Hal hasn't been written that way in forever (certainly not the obnoxious reynolds brand), not in any of the books I've ever read.
I've hated Reynolds since Blade 3, nothing he's done since makes me think he'll be any different in this.

Well I guess we have been reading different Green Lantern comics. Whats your take on Hall Jordan's personality.
Go rent The Nines. It's a fantastic movie and Reynolds is brilliant in it.
BTW whats wrong whith Reynolds in Blade 3. He was a highlight for me.

That's because Ryan R usually plays the exact same character in every movie. Kinda like Will Ferrell, Tom Cruise, Jack Black or that dorky kid from Arrested Development.

Uh, yes he has. He was that way in his Silver Age comics, and all the reboots of his origin like Emerald Dawn and the more recent Secret Origins.

Actually NONE of the DC comics characters had any personality imo until the early 70's (and even that was really just Green Arrow), and most of the Silver Age characters didn't receive defining traits until the last 10-15 years.
The GL of the Silver Age I read was kinda stuffy and liked old school jazz. That's kinda it. The whole brash pilot thing imo was a more recent development.

You don't think the Hal Jordan who got thrown out of the Air Force for crashing a billion dollar plane and hitting a superior officer is cocky. The one who gets into bar fights with a smile on face.
Hal Jordan when he first gets the ring is like Tom Cruise in Top Gun.
I just hope the writers, directors, sfx, and everyone else do a good job.

Characters weren't exactly well written back then, but I have read older silver age books where he did come across as a coky A-hole. When he meets Alan Scott, he acts like a d-bag.

But you could say the same thing about Superman, Batman, The Atom, etc etc... DC kinda had a 'same character mentality' policy. It wasn't really characterization. Just forwarding a plot.

Uhm, you do realize that was all added after the Silver Age ended, right?
Well, IN the Silver Age, he was manhandling Carol Ferris from the first issue and she was his boss, which is a fair bit removed from most DCU heroes -- who only made physical contact with the opposite sex when catching them as they fell off buildings. Hal's first appearance seems almost like a textbook story about sexual harassment.
And while you CAN say that values were different back then, Hal's attitude was clearly different from the attitude of, well, any other male in the JLA.
Barry courted women with flowers. Ray ignored them. Superman and Batman made vows against romance, which they would bend in the occasional creepy way. Ollie was big on Rennfest-reject poetic wordplay. But Hal was the guy who would grab women and kiss them after they said no or physically corner them.
I'd say that even in the less character-intensive stories of the era, he was supposed to be headstrong and cocky and a irreverent in a Rhett Butler kinda way.
Michael P
07-11-2009, 06:49 PM
Yeah, the myth of Hal as a straight-laced, Dudley Do-Right type is largely an artifact of the Bronze Age. More specifically, the "Hard-Travelin' Heroes" period, where they re-molded him into a foil for Green Arrow.
PatrickG
07-11-2009, 06:50 PM
And, yes, I think he was a big creep.
But the point is, I always saw Hal as a guy who pretty much acted out his impulses. He gets angry, he throws a punch. He's horny, he kisses a woman. He's sad, he falls to his knees in despair.
That only lessened after Ollie sent him on a guilt trip and, really, I think Ollie's responsible for Hal becoming Parallax. Before the retcon, it was clear IMHO that he snapped over Coast City because Ollie reprogrammed Hal's idea of what he should be and do and whether radical progress was in his job description. And even post-retcon, I think Parallax was only able to take over Hal because of the doubts Ollie planted in him.

My reaction was this.... from what I remembor on the TV/Film board. It was a wait and see deal. I had confidence in Ledger since he did Brokeback Mountain and had done some very decent films beyond a Knights Tale. He seemed to wanna challenge himself a lot. So I knew he could possibly do it justice then.

I don't see how so. He's done a lot of comedy, but he's also been in darker and more dramatic fare like Smokin' Aces Fireflies in the Gardens, and the Nines.
And to be perfectly honest, I know fans always get upset over tone and such, but I don't put much stock in what we think, and neither should the studio. If you look at all the fans who think that Batman should fight Mr. Freeze or Killer Croc should be the villains in the next NOLAN Bat-film, I honestly don't think we know how to make a successful movie.

I don't see how a Nolan Mr. Freeze or Croc is that impossible if he can do Ra's and Scarecrow. It would be different however.
Croc wouldn't look like a Croc, literally. He'd just be a guy with scabby skin. Not scales. Scabs and burns.
Freeze would be a lot different than traditional post-TAS takes on Freeze. He'd probably be a guy with a wife in a coma who has pathological bodyheat issues.

No, what they were suggesting were comic-close counterparts, with the logic that "Nolan's universe is too conservative and boring. The sci-fi/fantasy elements would start it down the RIGHT path."
This is why I get weary of fanboys who think they know how to make the perfect movie. Like I had a guy on the DCMB tell me why an R-rated GI Joe set in the 80's would be a smash hit. When I pointed out to him why that wouldn't work, he cursed me out and said I didn't know what I was talking about.

He also decided that Kyle should become Hal Jordan-lite and completely lost Kyle's character. He was the young Peter Parker type rookie who of course made a mistake here or there...but always managed to pull it out in the end.
Winick and Raab completely killed the character and its no shock Hal was brought back.

I think an easy explantion would be to have Freeze be someone searching for a cure to his wife's coma. The man known as Killer Croc would be his lab assistant or someone who worked beside Freeze. The lab blows up due to some mobster who wanted Freeze cryogentics he was working on. Freeze is one part of the lab...the assistant the other.
Freeze becomes who he is due to being close to the cryogentics. Croc becomes who he is due to a rare form of mutant genome that Freeze was wanting to work on to cure his wife.
To give it a twist , both were working at Waynetech here.

I can see*his point, every kid I knew saw Robocop, Running Man, Commando, Rambo and Predator. A similar toned G.I. Joe film in the 80s would have done well when compared to the other hit films of the day. Though clearly the JOEs were kids toys, and marketed as such for the most part. So Hasbro would never had let it happen, but the potential for it to be a hit, similar to Predator with an ensemble cast of an elite military strike force would have done gangbusters in theaters, fun for dads and their sons.
In fact I'm starting to wish it did happen.
but back on topic.
Reynolds as Hal? Well I guess it's better than Jack Black(who was being seriously considered, or at least the rumors say so) But I don't think it's the GL movie I'd want to see. I don't see Hal as a wise cracking smart ass. Not saying Ryan can't paly the straight man, but that would be wasting his talents. Although, Keaton who was known for his Comedy surprisingly portrayed a believable and serious Batman.
I would rather have seen RR as Wally West, but I'm glad to know GL is getting off the ground.

Jack Black's GL was a comedy with an entirely new character as Green Lantern. It was gonna be a stupied comedy where a guy ate a coyote to show he had no fear. Warners was planning this as they were getting ready to release Catwoman.
The general thought was at the time Halle Berry would make Catwoman a huge hit. They were discussing sequels before the movie even hit ! So Warners thought , hey if we can create a new character and spin on Catwoman , and it does huge...what the hell...we can give Jack Black "Green Lantern" and it will do huge numbers on his name alone.
But once Catwoman laid such an epic bomb that opening week , the company got scared shitless. Realizing that you can stray too far from the core concept and ruin things. The Jack Black GL film died within days of Catwoman's dismal box office take.

.
At the height of Joe's popularity, that would've been HUGE! But the thing is, patriotism is at an all-time low, and war movies in recent years have bombed at the box office. No one wants to see a "Go USA" war film anymore, which is why they've changed GI Joe into some sort of Global peace keeping force for the movie.

I can think of a lot worse choices that Reynolds. Given a decent script, I'm sure he'll do fine. I'm more worried about how they'll handle the FX. I'm having a hard time imagining how they can do the ring constructs in a live-action movie without it looking really cheesy. If the audience doesn't "buy" the ring, there goes your whole movie.

I agree. Doesn't matter who they cast - especially since, let's be honest, the mainstream crowd doesn't know anything about Hal Jordan - but the setting and effects could kill this dead.
I do think Reynolds is a star in the making though. This could be it.

I'm talking about that second batman.
One, it was the joker again.
Two, I don't like joker in the first place but this was a joker with zero appeal.
Three, they pulled a 'spiderman 3' doing two villains in one movie that each deserved their own (ot that I would have watched the joker one).
The choices in the creative team and casting have been wtf? at best, I don't hold out any hopes that this will be a good movie.

Two, I don't like joker in the first place but this was a joker with zero appeal.
I think the box office and reveiwers would disagree with you there, buddy.

Kangaroo Jack was a great idea according to the box office.

If a crap load of people went to see it, and critics pretty much unanimously agreed that the Joker was great, then he certainly has appeal. There were plenty of flaws in the film, but it's ridiculous to say the Joker had ZERO appeal, especially since he was the core of the film's marketing.

You can't argue opinion. I'm comfortable differing with the general populace on this one.

I am just hoping they throw a buckets of money at the production and allow them independence to do what's best.....filming it in Sydney is a nice start....hopefully like LOTR the Suits will be too far away to interfere.

Hopefully. Batman Begins and The Dark Knight ended up garnering a good deal of acclaim and cash, and the studio had little overall interference.

I'm talking about that second batman.
One, it was the joker again.

The fact that Ledger stole the damn show and actually made The Joker seem to come alive from the comics was awesome. He captured that insanity. It was beautiful.

Do I think he should have won the Oscar like he did ? No idea....was the performance that damn good. Hell yeah. In my LCS everyone discussed that Ledger stole the movie from Bale.

Is this a go? I've lost track of how many times Green Lantern and Wonder Woman film news have been made with nothing to show for it.

Its supposed to be a "Go" . They annouced the budget ($150 million) and that filming in Sydney would happen a month or 2 ago.

Although JLA was supposed to be a 'go' too. Still this looks more promising.

Did they actually annouce a budget and location for filming for JLA ? I know that the whole Superman/Batman film was discussed a few years back but it never came above a script being done and Wolfgang Peterson as the guy behind it.

This actually sounds like it's going through the normal steps any movies goes through. With WW half the time it's rumors the other wishful thinking that everyone gets involved in.

They had director, George Miller, and were set for filming in Oz. I believe there were disagreements about casting, but they had a rough list of names assigned.

Budget, location, script, and I think they had everyone cast but Superman and the villains. They were ready to start filming. then they decided the script wasn't good enough, and the writer's strike happened, and the project never rematerialized. As the plot was essentially Infinite Crisis minus the crisis (except with Barry instead of Wally as Flash), that's probably for the best.

For those who have don't think Ryan can do it you have not seen all his work. Check out Nin9s, Chaos Theory, Defiantly maybe, Fireflies in the Garden, and The Amityville Horror. He is a excellent actor who can play many roles, but is only well known for his comedy, much like Jim Carry and Robin Williams who both can poll off other roles, but tend to get fast casted by people who judge before they see.
Ryan will make a great Hal, and yes there will be humor, but Hal does bad jokes and a dry sense of humor, jokes that make you facepalm. I think Ryan would have been better as Flash but then that would mean my Favorite actor is playing my 2 favorite superheroes.
I think my major concern with the movie will be to much cg like catwomen or a bad script. Don't judge it till you see it is all I am saying. Ryan is capable enough to pull it off. I mean he is fixing what they did to barackapool, in the upcoming movie. He is a comic fan after all.

What killed the JLA movie was Zero support for the Studio, Budget problems, location problems and Casting problems..
GReen Lantern has total support friom the studio, a budget, location and now started casting..

The Director Martin Campbell (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0132709/) has a solid action Background with two 007 flicks under his belt and the recent Zorro revivals as well, but no sci fi/space effects driven films.
Not to say he couldn't adapt, just curious what his approach would be.

How about we list the reactions from creators.. (via Twitter)
Mark Waid: (1) I don't understand the fantrums about Ryan Reynolds as GL, and (2) and more importantly, I don't want anyone to try to explain them.
Geoff Johns: Ryan Reynolds is Green Lantern!!!! SWEET
Andy Diggle: I always thought Ryan Reynolds would make a great Green Arrow. But yeah, Green Lantern works too.
Francis Manapul: Awesome news on GL!!! I actually thought Cooper could bring some edge to it, but Ryan has I wider appeal. I dig.
Pete Woods: I'm still pissed that they didn't pick me. I'd be perfect
Sterling Gates was more excited about the fact that the movie is on it way
James Robinson never commented on Ryan but said Timberlake was an aweful idea.. then pitch a movie with him as Alan, Geoff as Hal and Sterling as Guy..
Most of the people I looked at havwent commented on it at all.... GAIL!
