apparently you can make this stuff up.

I kiss Nick all the time in public.

and lots of gay people kiss each other all the time at the many gay bars in Texas every night of the week.

just because some homophobic bigot kicked gays out of a restaurant (and good, the ACLU is involved) doesn't mean it's illegal to kiss.

and although I said "good" that the ACLU is involved? I hope they stay out of this minor issue, and instead focus on the targeting of Gay Bars for raids by the TABC (Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commision) that happened a few weeks back in Fort Worth (on Pride Weekend). THAT is the bigger issue.

so you folks schedule a massive protest/make-out session yet? you could call it "the million man make-out"

Police officers representing it as illegal is close enough, don't you think?

We don’t have no lovin’s in El Paso
We don’t go to porno picture shows
We don’t swap our wives with our neighbors
And we keep our kids away from Mexico.
And I’m proud to be an asshole from El Paso
A place where sweet young virgins are deflowered.
You walk down the street knee-deep in tacos
Ta-ta-ta-tacos
And the wetbacks still get twenty cents an hour.
We don’t wipe our asses on Old Glory,
God and Lone Star beer are things we trust.
We keep our women virgins till they’re married
So hosin’ sheep is good enough for us.
And I’m proud to be an asshole from El Paso
A place where sweet young virgins are deflowered.
You walk down the street knee-deep in tacos
Ta-ta-ta-tacos
And the wetbacks still get twenty cents an hour.
I’m proud to be an asshole from El Paso
A place where sweet young virgins are deflowered.
You walk down that street knee-deep in tacos
Ta-ta-ta-tacos
And the wetbacks still get twenty cents an hour

That's not even remotely what that article said.

It, in fact, says the exact opposite.

You don't even have to read all that closely to see the statement:

De Leon said the officer told the group it was illegal for two men or two women to kiss in public. The five men, he said, were told they could be cited for homosexual conduct -- a law the U.S. Supreme Court ruled unconstitutional in 2003 in Lawrence v. Texas.

So the article CLEARLY says that Officer Douchenozzle was wrong.

Police officers representing it as illegal is close enough, don't you think?

The thread title makes it sound like it's illegal throughout the state rather than the belief of a redneck officer.

Well, so the title is a summary of what the police officer said and not a summary of the article in toto.

I don't think we need to crucify 4PointOh over this.

No. I don't. A poorly trained police officer does not make statutory law.

Clearly, lots of people would actually have expected a reveal that gay kissing is illegal in Texas from this title and now are feeling cheated.

Feeling persecuted?

Who is crucifying anyone?

The thread title is exactly the opposite of the gist of the story. Pointing this out is somehow crucifixion?

When did reading comprehension become optional?

What is there to debate?

I guess next time we shouldn't let someone know if a thread title is kinda misleading because everyone gets butthurt about it.

yeah.. I was a little surprised no one followed up on my post.

but oh well. . as I noted, ACLU is involved, and we've had a couple of weeks of protests, and there's an open investigation now

(one of the patrons arrested ended up in the hospital with head injuries! and despite TABC claims that they were "groped" by patrons. . . not one witness from inside the bar has cooberated that claim).

The debate isn't over a title, it was over the implication that "You can't make this stuff up". The implication of that obviously being that some great legal injustice was going down (and I believe another implication being something along the lines of "snicker, snicker, what a bunch of backward hicks those Texans are that they'd allow a law like that").

So yeah. Obviously the opening post needed to be challenged. It's not a crime to misread an article, of course, I hope that's understood, but its not petty to debate the conclusions which seemed to stem from that misreading.

Now that this has all been cleared up? Yeah. Lets move on.

Actually, I was just riffing off of the Huffington Post's article title (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/07/09/gay-men-kicked-out-of-res_n_229188.html). But again, I was only trying to be funny. I thought the title was so absurd that no one would take it seriously. My mistake.

I heard the mayor asked for a special federal prosecutor or something like that? I thought that was pretty decent of him.

Agreed whether the title is true or not isn't the point. The point is the sheer fact a police officer said some messed up stuff that wasn't true and all this happened and that is indeed fucked up or just fucked.

Why? Is it really all that surprising that there are some dumb ass people in local law enforcement? What's the huge shock? It's a small tragedy, not a big one.

Honestly, the reaction should be "big fucking deal". It's one instance of one ignorant a-hole in one community (unless the reaction is to the original city ordinance, both imposed AND overturned years before...)

Someone really needs to explain to officer Douche here that if you want to put on the ill fitting blue cop outfit and sit in a donut shop all day, you need to have at least a passing knowledge of the laws you're pretending to uphold, inbetween snack breaks and lugging your fat ass to the rest room:biggrin:

Otherwise you're going to need to get an education and try and find a REAL job:wink:

Wow! You wouldn't have that same attitude if you were in real trouble.
I somehow doubt you'd call a friggin' hairdresser to come to your aide
No doubt the cop in the article is an ass, but show me one occupation that is an asshole-free zone.

Such a brash attitude towards the people who are there to guard you while you sleep, and make you feel safe is proof that they've done their job.

Sorry everyone I'm just sick of the badge-bashing that always goes on here at YABS. If cops were half as bad as many of you say, you'd probably be too afraid to actually say it.

And the fact this idiot was trying to enforce a law that no longer exists is proof he's NOT doing his job.

I'm not saying all cops are idiots. I mean there must be some good ones (I've never met any, granted, but statistically there must be SOME) but this particular one very clearly rode the short bus to the police academy:biggrin:

I suppose that is an improvement, but I have to ask: Howmany cops DO you know?

It depends what you mean by "Know". If you mean how many clsoe personal friends are cops then the answer is none darling. But I've met a fair few, either at music festivals or just out on the town either when there's been a fight near or involving someone I'm with or just on the street.

And they've been, without fail, arrogant, narrow minded little bastards.

Again, not saying that ALL cops are like this. But the proffession does seem to attract a lot of assholes, most likely because it's a job that gives them the chance to swagger about and feel powerful

I've known a few decent cops. Then again, even the best of them occasionally got a kick of out venting authority or took the occasional favor. It's endemic to the job, unfortunately (like politics), that the best aren't typically drawn to it, and even the best of those who are are knocked down by the realities of it.

Known a few guys in that job who were outright psychopaths too. The range really is between hapless, stressed and put upon on one end, and loony on the other extreme.
