there is very little I find exciting. There seem to be a lot of squandered opportunities and great characters on the sidelines. My comic collection is deep with long runs of formerly great DC titles so my assessment is more out of sadness and disappointment than anger (with a couple of exceptions).
I would enjoy a bit of dialogue from other readers. Am I too harsh? Am I too jaded? Trial of Shazam was delightful and then the follow up is .....nothing really. It seems like every time DC does something I do like then they drop the character or send him to the showers for months on end. I thought Wonder Woman was showing some initiative but trying to sort out that storyline makes my brain hurt. I've dropped it again. Anybody have a solution? Is it too many events? Is it Didio playing favorites? Is it letting too many writers that have no respect for the past or future of the characters come to play in the DC sandbox? A little bit of all the above? Is the solution to just keep buying less and less and hope they get the hint?

Buying less will show them crappy stories are not awarded.
Thats why i read only some Bat books,Jonah Hex
I rather read smaller companies quality comics like Image,DH,IDW than a crappy comic by DC or Marvel.
Everytime i dont like what im reading i just drop the comic and change for a new indy one that sound good to me.

I agree - except for the GL line, the rest is boring.
The IC, FC, Countdown, 52 - series really did just seem like a commercial enterprise that had little overall plot structure.
But it's a general problem in the sci-fi fantasy literary world. There used to be constrained an tight stories.
For example, the LOTR or the Lensmen/GP series had a point that was coming in a precise story.
Today - we get infinitely long stories that dribble out plot points very slowly to keep you buying. In fact, a well-known author told me that we once communicated about his series - it was in his contract. He wants to make a living.
Look at Anita Blake or S. M. Stirling - used to have some tight books. The Island in the Sea of Time Trilogy really worked. Now his series in the same universe is endless with rambling plots and incidnets. In fact, it's suggested that the conclusion of what caused the event may happen in another long series of books.
Same with DC lately - no well plotted tight series and conclusions. Maybe Blackest Night will - who knows.

I haven't bought a new DC comic for six months. This is mostly because of my anger at the cancellation of Shooter's Legion, but it's also because DC simply isn't publishing anything I truly want to read. I'm semi-interested in the Green Lantern titles, Booster Gold and some of the Johnny DC titles, but my desire to read these comics is not strong enough to make me violate my boycott.

Well I've been loving the DCU. Flash: Rebirth, Green Lantern, Green Lantern Corps, Blackest Night, Batman and Robin. Yep I certainly I prefer the DCU to marvel atleast right now.

Well I'm reading a lot of other stuff too that isn't from the big two and I am actually enjoying more than the large selection of either DC or Marvel. I enjoy reading my friends copies of Invincible and Hellboy and also the endless supply of web comics that I can get for free.

Agreed whole heartedly. I've cut my entire pull list in half this summer because I've list interest in... Well, pretty much everything the DCU had to offer.
I'm now reading Detective Comics because I wanted to see what Rucka would do with Batwoman, I'm reading Wonder Woman at the moment but I don't like the direction it's headed so it's on the verge of being dropped, and I've picked up Justice: Cry for Justice because I liked the first one.
That's about it for me, as far as serious books go.
I'm reading Powergirl and Gotham Sirens for pretty much the same reason: they're FUN, and that's what I really want right now.
I've gotten so sick of all these dire situations, over-blown storylines and the numerous kill offs and resurrections that seem to have become par for the course.
On the downside, I'm no longer reading about Superman, Batman and Wondy looks like she's going there way too so I soon will no longer be reading about any of my three all time favorite DC characters... On the plus side... Well... My wallets not quite so empty!
Actually that doesn't seem like much of a pro to me, but as Galactica said, "Buy what you like, don't buy what you don't like" and I don't like much of anything DC is offering anymore.

I am just the opposite. All the endless Dark Regin drek at Marvel has me picking up more DC lately. I love Green Lantern and its connected titles, and can't wait fro Darkest Night. I have been loving the Superman books latley, and have even started reading Batman and Batman and Robin since the new dirrection started.

This.
Dark Reign's ridiculously un-thought-out story have me reading way less Marvel than is even listed in my sig. I've stuck with 4 titles that aren't DR interfered.
I'm absolutely loving the DCU right now. GL, GL Corps, Secret Six, Batman, Blackest Night, Booster Gold, Manhunter back-up story, Wed. Comics....I don't know what's not to like. Geez, comic guys will never be satisfied. Which is why I have to take such long absences from this board, some of you guys are just real downers.

Well, it's not as if you've only got a choice between Marvel and DC. There are plenty of good indie comics out there, and of course years' worth of stuff collected in trade paperbacks.

I'm absolutely loving just about everything about the DCU lately. I'm not sure I've been this into comics since around 1986 (granted, I did just come back to them this past December after almost 20 years away). And from everything I've seen about the 1990s in the DCU, I'm kinda glad I missed it.

My pull list has shrank recently also due to bad writers taking over good titles, disinterest in the "new directions" that seem a lot like the old agendas and revamps I can't really sink my teeth into (Batman and Robin, Cry For Justice). WoNK is interesting but the Superman books lacking Superman seems inherently counterproductive to me so I have no interest in them.
I have basically came to the decision if I actually enjoy a comic book, I'll pay for it. If I have a passing interest, the wonders of technology allow me to read them pro bono to decide if I actually want to get a real copy from my LCS. I don't want to support books and drive up their sales if I actually find the content disappointing. It saves time also when people say "if you don't like it, why are you buying it?" as if me purchasing a comic is somehow indicative of a kind of tacit approval of it's content rather than buying it out of interest.

Reading many DCU books these days.
They are firing on all cylinders.
Batman and robin is awesome. GL and GLC. REBELS. Wednesday comics. all the back up tales.

Perhaps you should try buying a book (not just a comic book) that's outside your normal reading parameters and focus on that, while giving DC a pass for a while.
(This isn't meant to insult your reading habits, since I don't know them. But if you're tired of a particular genre, a change of habit might be good for you. Remember, it's a big world out there, with a range of literature that makes the multiverse seem tiny.)

I feel exactly the same as you do. I can't stand all the Dark Reign stuff. The only comic at Marvel I really liked was Ultimate Spider-Man but Ultimatum ruined that for me.

Just felt I'd chime in and also say I dislike the Dark Reign stuff over at Marvel too. I stopped reading Marvel entirely back when Steve Roger was killed off, I thought that disappointed me but the way they're bringing him back is even MORE disappointing!
Over all I think I may just be suffering a 'modern hero burn out' phase, I find myself going back and re-reading old TPBs more and more lately, especially collected stories from the 80s.
I'm saddened to realize that the highlight of my pull list each month is actually Witch Blade rather than one of my usual super hero favorites. In 'Blade there's dark things going down, and they may even kill of one or both of the main protagonists from the looks of the current storyline... And yet I don't find myself losing interest, I love both characters, but I love the STORY surrounding them even more than the characters themselves.
That's a rarity for me, usually the characters involved in a story are what make me decide whether I'll be reading it or not, the fact that the team on Witchblade has hooked me so well as to keep me reading even as I worry for the well being of the heroes makes me realize just what it is I feel is lacking in the main stream comics like Batman, Superman, etc...
Everything has become so been there done that that it holds no real value to me anymore. I've given up on wanting something fresh from DC or Marvel, instead I'd just settle for an old favorite story I know is good, updated with new art.

I've been doing some of that. I'm buying Hercules from Radical, Rex Mundi, a little bit of Invincible and a few other odds and ends. I've been a reader of "real" books all my life(Stephen King, James Patterson, James Lee Burke, Frank Herbert, Arthur C Clarke, Edgar Allen Poe, JRR Tolkien, JK Rowling, Orson Scott Card and on and on and that hasn't changed (although there is some dissatisfaction there as well with some authors I'm worn out on and trying to find new voices that are as much fun to read).
The thing is that I have a long history with many of DC's characters (Legion, Spectre, Nightwing, and so on) so I'm having a hard time just giving up on them.

I want to like Power Girl but there is a disconnect in it for me. The story has this sort of nasty edge to it with people being made into scrambled eggs and our heroine about to have your head cut open but the art is this light cartoony style. There is some fun there but there is a grimness that doesn't mesh well for me.
At some point I'll probably give Batwoman a chance, probably after I've had a chance to see her in Cry for Justice and see if I what I think of the character. DC has done a poor job of introducing her up to this point, I think. That has been another chronic problem with DC in recent years - introducing a new character in a vacuum.

Sticking with B&B and BM&SM...I feel like I got mind raped by Trinity...

I was commenting a while back that this year might be the first time that I pulled more DC titles then Marvel...now I am not sure...

I'm totally loving DC these days. I love the GL titles and can't wait for Blackest Night. I think the slow buildup has been really exciting! I actually really liked McDuffie's JLA and really appreciated the way he had a lot of heroes of colour on the team without making an issue of it. REBELS continues to impress as does Secret Six. I am loving the old school Warlord since back in the early 80's it was the first comic I ever collected and Grell has brought back those old feelings for me. I am totally digging Power Girl and Run because they are both action packed and hilarious.
I really like what is happening in the Superman titles right now. I think it's great to see the spotlight fall on his supporting heroes for awhile. Teen Titans and Flash are moving along nicely, as is Dance, and I am eagerly awaiting Willingham on JSA. So far, both Wonder Woman and Outsiders are keeping me interested with their current storylines.
Over at Vertigo, I am all about Fables and Jack of Fables, and I am digging the magic stuff in Madame Xanadu.
I'm a little iffy about Titans right now, but once the team settles down into its new groove after being shaken up by Battle For The Cowl and the recent crossover with Vigilante I'm hoping it will improve. I will admit I'm not impressed with either Ink or Escape, and will probably drop them but they are the only two.
Overall, DC is a lot more fun right now than Marvel's Dark Reign which is basically telling the same story over and over in each Marvel title.

Glad you are enjoying DC so much but you are about the third person that's taken an opportunity to say that you like it better than Dark Reign. That seems really irrelevant to me. DC is doing things you enjoy or they're not and that should be true rather you think Dark Reign is crap or brilliant.
You are also one of several that are excited about Blackest Night. It's been a marketing success for DC but they've drained any enthusiasm I had for it a little at a time. The Alpha Lanterns don't seem to represent a legitimate viewpoint. They are just unlikeable kneejerk executioners. The Guardians are also getting harder and harder to respect and by extension it is getting hard to maintain respect for GL's that continue to work for them. We have not one but two sets of characters that are vomiting on other characters to change them. Possibly the most interesting new GL in a while just did the noble sacrifice thing so he's gone for now. The revelation that one of the main characters of the Corps is Sinestro's daughter seemed soap opera-ish and contrived. And now we are going to get a whole string of dead DC characters turned into zombies. When did GL and GLC get to be horror mags? And we've been building toward this thing for over a year and it's going to take an extra eight part series to tell it plus three more associated miniseries to pad the thing out even more. I'll wait till they actually come out to evaluate them but this seems like it will be the very thing you don't like about Dark Reign - telling essentially the same story in four miniseries.
So what is it exactly that you are liking about it? Everyone is entitled to like what they like but I'm inclined to believe that some people have just bought into the hype.
Other than that we've got some common ground. I think I would have liked McDuffie's JLA partially for that reason if they hadn't kept whittling the cast down to next to nothing. I'm okay with World of Krypton and Warlord. I can't agree that Flash and TT are moving along nicely or that WW is holding my interest (I gave it several issues to prove itself and it just kept getting more and more confusing).
So like I said if you are enjoying it all, I'm glad for you but a lot of it just isn't working for me and I don't think I'm alone in this. I await your more detailed view of the current state of the GL titles.

The thing is that I have a long history with many of DC's characters (Legion, Spectre, Nightwing, and so on) so I'm having a hard time just giving up on them.
I know you said you're not a big fan of Vertigo, but as a fan of the Spectre, you might want to give Madame Xanadu a look. It's been a great look into the magical side of the DCU over the centuries since the fall of Camelot, and it's the rare current series that uses (and adds to) continuity in a way that enhances rather burdens the story. The birth of the Spectre is a major plot point in issues nine and ten. Wesley Dodds, the Golden Age Sandman, and his paramour Dian Belmont are guest stars in the current arc, which features art by the legendary Michael Wm. Kaluta.

Buying less will show them crappy stories are not awarded.Well said.
I've really shrunk down my list of DC titles and only support what I think are the best titles that they have to offer. So far my pull list is composed of:
Superman: World of New Krypton
Superman: Secret Origins
Batman and Robin
Detective Comics
Batman Streets of Gotham (hopefully this will improve)
Green Lantern
Green Lantern Corps
Flash Rebirth (my opinion of the Flash books will heavily depend on its outcome)
Adventure Comics
Not much else outside of those, I sometimes pick up Superman/Batman depending on the creative team and I'll pick up something like Reign in Hell if it interests me. DC's doing a decent job so far and are doing a pretty good job of saving me money but I'd like for them to infuse more quality across the board.

I really like Dc Universe, these days. Especially, Vertigo side is growing too fast with Greek Street, the Unwritten and Madame Xanadu. Also, in Dc Universe, there're some good plans on the way. Secret Six, Bat-Series, Sup-Series, Wednesday Comics project, Blackest Night etc.
But i m saying it again: Vertigo is in its second Golden Age. New series, some old writers (I mean, Peter Milligan), new OG's and sure, Greek Street.

Both marvel and dc have been disappointing me lately.
Outside of Green Lantern, and some of the much improved Superman books, DC's main books have been relatively MEH. JSA and Titans haven't been as good as they were pre-INFINITE CRISIS. Same goes for The Flash. The Justice League has been so-so. Some nice ideas but not as good as it ought to be.
BUT... if you look past the big name books, there are quite a number of great reads under the radar.
Booster Gold, Secret Six and REBELS are great!
Brave and the Bold is inconsistent but when it hits the mark, it's a home-run.
However, DC's better titles have a bad track record. Manhunter and Blue Beetle come to mind as recent unappreciated books.
Over at Marvel, X-Factor and Thunderbolts (pre dark reign) are awesome. But I haven't caught up on them in recent months.
On a personal taste angle, Flash Rebirth and Legion of Three Worlds are fun for me.

I tend to think that DC is doing quite well in terms of producing good, or at least entertaining (not always the same thing), stories, and is showing a fair amount of innovation with their backup features and things such as 'Wednesday Comics.' I'm not bored in the slightest, but then my little corner of the DCU (the Batbooks and GL titles mostly) is firing on all cylinders lately.
I'd like to start picking up more independent titles, but I have trouble finding the floppies at my LCS, and I tend to balk at the idea of picking up a trade I'm unsure about.
When it comes to a "DC Universe" I have always been more attached to what I would call the "Batman Universe". Outside of the batbooks I have only followed detached series, that don't interact much with the rest.
My problem now is that all of the DC series I used to love are now gone. No more Young Justice. No more (PAD) Supergirl and no more (Cass) Batgirl.
The only title I somewhat followed and that still tied somewhat to the rest of the DC Universe was Birds of Prey, and that one is also gone. To make things worse: The New Gods are also gone. I must admit: I didn't like them all that much, but now that they are gone I realize how important they were.
The rest of interest I still have is devided between two titles: Secret Six and Green Lantern.
Secret Six, because it is mostly uneffected by the editorial mess that made up the last years. And my interest in Green Lantern is declining. I think because the buildup to Blackest Night has gone on for too long. If an event is hyped to much too early, I always lose interest.
As for the batbooks: They are also in a really problematic state. The deconstruction and rebuilding of the line is a mixed success at best. While some stories are good AFAIK, my own preferences in the lineup has been hit especially hard: Like said earlier, Tim Drake is not recognizable anymore. Cassandra Caine, well, I don't need to say anything about her. Oracle's role is still ill-defined and I will not touch any Bat title with Damian in it.
So I guess DC will have to work hard to win me back the way they once did.
But at least I don't consider DC (at least the batbooks fraction) to be destroyed beyond repair.
Over at Marvel, Spider Man isn't salvagable anymore, the x-books are almost destroyed and the overexposure of Dark Reign threatens what is left.

I'm more excited by the DCU now that I ever have been. I used to stick to the Batman books only, but there are so many other good books coming out these days. To name a few:
Booster Gold
Secret Six
JSA vs Korbra
JLA Cry for Justice
Flash: Rebirth
all of the Green Lantern books

I'm digging B&R, GL/GLC, and New Krypton so far. Gonna check Flash and other Bat books. DC is going on a good start this year, but their choice of characters are still limited and this is an area to be improved on. I want to see books on Hawkman and Aquaman for instance.
I was a Marvel guy and perhaps still is because of their more varied superheroes, but I got tired with the incessant crossover events & infighting among Marvel heroes. It looks as if Marvel cannot make a stand alone story for each of their superheroes. Just check out Captain America: have 3-4 issues but now Steve Rogers return is looming. Hulk doesn't have a cohesive story, same with Wolverine. Thor is still stuck in warming up stage. Iron Man on a holding pattern following the Dark Reign drek. Daredevil too off key. Marvel is obviously too overreliant on team up, crossover books. Kick Hawkeye or Luke Cage of Avengers books, and they can't make meaningful stories out of them.

Kaluta.
That sounds like a winner. I considered it when it launched and again when they said Kaluta was doing some issues. Are there currently or going to be trade collections? If not, I guess it is off to the back issue bins and a hunt next round of conventions .

I have seen a couple of your post and how you prefer fun comics. Have you tried Nova,Hercules,Invincible? Those are the comics i read because they are fun and lighter than the dark stories thats all the rage these days.
The big issue there is that I'm, over all, not much of a Marvel fan. I gave Herc a shot and I liked it, quite a bit really, but as much as I like the character watching him interacting with others in the Marvel universe left me disinterested and I just couldn't justify buying the comic on a monthly basis. I may well end up picking up some TPBs of his if they're ever released (or have they been already? If so point me at 'em!), but on the hole I greatly prefer stories focused solely on one hero rather than that heroes interactions with the other super humans in his/her world. Actually, the cohesive nature of the MU and how much their stories interweave and crossover into each other is probably one of it's biggest detractors for me.
Nova has never interested me because I'm not much for space based heroes.
In the case of Invincible, yeah it's classic super hero stories; but they're not the kind I like... It's all too barbaric for me. What turned me off to the series was the 'Perfect Strangers' arc where Invincible fights Omni-Man, the carnage and destruction left by their battle was so gruesome that I dropped the book before the story even finished. I don't like reading stories where thousands die, I see enough of that in the daily news, when I read a Super Hero book I like something fun, uplifting, and yes even a little campy.
My favorite super heroic acts usually involve the hero beating the living tar out of his enemy before the villain has a chance to harm anyone seriously. The stories where Batman shows up before the Joker even gets a chance to put his smilex to use, the ones where Superman stops the bank robbers before a single bullets fired or where the JLA steam rolls Darkseid before he gets the chance to in slave the planet, those are the ones I like.
Unfortunately for me those sorts of stories are the same ones that make most readers yawn from boredum, so there's not much chance of me finding what I'm looking for in modern comics anymore.

Funny you should ask: the first trade is released this Wednesday (7/15) in the US. It's $12.99 and collects the first ten issues, which boils down to $1.29 an issue. That's an incredible value for any series, but especially for a series of this quality.

Fair enough about the Dark Reign not really being relevant to whether or not I like DC except for the fact that those who know me over in the X-Men section know that I have usually been more of a Marvel person with a few long running DC titles that I follow. However, Dark Reign, which started out interesting, has pushed me away towards more DC titles. I should have explained that before.
Yeah, I am looking forward to Blackest Night. I think the main difference between us is that the long buildup has stolen your enthusiasm, while it has only increased mine. I also think that the Alpha Lanterns and the Guardians questionable decisions WILL be addressed in the future and we only need to be patient to see it come to pass. I expect the Green Lanterns WILL revolt against the Guardians. We've already seen that hundreds quit when the Guardians enacted their law that no two officers can engage in a romantic relationship. I think the revolt is coming, and perhaps the Blackest Night will be the catalyst. By the way, who is the second vomiting character? I know the Red Lanterns vomit, but who else? I also LOVE the idea of multiple Lantern Corps based on the spectrum with different reasons/emotions driving them so this long process has been great for me as we meet the different Corps.
As for the Blackest Night being like Dark Reign, I disagree. The main miniseries will be the main story. The satellite series are focussing on specific groups in the DC Universe like Batman, Superman and the Titans. There really isn't much need to read these unless you like those particular characters. With Dark Reign, I currently get 22 Marvel titles a month with the DR banner on them, and in all the stories, pretty much the premise is, good guys don't like new status quo and say so. In comes in Norman Osborn and various villains, usually the Dark Avengers who fight with hero of title. Some d-List character dies and we see a pointless appearance by either The Hood or Deadpool. it's brutal! The FF tie is 4 issues of Reed Richards in a virtual reality machine seeing his teammates as pirates while Franklin and Valeria get all scared as every issue Norman and Venom walk closer and closer to the front door of the Baxter Building. Trust me, DR is different than what I expect BN will be.
With Flash, I kinda agree with you and I kinda don't. I NEVER liked Barry Allen and I LOVE Wally so I am a little concerned that Wally is getting pushed aside. However, if I think back a few years to Green Lantern Reborn, I remember how I NEVER liked Hal and LOVED Kyle and was so worried and ended up loving the mini series and getting a new appreciation of Hal. I am optimistic that Johns will do the same for Barry, and, like with Kyle, will find a way to keep Wally around.
Teen Titans, for me, is finally back on track. It was in dire straits really ever since One Year Later, and I was only collecting it out of habit until recently. I really dig the new line up. I have always been a Wonder Girl fan ever since she was introduced on Byrne's WW and I loved Blue Beetle's solo series. I always liked Aquagirl when she was in Aquaman's series and I have mad love for Static so I'm pretty happy with everything right now.
As for Wonder Woman, I'll just chalk that up to personal taste as I don't find it confusing and am looking forard to seeing where this is all going.
If you have any questions about the other titles I collect, I'll be more than happy to defend them! Seriously though, I love these kinds of conversations where everyone is mature and respects each others' opinions.

If you haven't already, you should give Dynamo 5 from Image a try. Traditional super hero stuff without beheadings and brutalizing but with a modern feel. Strong female characters among the main characters and at times funny without getting silly. For the most part very self-contained although the writer will occasionally slip in characters from Noble Causes or something else he writes.

Spoiler Warning!!!!!
In the current GL#43, the rogue Guardian vomits up a black lantern ring that flies to Black Hand's dead body and reanimates him.
I wasn't much of a Kyle fan from the beginning but I know people that regard him as their GL. With Hal back, Kyle has been shoved out of the main title and is barely playing second fiddle to Guy most of the time in GLC. He has to be squeezed in between the newer characters they want to showcase and the older Corps members like Guy and Kilowog. There is little time for his signature creative uses of the ring and lighter more humorous attitude. If Wally has to suffer a similar fate to bring Barry back I'm going to be even more disappointed in DC than I am now.
I'm pleased to hear that Teen Titans is getting back on track. It had dropped off my radar almost completely. I'd be willing to give it a fresh look because of the diversity of characters if DC will solicit with enough details to tell me what kind of story I'd be getting.
For the questionable decisions to be addressed they're going to have to burn the current GL structure to the ground and rebuild it. That would be bold and interesting but does anybody want that? Yeah, I'm just begging for them to get on with it at this point and the eight part mini hasn't even started yet. Different strokes for different folks as they used to say.
I've been avoiding getting into Dark Reign because I'm afraid that it will sidetrack the thread. If you've got a spot on the Marvel board where you've aired your views, I'll go there and tell you where I differ with you. The short version is that I expected to hate it but have been drawn in to parts of it and that I find it very easy to deal with that way. I skipped the FF tie in completely. I can pick and choose which parts of it I follow and some of them are very different in the side of the situation that they show. DK is intricate to Avengers Initiative in one way and has touched the Mighty Avengers in an entirely different way they don't even suspect. I can't wait to see who finally gets to drop the hammer on Norman and the line of people ready to pound his face or stab him in the back is getting longer.
I can see your point of view though about both DK and Blackest Night so thanks for engaging in the dialogue.

There have been two trades so far so you could begin at the beginning which is really best. The current Previews solicit is for issue 25 and I think that is the third and maybe final part in an arc with a character called Father Gideon. If you don't go back to the beginning I would probably wait for that end to start picking it up.

Sadly, this is true. As pissed as I am about Marvel's current direction, I'm not about to start any threads on the topic - I'll just continue cutting down my pull list every couple of months to the point where I'll only be reading ASM, New Avengers and maybe FF come September.
DC on the other hand... sure, they went through a quiet patch 4 or 5 months ago where some books went on hiatus or were cancelled but right now there's gorgeous new stuff exploding every month. Flash:Rebirth, WoNK, JSA vs Kobra, Justice League, Power Girl, Superman:Secret Origin, Batman & Robin, Detective Comics... oh, and some book called Blackest Night that a couple of you guys might pick up.
Seriously, right now I'm as excited as I have been about DC for at least the last few years.

IMO, World of New Krypton has actually made Superman and the Superman family more interesting. GL and the whole BN has been building up for five years but has lost a bit of momentum in the last 3 months, altho GLC almost made up for a boring GL story or two. I am also loving Batman: Reborn, which is a surprise as I thought the BftC itself was terrible.
Aside from the big events, you have a new JSA team, a new JLA team and the Secret Six to keep you occupied. Throw in L3W and the forthcoming Adventure Comics and I'm hooked on DC all over again.
I find myself reading Marvel, I go through phases of reading lots of X-Men and lots of Avengers stuff. Problem is, it doesn't hold my attention as the stories aren't really that interesting. This is compounded by the whole Dark Reign nonsense, which could've just been renamed "This is what we are calling Marvel Comic books in 2009, although the name is meaningless, much like 'the initiative' in 2007/2008 was"

Not bored by DC so much as disappointed.
Too many disappointing titles come and go and crash & burn.
I've liked all the Robinson stuff, but most of the other stuff sounds good in interviews but then turns out to be crappy (Giffen is a master of this, which makes me hesitant to give Magog a shot in light of his lame work on Reign In Hell, Suicide Squad, et al).
Wednesday Comics had great promise, but DC blew it by overpricing it.
All of that said, there's still a lot of DC I like, but most of it is stuff by the same writers that I know I can reasonably trust; most of the new stuff like Power Girl have just left me cold.

Can't say I'm bored at all. Blackest night is really shaping up to be one hell of a story. Detective and Batman & Robin have hooked me very quickly. Secret Six and Booster Gold still power along quite nicely. Grell is back on Warlord. tomasi is doing a good job on Outsiders. Wednesday Comics is looking good. I'm interested in the new creative team of JSA, my favourite team book.
Over at Vertigo Fables and Madame Xanadu are impressing the hell out of me. Wildstorm has Astro City, probably my favourite comic these days.
I'm interested in the Superman stuff and will be picking it up in trade. I'll do the same with REBELS, since I missed the first few issues.
Really, I think only the Titans books are lacking right now.
